AN Australian mother has won custody of her son after fleeing the US when a whirlwind internet romance with a reformed prisoner turned ugly.
The broken love affair, which started in a chatroom, is detailed in a recent Family Court judgment that hands the mother sole custody of the three-year-old.
Justice Paul Cronin has taken the unusual step of banning the father and his "servants and agents" from removing the child from Australia.
According to the judgment, the couple belonged to a church in California for three years and underwent marriage counselling with the church pastor.
Justice Cronin said the mother went into hiding and fled with their eight-week-old son amid claims the father had deprived her of water during pregnancy.
"The wife alleged a history of extreme physical, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse in the relatively short period of time that the (couple) were together," Justice Cronin said.
"She gave evidence of physical assaults, deprivation of liberty, including depriving her of water during pregnancy, verbal denigration and sexual abuse.
"One of the allegations . . . made was that (he) cut up her clothing and shoes, threw out her jewellery and let the air out of the tyres of her motor car.
"She said he tore up her only Bible that was given to her as a 21st birthday present."
He said the Superior Court in California granted her a "permanent restraining order" against him, ending the three-year marriage.
Justice Cronin said the father went for joint custody with the backing of the church pastor, former neighbours and friends.
They depicted him as a "good person" and the mother as "hysterical".
But Justice Cronin said the father had to contend with a recommendation that he undergo long-term psychotherapy.
"(He) has a long history of drug-related criminal activity and has spent considerable portions of his life in prison," Justice Cronin said.
Under the court orders, the only contact between father and son will be through cards, videos and gifts.
Justice Cronin also granted an injunction against the father relating to "approaching, assaulting, molesting or harassing her or the child".
