FORGET keys in a salad bowl, Silicon Valley swingers are using hi-tech apps and websites to swap sex partners.

Entrepreneur Ben Fuller has created modern technology to lure wealthy San Francisco professionals to "lifestyle parties" where couples mingle, dance and even have sex.

Mr Fuller started throwing the Bronze Party in 2011, in which more than 1300 registered members use apps such as Secret and Auto Date to RSVP and see who is attending.

"In the old days, you never knew where you were going," Mr Fuller told CNN Money.

"Now you get a really good sense. The event details ... even the pictures of the people that are going to be attending the party.

"(It) allows you into the party itself, to choose the people that you're interested in, and if you choose and they choose, you get a notification."

Mr Fuller and a colleague also run Modern Lifestyle, an online platform that connects about 50 sex clubs around America and enables customers to see who is attending. More than $US3 million in tickets were sold last year.

The businessman said his discreet events are attended by white collar workers such as lawyers, engineers and IT professionals who earn more than $US100,000 a year.

For married couple Stella and Greg, partner swapping keeps their relationship exciting.

The engineers have been together for 10 years and attended sex parties for at least two.

"Whereas you might go to a bar, pick up somebody and take them home for the evening if you're single, here it wouldn't be unheard of to do that even if you're married," Greg told CNN Money.

The kinky couple said an evening at the Bronze Party was just like a typical night out.

Back in the 1970s, couples were known to throw "key parties."

Men would toss their keys into a bowl and their wives would go home with the male guest whose keys she randomly picked out.

Swingers clubs and even swingers cruises are becoming increasingly popular for couples and singletons looking for a good time.

Participants usually have to pay a fee and some parties ban single men from attending.
