Calls are mounting for a royal commission into the military's handling of abuse claims raised by cadets.

HUNDREDS of new and alarmingly sordid cases of alleged defence force abuse will today be presented to a Senate Committee.

The senators will be asked to privately examine 33 folders detailing more than 900 top-secret complaints, as part of an inquiry into the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce (DART).

Most cases have not been dealt with yet and they are contained in a classified file called "DLA Piper Volume Two".

It is understood that the files include the names of very senior military officers.

The material has not been seen by the Minister or anyone in Defence, but is so explosive DLA Piper lawyer Gary Rumble — who conducted the massive defence abuse inquiry — believes it warrants a Royal Commission.

The in-camera viewing is designed to provide transparency and to remove any mystery about the extent or the nature of complaints of abuse made to DLA Piper and the DART.

The files contain "detailed, highly sensitive, personal information and specific recommendations dealing with individual complaints of abuse', according to acting DART chairman Robert Cornall, who notified the Foreign Affairs and Trade References Committee chairman Labor Senator Alex Gallacher on Tuesday about the thousands of pages of material.

The folders will only be available to committee members and possibly other Senators and their staff under strict conditions for just a single day in a secure room at Parliament House.

Taskforce staff will be on hand to assist Senators and to ensure that the strict rules are not broken. Any leak would be a serious breach of privilege and subject to severe sanctions including jail time.

The Senators will not be allowed to copy, photograph or take any notes.

Defence Minister David Johnston, who is committed to overhauling the archaic military justice system, approved today's controlled viewing.

It is understood that he will delay the government's response to all the reports and hard-hitting reforms of military justice until after the Senate Committee report is tabled in late August.

The DLA Piper Review into allegations of sexual abuse was established in the wake of the so-called 'Skype sex scandal' at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in 2011.

The scandal erupted when a female cadet went public with revelations that she had been secretly filmed and observed having sex with a male cadet.

The Defence Abuse Response Taskforce was established as part of the Government's response to the DLA Piper Review to assess abuse cases prior to 2011.
