  • It's the Australia Suite at the Intercontinental Sydney
  • Numerous celebrities have stayed in this room

OPRAH, Russell Brand, Jennifer Aniston, Mel Gibson, Pierce Brosnan, Frank Sinatra, Cher and Pink have all stayed in this hotel room. In fact, name the celebrity and it's likely they've stayed here before.

Welcome to the $5500-per-night Australia Suite at the Intercontinental Sydney hotel.

Thrilled at being given the chance to be treated like a celebrity and stay in this hotel room, I knew I was in good company when I found out the latest high-profile visitor was Bond, James Bond that is. Word is that Daniel Craig had delighted fellow guests when he popped down to the main gym for a workout.

Even former US president Bill Clinton and the Prince of Thailand have stayed here.

One celebrity, who can't be named, notably made a bizarre request - for the concierge to bring them a stuffed kangaroo - that is, to go and kill a live kangaroo and stuff it and bring it back. It's the one request they were unable to fulfill!

So why does this hotel room attract so many rich and powerful people?

It's not just the extravagance. This hotel, having taken over the old Treasury Building of 1851, has access to top-secret underground tunnels in case of conflict or war, making it easy to evacuate and thus very secure.

I knew I was in a good place in case of an emergency.

But I wondered if the suite could possibly live up to my high expectations – others had tried and failed.

Before I'd even seen the room I felt like a celebrity – I could feel the gaze of a group of fellow guests on me as I got out of the lift and walked towards the room. At the 29th floor, it's as high as you can stay in the hotel.

At nearly 250 square metres, the suite is several times the size of most hotel rooms and it's easy to misplace items - you don't usually have that problem in a standard shoe-box-sized hotel room, not to say I was complaining!

The sizable suite includes a lounge room, separate kitchen, office area, bedroom, two bathrooms, two closets (one is a massive walk-in closet) and an outdoor area.

It was strange to think of Oprah wandering around this room, relaxing on the huge couch and soaking up the views while she prepared to explore the city. And I couldn't help but wonder exactly what celebrities such as Russell Brand may have gotten up to in this room...

The first thing that struck me about the suite was the piano, which took pride of place a short distance from the entrance, adding a touch of elegance.

Then as I walked further into the suite I was met with a spectacular view of Sydney Harbour and it became easy to see why the room could go for up to $10,000 per night, especially at New Year's Eve.

There's no doubt it has one of the best views in Australia - as well as the sweeping views of the city and surrounds, including the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Botanical Garden can be seen from the bedroom.

Now this is living the high life!

This is the view from the main room:

Pink requested her workout equipment be moved to the outdoors area, and I could understand why.

The suite is often redecorated for celebrities to suit their preferences, but it's impressive in its standard form.

There are three televisions with surround sound, numerous tables and desks, a large couch, 29 different types of chairs or seating areas, a king bed, and countless pillows and cushions... and a giant sculpture of a pear! Yes, a pear.

Having a soak in the bathtub is a must - it also offers a view that has to be among the best in Australia. And if you get sick of gazing outside you could always turn on the television positioned right next to the bathtub - a nice touch! Flick a button and the electric curtains will give you privacy.

Or you could climb out of the bath and head to the bedroom where you can lounge around right next to the windows in comfort while you read a book.

If it's a nice day you could wander over to the outside area, complete with a table and lounge chairs and stunning views.

There's a separate shower where the water comes at you from five different directions – it took me a moment to realise you could opt for the standard one nozzle, or the five at once.

Of course, there's also the bidet, towel warmer and range of toiletries including bath salts. There are even scales to monitor your holiday weight.

And a must for any celeb: a huge walk-in closet with plenty of room for any shoes, dresses and other clothing items. A second, smaller closet near the entry features a laundry chute.

There's also a full kitchen including stylish plates, cutlery and glasses that you wouldn't expect to see in a standard hotel room.

For those who simply can't stop working, there's an office area.

Guests should also take a visit to the top of the hotel - level 31, where there's a rooftop bar with amazing views of the city.

There's also a very impressive high coffee experience. The chefs were able to cater for those with special dietary requirements, such as gluten-free, exceptionally. The offerings were very similar to the standard ones Рcourse after course of delicious coffee and treats ranging from waffles to scones, macaroons and coffee cr̬me brulee.

All in all, if you have the money to spend you won't be disappointed!
