Thirty police in brawl with family

IT BEGAN as a family argument - a shouting match so loud neighbours called the police.

But the Mehanna family's verbal altercation yesterday escalated into an all-in brawl with 30 police officers.

By the time it was over three police officers were in hospital and another four were injured.

One of the revellers had been pepper sprayed and tasered.

Police allege a probationary constable was punched in the face while standing in the driveway of the Bankstown townhouse complex in Ogmore Court, leaving him with a black eye.

Witnesses said officers responded, blasting a 22-year-old known as Adele in the face with pepper spray and using a Taser to subdue him on the ground.

Neighbour Ahmad Jaafar, who saw the incident, said: "The police didn't stop once he was on the ground.

"The guy's brothers ran in to help and the cops started bashing them."

A police spokesman said officers had to use force after up to six members of the family allegedly joined in the assault of the probationary constable.

Mr Jaafar said the argument was "just a normal family fight".

"There was a lot of yelling and screaming and running up and down the stairs and banging on doors," he said.

"When the police came, that's when all hell broke loose. He started swearing at the cops and yelling."

Police quickly called for backup but the altercation had become an all-in brawl by the time more than 30 officers from surrounding local area commands arrived minutes later, resulting in injuries to a further six officers, including bruising and concussion. One officer was also allegedly bitten on the hand.

Five members of the family - four men and a woman - were arrested.

Three of the officers, including the probationary constable who was originally attacked, required treatment at Bankstown Hospital but were discharged several hours later.
