McCann cops seek sex attacker

BRITISH detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are looking for a lone intruder who sexually abused five girls during break-ins at holiday homes.

The tanned, dark-haired man is suspected of breaking in to 12 properties where British families were staying in the Algarve, Portugal, between 2004 and 2010.

In four of the incidents, a total of five girls aged between seven and 10 were sexually assaulted. These attacks happened between 2004 and 2006, before Madeleine vanished in 2007.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said tracing the man, who has "a vile interest in young, white, female children", is "a primary concern".

Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were fully briefed on the latest developments in the investigation before they were made public on Wednesday.

"I'm sure the public will understand that the significant features of this offending - a man with a vile interest in young, white, female children, who he is attacking in their beds while they are on holiday with their families - has got a very close resonance to some of the features of Madeleine's disappearance," Mr Redwood said.

"We really need to identify the offender, to bring to a close the trauma and the tragedy that these families have suffered and then seek to establish whether this is connected to Madeleine's disappearance."

The potentially linked break-ins had previously been discounted by Portuguese investigators because they were spread over a wide geographical area and there were no apparent attempts at abduction.

Four of the burglaries were in Carvoeiro, six in the Vale da Parra, Praia da Gale district, and two in Praia da Luz.

Nine of the 12 incidents were reported to Portuguese police at the time they happened, but British investigators only became aware of three of those when the victims came forward in response to televised appeals last year.

Russian forces seize second base

President Vladimir Putin has signed a treaty claiming the Black Sea region of Crimea as Russian territory.

RUSSIAN forces have seized control of a second Ukrainian navy base in western Crimea, hours after capturing the main navy headquarters in Sevastopol.

Some 50 Ukrainian servicemen were seen filing out of the base at Novoozerne as Russian soldiers stood by, while pro-Moscow militants raised the Russian flag over the base.

The move comes after masked Russian-speaking troops earlier seized control of Ukrainian naval headquarters in Crimea after it was stormed by militiamen.

Pro-Moscow Crimean authorities also detained the Ukrainian navy commander and reportedly blocked the defence minister and another government official from traveling to the peninsula to try to defuse tensions.

Ukraine's military, which is heavily outnumbered in Crimea, has come under increased pressure since the region was nominally incorporated into Russia on Tuesday.

The several hundred militiamen who captured the base in Sevastopol met no resistance. Sevastopol is also the home port of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, and tens of thousands of Russian-led troops are now patrolling Crimea.

It came a day after a confrontation between Ukrainian soldiers and pro-Russian militia left two dead.

The Russian-speaking troops, who arrived on the base after the storming, wore helmets, flak jackets and uniforms with no identifying insignia.

By afternoon, they were in full control of the naval headquarters, a set of three-story boxy white concrete buildings with blue trim.

It was not immediately clear how many, if any, Ukrainian servicemen remained on the base.

Ukraine's Defence Ministry said no one was injured in the raid, which it said was led by pro-Russian militiamen and Cossacks.

ENGRAGED UKRAINE OUT OF OPTIONS

The ministry said in its statement that Rear Adm. Sergei Haiduk was detained by unknown people after the storming of the fleet headquarters.

The Russian state ITAR-Tass news agency reported that he was being questioned by Crimean prosecutors.

Ukraine's defence minister and deputy prime minister had planned to travel to Crimea today in a bid to avert an escalation in hostilities.

Escalation...Chief of the Russian Black Sea Fleet Alexander Vitko leaves the Ukrainian navy headquarters after they were seized by pro-Russian forces in Sevastopol, Crimea. Picture: AP Source: AP

The prime minister in Crimea warned after the announcement of their departure that they would be turned back, however.

"They are not welcome in Crimea,'' Sergei Aksyonov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

"They will not be allowed to enter Crimea. They will be sent back.''

Interfax later cited Welfare Minister Lyudmila Denisova as saying the officials had been denied entry to Crimea. She said an emergency session of the National Security and Defense Council will held in response.

At the Ukrainian navy headquarters, an Associated Press photographer said the militiamen took down the gate and made their way onto the base.

They then raised the Russian flag on the square by the headquarters.

The unarmed militiamen waited for an hour on the square and, following the arrival of the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, they took over the building.

The AP photographer was able to enter the headquarters and saw the militia roaming around while the Ukrainian servicemen were packing up and leaving.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty to incorporate Crimea into Russia following a referendum Sunday in which residents of the region overwhelmingly backed the move.

PUTIN'S CRIMEA SPEECH: FIVE MOST RIDICULOUS MOMENTS

Jubilant crowds in Moscow and other cities across Russia hailed the annexation, while Ukraine's new government called Putin a threat to the "civilised world and international security,'' and the US and the European Union threatened tougher sanctions against Moscow.

On Monday, Washington and Brussels targeted Russian and Crimean officials with visa bans and asset freezes.

Witness details Reeva’s final moments

A POLICE ballistics expert has offered key testimony in the trial of South African athlete Oscar Pistorius as the court sought to establish whether he shot his girlfriend intentionally.

After the testimony the court adjourned uuntil Monday as prosecutors asked for extra time to consult with their final witnesses before closing their case against the Paralympian.

Reeva Steenkamp was first hit in the hip and was in a defensive position in the toilet of Pistorius's flat when the South African Paralympic star's last shot hit her head in the early hours of Valentine's Day 2013, Chris Mangena testified.

"The best probable explanation is the deceased was initially upright behind the closed door; she sustained a penetrating wound in the right side of the hip,'' Mangena said.

The 29-year-old model and law graduate then fell onto a magazine rack where another bullet hit her right elbow, he said.

The last bullet hit her head, clipping her raised left hand, Mangena said.

"The deceased was seated in a defensive position,'' he said.

"The arm was lifted up, and was in front of her chest.''

"You've both hands forward, with the left and right hand crossing the head?'' asked prosecutor Gerrie Nel, mimicking the position with his own arms.

"That is correct,'' his witness answered.

The sequence of shots speaks to whether Steenkamp could have screamed during the shooting.

Witnesses have testified to a woman's terrified screams, but the defence says she was hit first in the head and therefore could not have screamed.

Mangena also testified Pistorius could have been as close as 60 centimetres to the toilet door, or as far away as 220 centimetres, when he fired.

The distance from the door could shed light on whether Pistorius fired in a panic or approached the cubicle in a calculated plan to hit his target.

The ballistics report will be key in the state's case of premeditated murder against Pistorius.

The sprinter says Steenkamp's death was a terrible accident, and that he shot her through the locked toilet door after he mistook her for an intruder when she went to the toilet.

Pistorius, 27, sat with his head in his hands, while Steenkamp's mother and relatives in the public gallery lowered their heads when graphic images of the blood-splattered bathroom were shown.

Flight MH370 top 10 theories

Friends and family of the captain and a flight engineer aboard the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 leap to their defence. Paul Chapman reports

WAS lost flight MH370 the victim of a midair heist of gold bullion? Has it landed but remains hidden? Or was it a terrorist hijacking?

Speculation grows as Australia leads the Indian Ocean search for clues.

TOP 10 THEORIES - WHAT MAY HAVE HAPPENED TO FLIGHT MH370

1. FIRE

A fire may have broken out on the aircraft shortly after last contact was made with air traffic control. The pilot may have made a sharp left turn and attempted to return to a Malaysian airport.

Chris Goodfellow, a Canadian pilot with 20 years experience, believes Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah was taking a direct route to Palau Langkawi, a 3962m airstrip with an approach over water and no real obstacle. If the plane had turned back towards Kuala Lumpur, it would have needed to cross a series of high ridges.

According to him, an electrical fire could explain MH370's failure to communicate.

He said the flight crew was most likely overcome by smoke and the plane continued in the same direction until it ran out of fuel or fire destroyed the control surfaces and it crashed.

2. DECOMPRESSION

A gradual decompression could also explain MH370's disappearance.

Central Queensland University aviation expert Ron Bishop said a fire or some other accident could have led to a gradual decompression of the aircraft.

The pilots may have tried to return to Malaysia but passed out after turning the aircraft around and the plane continued flying until it ran out of fuel.

IS THIS THE MOST PLAUSIBLE THEORY ON FLIGHT MH370?

3. MECHANICAL FAILURE

The plane may have suffered a mechanical failure that required the aircraft to turn back to Malaysia. However, the problem could have become so severe the pilots lost control of the aircraft and the plane may have continued flying until it ran out of fuel or crashed.

4. HIJACKING

A passenger may have gained access to the cockpit and hijacked the plane for a political, psychological or financial reason. If the passenger was armed, they might have threatened the pilot and forced them to fly off course.

Otherwise, if the passenger was a trained pilot, they could have taken over the controls.

Malaysia Airlines has said it was "shocked" over a TV report that MH370 copilot Fariq Abdul Hamid had allowed two women into the cockpit on a flight in 2011.

5. TERROR ATTACK

The plane may have fallen victim to a terrorist attack.

The presence of two passengers travelling on stolen passports fuelled early fears of a terror link.

Authorities now believe the two Iranian men were simply illegal migrants, but CIA director John Brennan has said a terror attack has not been ruled out.

The search area covers a massive region - a northern corridor from the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan through northern Thailand and a southern corridor from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean - with no potential target or destination pinpointed so far.

6. PILOT INVOLVEMENT

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Saturday evidence indicated that its communication systems were manually switched off and the airliner was deliberately diverted.

This suggests that one or both of the pilots could have been involved in diverting the Beijing-bound flight and fly it towards the Indian Ocean.

Malaysian authorities have raided the homes of Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah and copilot Fariq Abdul Hamid searching for evidence to link them with its disappearance.

Captain Zaharie was reportedly a fanatical supporter of Anwar Ibrahim, who was incensed by his sodomy verdict.

7. PILOT SUICIDE

While rare, there have been cases of pilots crashing planes to take their own lives.

In December 1997, a SilkAir Boeing 737 from Jakarta to Singapore plunged into a river in Indonesia with the loss of 104 passengers and crew. US investigators blamed pilot suicide.

A suicide bid "is possible and if that's the case there might not be a lot of debris because the plane would have come down in relative structural integrity", said Terence Fan, an aviation expert at Singapore Management University.

"The aeroplane is not meant to float and if the aeroplane sinks in the water, water will go inside because the door seals are not meant to seal water."

However, nothing has emerged to suggest any serious psychological problems with either of the pilots who were flying MH370.

8. PLANE LANDED BUT IS HIDDEN

The lack of debris and apparent absence of any data indicating impact has led to speculation that the plane may have landed safely and be hidden in a remote location.

However, the size of the Boeing 777 and the amount of space needed for it to land make it unlikely that this was the flight's fate, Greg Waldron, Asia managing editor at industry publication Flightglobal, said.

"The triple seven is a very large aircraft that requires a long airport-size runway to land ... it's possible, but I think not probable."

9. COVER UP

The apparent slowness to reveal key radar data has led to speculation that countries may know more about the plane's likely whereabouts, but are unwilling to share due to a perceived security risk.

Jakarta-based independent aviation analysts Gerry Soejatman said that if the aircraft flew north across Asia following one of two air corridors currently being searched, it would be remarkable if no one had detected it.

"It's extremely difficult to comprehend that so many countries might have seen it and kept it under wraps."

10. THEFT

Some have speculated the Boeing 777 may have been stolen, either to be used in a later terror attack or because it was carrying a valuable cargo, such as gold.

Malaysia Airlines chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya told reporters the most remarkable cargo being carried on MH370 was 3-4 tonnes of mangosteens.

Experts have also played down the likelihood the plane would have been taken for a terrorist attack, pointing out that there are thousands of business jets and cargo planes that could be captured and used much more easily.

Fake serial killer finally freed

(Miscarriage of justice ... Sture Bergwall was cleared of all charges. Source: AFP

A SWEDISH man long considered Scandinavia's most notorious serial killer has been released from more than 20 years of psychiatric detention, eight months after being cleared of all charges.

"The court rules that the forensic psychiatric care of Sture Bergwall shall continue and change from closed to open care," the administrative court in Falun said in a statement.

Sture Bergwall, 64 — previously known as Thomas Quick — confessed to dozens of murders in the early 1990s and was convicted to life imprisonment for eight of them and held at a psychiatric ward in Saeter in northern Sweden since 1991.

He was later cleared of all the murders due to lack of evidence, amid revelations that he had been heavily medicated at the time of the confessions.

The court ruling which ordered his release added that he still suffers from a 'personality disorder" but not to the extent that he should be held in custody.

Several conditions were placed on his release, including that he avoid alcohol and drugs, undergoes regular treatment and accepts help from local authorities in his new home.

Bergwall has blogged and tweeted regularly in recent years and has said he planned to move further north to live in the mountains and devote himself to writing about his experience.

"Those acquittals show there was a legal scandal ... it was not my mental health that formed the basis of my detention, it was the judges' and the clinic's reputations," he wrote on Wednesday.

"I have a lot to tell and that is what I will spend my time on now ... I look to the future with great confidence."

The convictions against Bergwall have been dubbed Sweden's greatest miscarriage of justice in recent times because of the swiftness with which he was found guilty of the eight murders, which occurred between 1976 and 1988.

During psychological counselling, following an armed robbery conviction, he confessed to all eight murders as well as more than 20 others in Sweden, Norway and Finland for which he was not tried.

He often described how he butchered his victims and how in at least one case he ate body parts.

In December 2008, however, he suddenly retracted all his confessions, saying he had been craving attention at the time and had been heavily medicated by doctors.

In July 2013 he was acquitted of the last murder charge.

A number of high-ranking opposition politicians and legal experts have called for an independent commission to examine how Swedish courts could have convicted Bergwall despite the lack of evidence.

Justice Minister Beatrice Ask announced a review in July 2013.

Stones support ‘soul brother’ Mick

The Rolling Stones have postponed their tour of Australia and New Zealand after L'Wren Scott's death.

MICK Jagger's band mates have thrown their support behind the Rolling Stones frontman as he grapples with his grief after the sudden death of fashion designer and partner L'Wren Scott.

Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts confirmed they will return to Australia for the 14 On Fire tour which was to have kicked off in Perth last night.

It was postponed after Scott was found dead in her New York apartment with Jagger and the band now heading back to the US to prepare for her funeral.

The tour is being rescheduled for later this year, possibly in October.

"No one saw this coming. Mick's always been my soul brother and we love him ... we're thick as thieves and we're all feeling for the man," Richards said.

Wood said the Stones would return to the concert stage "as soon as we can" but their priority was to support Jagger.

"This is such terrible news and right now the important thing is that we are all pulling together to offer Mick our support and help him through this sad time," he said.

Drummer Charlie Watts reiterated that Scott's death had shocked the entire Stones family.

"Needless to say we are all completely shocked but our first thought is to support Mick at this awful time," he said.

"We intend to come back to Australia and New Zealand as soon as it proves possible."

The band sought to reassure fans that the shows would be rescheduled, even after many ticketholders outraged Stones fans with their impatient demands for updates on the future of the tour only hours after Scott's death.

Fans defended the band on Facebook and Twitter, calling for patience and compassion as Jagger struggled to comprehend the sudden loss of his partner of more than a decade.

Malaysians united in MH370 hunt

Investigators are working to recover data deleted from a flight simulator used by the missing MH370 captain.

Coming together ... A Muslim man signs a banner while being watched by representative from Christian, Hindu and Buddhist community after a special prayers held in Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin mosque for the missing Malaysian airliner MH370. Source: Getty Images

THE imam cupped his palms before his face and invited the congregation to pray. "Oh Allah, return to us those who are lost. Oh, Allah, grant safe passage to MH370,'' he said.

The prayer was not unusual. The setting was.

Gathered in the courtyard of a shopping mall in a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, the Muslim religious leader was followed by a Christian reading from the Bible, then a Buddhist monk, a Hindu and finally a Taoist priest echoing the imam's pleas before hundreds of worshippers in a largely Muslim country where religious intolerance has been on the rise.

The baffling mystery over the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 with 239 people on March 8 has united Malaysia, a nation of numerous ethnicities, as never before in recent memory.

Tuesday night's interfaith ceremony would have been inconceivable 11 days ago in the country of 28 million people where religious differences and bigotry have often been on open display. For Malaysians the sight of non-Muslims bowing respectfully as Imam Hilman Nordin said prayers from the rostrum was an incredible step toward unity. While there have been interfaith prayers before, they have always been without a Muslim representative.

Malays, who account for about 60 per cent of the population, are almost exclusively Muslim. Chinese, who are Buddhists, Christians and Taoists, represent about 21 per cent, while Indians, who are Hindus, Sikhs and Christians, are about 7 per cent.

Silver lining ... Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims pose for a portrait after a special prayers held in Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin mosque for the missing Malaysian airliner MH370. Source: Getty Images

Muslims have been at loggerheads with Christians and Hindus in recent years, and some sermons last month identified Christians and Jews as enemies of Islam. Hard-line Muslims have called for the burning of Bibles and in January firebombs were thrown into a church compound. A few years ago, a group of Muslims stomped on the severed head of a cow outside a Hindu temple. Cows are sacred to Hindus.

"In the shared sadness of loss, the tragedy has revealed and reinforced a strong sense of community,'' said Bridget Welsh, a political scientist from Singapore Management University. "If anything, this is a silver lining of the tragedy.''

DESPERATE FAMILIES DRAGGED AWAY BY SECURITY

FLIGHT MH370 - TOP 10 THEORIES OF WHAT HAPPENED

Some of the enmity rises from the right of non-Muslims to use the word "Allah.'' The government and hardliners say Allah — the Arabic word for God — is exclusively for Malay Muslims. The Roman Catholic Church has challenged that assertion in an ongoing court case which many Muslims see as a threat to the dominance of Islam. Most indigenous tribes in Borneo are Christians and speak only the Malay language in which the word for God is Allah.

The case remains unresolved in court and religious tension continues to fester.

In January this year, Islamic authorities seized more than 300 Malay-language Bibles from the office of a Christian group because they used the word Allah.

This row over a single word has blackened the country's image for religious tolerance and hardened the longstanding sense of alienation among ethnic and religious minorities who feel discriminated against by decades of affirmative action policies that benefit Malay Muslims in business, jobs and education.

But such differences have been set aside — at least temporarily — following the disappearance of the plane after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing on March 8.

Thousands of Malaysians of all ethnic backgrounds were also touched by the tweets of Maira Elizabeth Nari, daughter of the chief steward aboard the plane.

"It has been more than 100 hours. Where are you?'' she wrote in one tweet. One of her 40,000 followers encouraged her, saying, "Keep on praying, pray to Allah.''

Prayers ... Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims attend a special prayers held in Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin mosque for the missing Malaysian airliner MH370. Source: Getty Images

At the interfaith vigil at the Curve in the Kuala Lumpur suburb of Damansara Perdana, leaders of several religious groups went on stage to offer their prayers. Many in the crowd wore white T-shirts with the words "Unite for MH370'' and held white balloons with handwritten messages of hope.

"Today is a rare occasion for us to bring unity, peace and harmony,'' said a Buddhist monk who chanted a prayer for the plane's safety.

"Please come back home. We are all in tears waiting for you, brothers and sisters,'' said Shantha Venugopal, the Hindu representative. The Taoist priest beseeched God for divine intervention while the Sikh leader pleaded for a closure to the plane's disappearance.

Teh Su They, whose Global Peace Foundation co-organised the gathering with local singer Reshmonu, a Hindu, said the tragedy showed that "deep inside the heart of every Malaysian, we care for one another, that we are one family. In this difficult time we need to come closer to support each other.''

In a statement, Reshmonu said, "For one night, we forget our divisions and stand united for ... faith, compassion and love.''

"Because of this tragedy, we stand as one and respect one another's religion. I see this as Allah's wisdom behind this tragedy to reunite all Malaysians,'' said Nurul Arfarina Nasir, a 28-year-old housewife wearing a headscarf and holding a white balloon.

Sochi fall paralysed skier

A RUSSIAN freestyle skier who suffered a serious accident at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games is permanently paralysed, Russia's Freestyle Federation said Wednesday, citing her doctors.

Maria Komissarova, 23, is in a German clinic after suffering a fractured spine in a crash in training for the ski cross event at Sochi 2014, by far the worst accident of the Winter Games.

"Due to the severity of the injury, the functions of the spinal canal are not regenerating," the federation cited specialists at the German clinic as saying.

"In the opinion of the specialists, Masha will be able to move around independently using special equipment," the statement said, using a diminutive for Maria.

Komissarova is due to spend another 10 weeks in the German clinic learning to adapt to her condition and will then undergo a long period of treatment and rehabilitation, the federation said.

Komissarova herself wrote on Instagram late last month: "I do not feel my body lower than my belly button ... But I am strong and I know that some day I will definitely be on my feet again."

While still hospitalised in Russia, Komissarova had received a personal visit from President Vladimir Putin at her bedside.

Oprah lays down law with Lilo

Drama queen...New reality show Lindsay gives an inside look at the chaos surrounding the actor. Source: Supplied

A FED-UP Oprah Winfrey told Lindsay Lohan to "cut the bull****" during the chaotic filming of her new reality TV show.

The first trailer for Lohan's docu-series, Lindsay, gives a glimpse into the never-ending chaos surrounding the troubled actor.

The show follows Lohan fresh out of rehab, as she moves to New York with a sober coach and attempts to reconnect with her family and jumpstart her career.

However, her new start quickly spirals into chaos and frustration on the part of producers, the trailer reveals.

Lohan cancels shoots, gets herself locked out of the apartment, storming out in tears and generally throwing the show into chaos. Even her sober coach is lost for words when asked if she is staying off booze.

The erratic behaviour leads to some tough love from Winfrey.

"This is exactly what everybody said was going to happen and I believed differently," says Winfrey. "She doesn't understand, this is your life."

Winfrey then lays down the law, telling Lohan that if she's not really interested in changing, they can cancel the show right then and there.

"I really want you to win. I really do," says Winfrey. "If that isn't what you want, I'm OK with that. I will tell these guys to pack up and leave today. But you need to cut the bull***, you really do."

In behind-the-scenes footage, Lohan admits she is struggling to change her image of "chaos", and knows she is blowing her last chance to redeem her career.

"It's like good, good, good and then there's this thing in my head that's like 'oh, time to sabotage", Lohan tells the camera.

True to her word, Lohan is then shown having tearful fights with handlers, storming out of rooms, getting herself locked out of her apartment and throwing the entire show's schedule into chaos. Even her sober coach is lost for words when asked if she's still sober.

A PREGNANT woman drove a car full of children into the ocean as horrified witnesses tried desperately to help.

The unidentified woman from South Carolina was caught on video at Daytona Beach, Florida, as she drove down the beach and into the water.

"My friend pointed out that there was a car getting really close to the beach, and actually started driving on the water. I saw a kid in the back, like waving his arms around, like screaming, 'Help us! Help us!' and the car kept going deeper," one witness told CBS News.

Tim Tesseneer and another man were one of the first to reach the car.

"She was pretty deep, and the water was moving the van, and the kids were screaming. He got the two kids out while she dove out the window, the driver's window ... just belly-flopped into the water," Mr Tesseneer said.

It was at that moment that he realised there was still another child in the car.

"The kids are screaming, 'There's a baby, there's a baby'," Tesseneer recalled. "I get back to the van, and by this time a couple of lifeguards have made it down there to us, and come to find out there's a baby still strapped in the seat, but we got her."

Authorities are investigating how and why the vehicle got into the water. All three children, aged 10, 9, and 3, and their mother were taken to a nearby hospital to be examined.

AS if Lena Dunham's not busy enough writing, directing, producing and starring in her hit TV show Girls.

Now she's being tapped to write a four-part story for the iconic Archie comic series.

According to Comic Book Resources, Dunham was asked to write for Archie series by Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, after she spoke of her love of the evergreen series in a Q&A with J.J. Abrams and novelist Doug Dorst in New York last November.

"We sent her a box of tons of Archie books," Aguirre-Sacasa said.

"She devoured them all, and maybe a week or two later came back with her pitch."

While Aguirre-Sacasa wouldn't share any details for the unnamed story, he said that the 2015 comic series would be "very contemporary".

"It's a classic Archie story," he said, "with a definitely unique, Lena spin."

"She brings a unique point-of-view to all these characters, but she also loves them, and knows what makes them work," Aguirre-Sacasa said.

"It's really good stuff, and obviously it's going to be a huge deal for Archie."

"To have someone like that say, 'Not only am I a fan, I'd love to write something,' it just epitomises all the hard work we've put in for the last five years," added co-COO Jon Goldwater.

Dunham isn't the first on-screen wunderkind to make a foray into comics - writer/director/actor Kevin Smith has written multiple titles, including high-profile stints on Daredevil and Green Arrow in the late '90s and early 2000s.

Meanwhile, Dunham has her hands full on-screen; the third season of Girls is currently airing (she's about to start writing the fourth season), while she's set to host Saturday Night Live this weekend in New York.

Aussies pull off dramatic victory

AUSTRALIA has claimed a dramatic 2-1 series victory over South Africa after the third Test at Newlands descended into acrimony.

South Africa were dismissed with just 4.3 overs remaining when Ryan Harris bowled Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in the space of three deliveries to give Australia a 245-run victory, sending the Australians into wild celebrations.

Earlier tailender Dale Steyn had to be restrained by drink-carrying substitute Robin Petersen during a slanging match with the Australians after batting partner Vernon Philander survived thanks to a controversial DRS review that overturned his dismissal with 15 overs remaining.

The Fox Sports cricket panel discuss suggestions that Australia's players attempted to alter the ball in the third Test by deliberately throwing it short in the field.

The Australians were furious and surrounded umpire Aleem Dar, who originally gave Philander out only to reverse his decision on the advice of video umpire Richard Illingworth.

Steyn and Michael Clarke had a series of increasingly animated exchanges but the pair appeared to make up a short time later when they gave each other a pat as they passed at the end of an over.

Philander, who played a wonderful rear guard innings of 51 not out in 105 balls, was on 45 when he fended at a nasty bouncer from Mitchell Johnson which lobbed to Alex Doolan at short leg.

Australia have been made to work for their wickets but came up trumps before lunch, dispatching of Kyle Abbott and AB de Villiers.

The umpire decision review system was brought in to improve decision-making and reduce controversy but it fanned the flames of frustration yesterday.

Philander reeled away to square leg holding his shoulder and then called for a review. While real time snicko suggested the ball flicked Philander's right glove before crashing into his shoulder, the video umpire appeared to rule that the batsman's hand was off the bat.

It was the same scenario that Michael Kasprowicz faced during the dramatic Edgbaston Test of 2005, which England won by two runs to level the series at two-all. Kasprowicz did not have the benefit of a video review.

It was not the only controversy on a tense final day, with umpires Dar and Kumar Dharmasena warning the Australians about the way they were throwing the ball into rough areas around the pitch to scruff it up in the hope of generating reverse swing.

Shortly before lunch the umpires called Clarke over and the three had an animated, arm-waving conversation.

Dar was holding the ball in one hand and appeared to be gesturing to it, however the ball was not changed and the umpires did not penalise Australia five runs, which they must do under the playing conditions if they believe the ball has been deliberately tampered with.

The victory gave captain Michael Clarke seven wins from eight Tests following a 5-0 whitewash of England and moved Australia to second on the International Cricket Council rankings ahead of India.

South Africa remains on top despite losing another series at home to Australia.

After Philander's decision was overturned there were concerns that South Africa may repeat their Adelaide great escape of last season when they lasted more than nine hours and kept out 148 overs to finish on 8-248.

Faf du Plessis was unable to repeat his Adelaide heroics, when he defied Australia for seven and a half hours scoring an unbeaten century. Yesterday he was leg before wicket to part time leg-spinner Steve Smith for 47 made in two and a half hours.

Australia's unique record of never losing a series in the new South Africa remains intact.

It is a remarkable achievement which now extends to seven series in a row since South Africa returned from sporting isolation more than two decades ago.
