THE ALLEGED "bully" that was beaten up by a former UFC fighter is astoundingly not angry about the leaked footage - he's peeved at the thought of being coined a loser.

According to Patrick Martin, he and Josh "The Dentist" Neer engaged in a three-minute sparring round in which Neer "couldn't score or take me down".

But what the audience has seen is a 14-second clip showing Martin being beaten to a pulp.

He claims what we're not seeing is "me hitting him, him throwing wild".

"Everything you see is after the round bell sounded as I turned away from him picking up my mouth piece I dropped after the round," he told MMA Fighting.

"I'm not scared of f**king Josh Neer! Nor any man! He don't wanna show the full video so I'll let him think he won! I seen his game plan fighting me and that's not gonna work!"

The former UFC fighter has remained adamant he's the victim after the violent clip was posted to YouTube showing the 5'5 pocket rocket brutally beating the 6'6 "bully" at a gym.

Furthermore, he added he posted the clip in the hope said bully would "shut up" after continuing to taunt him even after the "full contact" fight went down.

Josh "The Dentist" Neer claimed Patrick Martin had been consistently taunting him on social media, so he had enough and figured if he could type tough, he could fight tough.

"Basically the guys a dumbass and been talking shit about MMA fighters for a month," Neer told Bloody Elbow (don't mind the spelling).

"On and on, I usually ignore him but this Saturday he wrote me on Facebook the message i gave. He had written 10 messages to me talking sh*t which I ignored, but this time I said if you really want to fight come to the gym Monday at 5:30."

"I don't know what his problem is but ... he just acts like a bully. That what he seems like to me, just a bully.

Yet despite all the bigtime bully talk, Patrick Martin walked away with a fat lip and — apparently — failed to emerge from the fight victorious.

Warning, this isn't for the faint-hearted.

Either way, officials are so appalled at the footage, the Iowa Athletic Commission has launched an investigation into the violent fight, reports TMZ.

"We are aware of the situation. I have our legal team taking a thorough look at our rules," IAC Executive Director Joe Walsh said.

"We're checking to see if we have anything on the books that covers this."

In a Facebook post from his now-deleted personal account, Neer said he hoped Mr Martin "can learn a lesson".

"Ok I guess I have to defend myself since everyone's talking crap," Neer wrote.

"This fool has been talking crap about mma fighters for months. He's 6'6″ 270 lbs so Im not gonna sit her and let this fool bully everyone.

"If he was my size I woulda just ignored it. Then he writes me on fb and I tell him if he wants to fight then show up at 530 at practice (40 miss after I was already practicing) so we fought. Hopefully he can learn a lesson and humble himself."

Neer's last professional MMA fight was in October of last year and has since been released from the UFC. He has 13 professional fights under his belt.

Bali Nine families’ desperate TV bid

Julie Bishop says she is disappointed that the latest appeal for the Bali Nine pair of death row has failed.

THE anguished families of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran have begged Indonesian President Joko Widodo not to kill the two young men.

In an interview with Indonesia's MetroTV station, aired last night, the Chans and Sukumarans told of their emotional distress in a bid to take their message of rehabilitation to Jakarta and the president.

"I don't want them to execute my son. He has done a lot of good things, he is a good person, he is a changed person and I am begging the president not to execute him, to give him another chance, for him to stay in the prison and continue to do all the good things he is doing," Sukumaran's mother, Raji Sukumaran, said in the message she hopes the president will hear.

Michael Chan, Andrew Chan's brother, told of his family's embarrassment at the shame the Bali Nine duo's crime has brought Indonesia.

"As a family we feel embarrassed because this has happened … we know it has caused a lot of shame for Indonesia and we apologise," Mr Chan said.

"(In) 10 years he has done a lot of good things for Indonesia inside the prison system."

It was the family's first Indonesian television interview and comes as authorities say the two men will be among 10 drug traffickers shot dead at Nusa Kambangan soon.

No date has been set but authorities say preparations at the island are 90 per cent complete. New isolation cells to house the 10 who will be shot.

Sukumaran's parents, Raji and Sam, and siblings Chinthu and Brintha, have been in Bali for the past month, living on a constant knife-edge, unable to sleep or have a proper meal as the fate of the two Australians hangs in the balance.

Chan's frail parents, Helen and Ken, were also in Bali for three weeks but made the heartbreaking decision to leave after 10 days as their health suffered.

They left with heavy hearts, knowing they may have said goodbye for the last time.

Mrs Chan may return if her health improves but Mr Chan is not well. Older brother Michael Chan remains in Bali, with a group of close-knit family friends.

Every hour and every minute is precious as the two bewildered families, bound by the crime their sons committed 10 years ago, live in a dreadful limbo.

Every day they make a grim-faced vigil into Kerobokan prison, spending time with the two men they desperately pray will be allowed a second chance.

They want authorities to know how much good the two men have achieved in the jail, how they have made an impact and changed so many Indonesian lives and helped prisoners get off drugs and feel self-esteem for the first time.

Many prisoners and former prisoners have testified to the positive impact Chan and Sukumaran have had upon them and some have even offered to take Chan's place before the firing squad.

Prisoners have learned English, computing, art, first aid, screen printing, graphic arts, psychology, philosophy, cooking and many other skills through a raft of courses set up in the jail by Sukumaran and Chan. They have gained certificates and gone onto jobs upon release.

Sukumaran has become an accomplished artist. Chan is a pastor, ministering to prisoners who need succour and someone to help them.

Each day the torture and uncertainty continues. One minute the families are buoyed by news of a delay. The next hopes are snatched from them, dashed as officials say the executions will go ahead, without naming a date.

Authorities said yesterday that 10 people would be executed — nine foreigners and one Indonesian, all drug traffickers. Chan and Sukumaran are among them.

For Chan, 31 and Sukumaran, 33, life has become an emotional roller coaster, living hour by terrified hour.

Michael Chan says it's too hard to put into words how the family is feeling. Some days they have no words.

"It is too hard to put it into words," Mr Chan told News Corporation.

He says the last three weeks have been the most emotionally draining and trying since the whole Bali Nine saga began almost a decade ago. But they will never give up hope.

"As long as they are still alive there is hope. I hope that someone sees exactly what these boys are doing in terms of what they have done and what they have achieved," Mr Chan says of the rehabilitation and work programs the duo has set up in jail, which have benefited scores of Indonesian prisoners who have been released and gained jobs.

One week ago the Sukumarans were terrified the two young men were about to transferred to Nusa Kambangan.

It was Monday night and a decision was made to bring all Myuran's most precious art books and supplies out of the jail the next day.

That day, the family sat around in the jail, barely talking. Mum Raji was in tears. Myuran was struggling to hold it all together.

"It was really like we were at the brink, the absolute brink," Chinthu told News Corporation.

Extended family members — aunts and uncles who had held Sukumaran since he was a baby, cousins who look up to him — were all there.

"We were at that very low point, it was the lowest point we were at since this whole thing started," he said. "No-one slept on the Monday night."

Then, as the art books were being taken from jail by Sukumaran's emotional relatives, the news came through that there was a delay and there was a crescendo of relief. Mrs Sukumaran was in tears. They hugged each other and Sukumaran. He felt like he could breathe again for the first time in a long time.

Show of force ... a Sukhoi fighter jet flies over Kerobokan prison. Picture: Adam Taylor Source: News Corp Australia

Now, one week later, the limbo continues. The fear is tangible. On Tuesday two Sukhoi fighter jets, to be used as security in their transfer to Nsua Kambangan, flew over and around the jail three times in an apparent show of force.

If the idea was to spread fear and terror, they achieved that.

But no-one is giving up hope just yet.

The $50 million nap that choked Sydney

Two people have been taken to hospital following a crash on Harbour Bridge causing traffic chaos.

A WOMAN who drifted into oncoming traffic on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and crashed head-on into a taxi, had fallen asleep at the wheel.

That one accident, at 6.40am yesterday, triggered traffic gridlock across Sydney, brought every major city-bound route to a standstill, and was estimated to have cost the NSW economy $50 million.

The taxi and hire van collided head on this morning. Picture: Matt Elliott Source: News Corp Australia

The 37-year-old woman was driving a rented van full of suitcases south across the Harbour Bridge when she allegedly fell asleep and drifted into oncoming traffic causing a five-car pile up.

The woman, a middle-aged taxi driver and another motorist were taken to hospital, but for Sydney's commuters the pain was only just beginning.

The snarl stretched 21km, from Epping in the north to Eastlakes in the south.

Commuters complained of a doubling in commute times, with some having three hours added to their journey.

Emergency crews reopened all northbound and two southbound lanes at 8am.

NSW Police interviewed the male taxi driver at St Vincent's Hospital and confirmed that the woman driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.

AMP chief economist Shane Oliver said the cost to the economy was about $50 million.

"It is not just time lost, it is trucks that are failing to make deliveries, which affects production schedules, taxis doing nothing for two hours, workers losing two hours of output and people missing their flights."

"An older model Toyota HiAce van crossed into the oncoming traffic and hit a taxi head-on 15m in front of me.

"Then I slammed into the side of the van. I was going about 50 to 55km/h.

"I had enough time to slam on my brakes and I hit the van at 40km/h. My car was not too bad. I don't think it is written off. The van and the taxi are gone, written off. It was chaos."

Bus commuters were moved on to trains at Macquarie Park and North Sydney.

Mr Elliott, who walked away from the smash without a scratch, said people were calm after the crash. "Nobody was screaming hysterically, though they calmed down the lady in the van. She was screaming to get out immediately after the accident," Mr Elliott said.

Central Coast tradesman Terry Stevenson said his trip to Sydney doubled in duration.

"The trip from the coast normally takes one-and-a-half hours but it was more like three hours today," he said. "It's just ridiculous."

Another minor smash on the Anzac Bridge at 9.55am closed one citybound lane, while at 10.30am, a tree branch fell on to a car on College St, next to Hyde Park, temporarily closing that road and adding to a day of chaos.

Inside the Bali Nine duo’s killing field

The lawyers for the Bali Nine duo on death row plan to appeal their latest failed legal challenge.

This is the most detailed view seen by the outside world of the firing range where the lives of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran and eight others will be taken.

The firing range, located behind a police station on the island of Nusakambangan, was inaugurated at a ceremony of police and prison authorities in November.

The event to open the range, replacing an older killing field on top of the prison island, was a matter of some pride. A banner was erected stating "Formal opening of firing range".

The range was given its own name, "Tunggul Panaluan", which refers to a magical wooden staff used by shaman of north Sumatra to ward off evil. The staffs were typically adorned with body parts taken from sacrificial victims.

In a constantly changing and now confusing series of messages from the Indonesian government, Attorney-General HM Prasetyo said yesterday that 10 people would face the firing squad, rather than the originally scheduled 11.

And he said "we will do it soon".

Coffins arrive ... B Suhendroputro, a funeral director from Cilacap in south Java, has now taken delivery of 10 coffins. One is extra large, for a foreigner. Picture: Ardiles Rante Source: Supplied

Ten coffins have now arrived in Cilacap in readiness for the executions.

News Corp Australia revealed last week that a mortician in Cilacap, B. Suhendroputro, had taken delivery of three coffins.

Since then another seven have arrived. One is extra large, made to hold a big foreigner.

The firing range photo, taken at night, shows how it will be floodlit brightly for the executions to be conducted on the same site where five drug traffickers were shot dead after midnight on January 18.

It also shows the targets the Brimob firing squad use for practice. The round objects on the coloured target posts are set at the average height of a person's heart.

Revealed ... the most detailed inside look so far of the newly built firing range which was officially opened on Nusakambangan island on November 14. Source: Supplied

The victims will first be led through a doorway in the police station and through to the firing range.

Rough calculations from this photo and other corresponding views suggest the range is about 30m wide. Brimob regulations state the firing squads should take position between five and 10m from their targets.

The firing range is surrounded by block-work on two sides and an earthen wall to absorb rounds behind where the victims stand.

Holding up ... Andrew Chan inside Kerobokan Jail on Wednesday. Picture: Adam Taylor Source: News Corp Australia

Each victim will be provided their own 12-man firing squad, with only three shooters in each squad being issued with live rounds.

The firing range is located behind a police station down on the water on the prison island, well away from the high-security Batu prison where the condemned 11 will spend their final three days in isolation cells.

Staying strong ... Myuran Sukumaran inside Kerobokan Jail on Wednesday. Picture: Adam Taylor Source: News Corp Australia

The Australian lawyer for Chan and Sukumaran, Julian McMahon, made a short statement yesterday as his made his way into Kerobokan prison to see his clients.

"This case really is about humanity and humanity crosses borders, humanity is not constrained by sovereignty," Mr McMahon said.

"I am pleading with the President and the Attorney General to look at the humanity of this case, to look at the merits of this case of Sukumaran and Chan," he said.

Not giving up ... Australian lawyer Julian McMahon gives a statement as he arrives at Kerobokan Jail today. Picture: Lukman S. Bintoro Source: Supplied

And their Indonesian lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis said he would not quit despite Tuesday's decision by the State Administrative Court to reject hearing a case that challenged President Joko Widodo's right to reject the clemency pleas without individual consideration.

"There is no way the Attorney General can ignore the legal process," said Mr Lubis. "He has to respect the legal process because Indonesia is a state based on law.

"If you don't respect the law what is the point of having a State based on the rule of law. As simple as that.

Legal support ... Indonesian lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis said he would not quit. Picture: Lukman S. Bintoro Source: Supplied

"We still have hope, of course. I am still optimistic that we have a strong legal ground to challenge the rejection of the clemency. We did not file that if we didn't have a strong legal ground."

Authorities have said their preference was that all victims be executed simultaneously, though it is not clear whether the range could accommodate so many firing squads at the one time.

Prosecutors have consistently said they would be shot as soon as Nusakambangan was properly prepared. That involves building a brick wall in the Batu high-security prison to separate the main prison population from the death-row prisoners.

"If all the preparation have been completed, we will do it soon," said Mr Prasetyo. It is understood that wall is almost complete.

It is believed the revised execution list comprises three Nigerians, two Australians and one each from France, Ghana, Brazil, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Mr Suhendroputro — who washed, cleansed and dressed three bodies after the January 18 executions — will again be tasked with waiting in a makeshift mortuary tent, just near the firing range, to tend to bodies when they are brought to him after the executions.

He told News Corp that when he received the bodies, the entry wounds had already been stitched shut by a government medical officer at the scene where they fell.

TRANSGENDER model Andreja Pejic has hit the catwalk for the first time as a woman, a year after undergoing sex reassignment surgery.

The 23-year-old model, formerly known as Andrej, walked for designer Giles Deacon at London Fashion Week with dramatic black lips and a slicked back do.

The Australian-born beauty shared snaps of her debut on her Instagram account, including one of her on the runway.

"It feels amazing to be making my runway debut for one of my favourite British designers #Giles. Thank you to @kegrand and @guineapiggiles #thereturn #LFW," she captioned the sultry snap.

The Serbian-born model, who underwent gender reassignment surgery in early 2014, also shared photos of her cosying up to models such as Kendall Jenner.

"Backstage ki-ki #LFW @kendalljenner #Giles," she captioned the backstage selfie with Jenner.

Pejic rose to fame as a male model in 2010 when French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld cast her in a womenswear shoot.

She enjoyed a successful career as an androgynous model before her surgery.

Pejic made her first public appearance as a woman in Melbourne in October last year, surprising designer Jean Paul Gaultier on the eve of the opening of his glamour exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria.

‘Youngest female killers’ beg for lives

Death sentences ... Tiffany Cole and Emilia Carr are among the youngest female killers on death row in America. Picture: ABC Source: Supplied

AMERICA'S youngest female killers on death row have issued a new plea for their lives, saying they are victims of an unjust system.

Emilia Carr, 30 is the youngest woman in the country on death row. She shares a cell at Florida's Lowell Correctional Institution with Tiffany Cole, 33, who is the third youngest.

Both women were sexually abused when they were young. Both were convicted of separate murders they say they didn't do and both are fighting to have their death sentences converted to life sentences.

The pair spoke to US ABC's Diane Sawyer saying they are only on death row because they didn't have the money to buy their way out of their situations.

"How many rich people go to prison?" Carr said. "We're all minorities. We're all people who are either minorities or didn't have any, money — any way to say, 'Hey, let me buy my freedom', because it's not free in this country.

"Unfortunately, equality is an illusion," she said.

The women call it "life row" because they choose to focus on the fact that they aren't dead yet.

Jealousy ... Prosecutors say Emilia Carr, 30, killed her boyfriend's wife to be with him. Picture: Supplied Source: Supplied

Carr, a mother of four, was sentenced to die by lethal injection for the 2009 murder of Heather Strong — the wife of Carr's boyfriend, Joshua Fulgham.

Carr is said to have tricked Strong into a storage container where she placed a plastic bag over her head after unsuccessfully trying to break her neck. Strong eventually died of asphyxiation. Carr claims she left before the murder was committed.

"Wouldn't there have been physical evidence?" she told ABC. "I mean, duct tape is some sticky stuff, yet there's no finger prints, no DNA, no hair."

A jury decided 7-5 that she would be sentenced to death, ignoring her defence's evidence of her abuse as a child from her grandfather and father and the fact that her own father tried to have her killed.

Her co-accused, Fulgham, was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement.

Buried couple alive ... Tiffany Cole is 33. Picture: Supplied Source: Supplied

Cole was 26 when she was found guilty of kidnapping and killing her former neighbours Carol and Reggie Sumner.

Cole and three men robbed the couple, tied them up and buried them alive. Photos showed her and the co-defendents celebrating with champagne and handfuls of cash after the crime.

Cole says she helped dig the grave but claims she didn't know it was for the victims.

"I am not the same person anymore," Cole said. "I have peace, I have joy. I have a sound mind."

Both women have lodged appeals — a process that takes an average of 12 years.

Cole's prosecutor Jay Plotkin told ABC that he does not believe that she should be let off.

"I was a prosecutor for more than 20 years. There was not any case that I prosecuted where the crime was more vile or cruel than the torture and murder of the Sumners," he said. "This case lingers on in the heart and soul of our community."

Boston Blizzard Challenge ... Bostonians are diving out of their windows into the snow below. Picture: Instagram/tycopee_ Source: Supplied

An icy winter storm has crippled much of the central and eastern United States with Boston targeted for yet more snow later this week. Jillian Kitchener reports.

AFTER four massive blizzards in just a month, the people of Boston are starting to lose it.

Things have gotten so bad, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh was forced to issue a statement.

"I'm asking people to stop their nonsense right now. These are adults jumping out windows," Walsh said, according to the Boston Herald. "It's a foolish thing to do and you could kill yourself."

Walsh was referring to the latest dangerous craze where Bostonians are jumping out of their windows into giant snowbanks and sharing the video online.

Boston, on America's East Coast, is buried under 96-inches (2.4 metres) of snow as yet another snowstorm last weekend raised snowfall totals to a nearly-record high.

With winds clocking 96km/h in some parts and temperatures dropping to -17C, locals are resorting to desperate (and dangerous) measures to stay entertained.

Since Sunday, videos of locals leaping from windows have continued to appear online with the hashtags #bostonblizzardchallenge and #bostonsnowchallenge.

The new craze has infuriated Boston's mayor, who found out about it from the Sunday night news.

"This isn't Loon Mountain, this is the city of Boston, where we're trying to remove snow off of the street and it becomes very dangerous," Walsh said.

"And the last thing we want to do is respond to an emergency call where somebody jumped out of the window because they thought it was a funny thing to do."

Bruce then continued on and hit the Prius.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident and as yet no charges have been laid.

TMZ reports that detectives have opened a vehicular homicide investigation. If any of the drivers in the crash are found criminally negligent they could spend six years in prison.

Jenner reportedly did pass a sobriety test after police arrived on the scene.

Food poisoning hits 4 million a year

The first case of hepatitis A has been confirmed in WA, believed to related to contaminated frozen berries.

FOOD poisoning affects four million Australians a year, results in 13 million missed working days and costs the economy over $1.2 billion a year.

The Hepatitis A outbreak connected with berries imported from China is only one of hundreds of types of illnesses you can contract from food.

Bacteria, viruses and parasites that can be hosted in food are behind most cases of food poisoning.

But chemicals added to food and high levels of some ingredients like iodine can also cause health problems.

The most common symptoms of food poisoning include fever, vomiting and diarrhoea but in rare cases it can cause cysts, paralysis, seizures, dementia and death.

Trichinosis, a parasitic infection caused by eating animals, commonly pigs, infected with the larvae of a worm will see immature worms travel through the arteries into the muscles and form cysts.

Botulism can cause paralysis and death and mad cow disease has symptoms of dementia, jerky movements and personality changes.

"There are 10 or 11 causes you really pay attention to but there are up to 200 illnesses you can get from food," Australian National University epidemiologist Associate Professor Martyn Kirk says.

Bad track record ... Chinese products have been involved in several recent food scares in Australia. Picture Thinkstock Source: ThinkStock

Chinese products have been involved in several recent food scares in Australia including the 2009 Bonsoy recall where over 600 Australians developed thyroid dysfunction caused by high iodine levels in the soy milk, Bonsoy.

In 2010 eight milk products were found to have high melamine levels, the testing occurred after increased incidence of kidney stones in infants in China linked to melamine in milk.

But other food scares have been local.

In 2008 six sushi samples were categorised as potentially hazardous due to elevated levels of Bacillus cereus and E. coli.

More than 140 people fell ill and 15 were admitted to hospital with salmonella poisoning after eating at the Copa Brazilian Churrasco in Dickson in May 2013 after being served raw egg in their mayonnaise.

Food Standards Australia checks also found locally grown strawberries were infected by salmonella and L monocytogenes and e cold in Australian grown sprouts and parsley.

COMMON CAUSES OF FOOD POISONING

. Bacillus is a bacteria commonly found in fried rice, starchy vegetables, meat products, cereal foods, sauces, puddings and spices it causes vomiting and diarrhoea that usually last around 24 hours.

. Campylobacter is found in raw and undercooked poultry, unpasteurised milk and contaminated water and causes fever, nausea, diarrhoea and cramps.

. Botulism found in honey, home canned vegetables and fruits, corn syrup, fermented fish has symptoms of lethargy, blurred vision, paralysis and death from respiratory failure if not treated quickly.

. Clostridium perfringens found in meats, poultry, gravy, dried and pre-cooked foods causes watery diarrhoea, cramps and nausea.

. E cold commonly found in undercooked beef, unpasteurised milk and juice, sprouts and contaminated water it causes diarrhoea and cramps.

You don't want this ... E cold commonly found in undercooked beef, unpasteurised milk and juice, sprouts and contaminated water it causes diarrhoea and cramps. Picture: Supplied. Source: ThinkStock

. Listeria found in soft cheeses, ready to eat deli meats and unpasteurised milk can cause meningitis, sepsis and fever.

. Salmonella is found in undercooked poultry, raw egg, mayonnaise, sprouts, tahini and causes headache, fever, cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting.

. Staphylococcus aureus is found in cream desserts and pastries and potato salad and causes vomiting and abdominal cramps.

. Norovirus transmitted when a person with the virus handles food causes fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea and headache.

. Trichinosis is a parasitic infection caused by eating animals, commonly pigs, infected with the larvae of a worm called trichinella. The worms mate in your intestines and the females lay eggs, which then develop into immature worms, that travel through the arteries into the muscles and form cysts.

. Mad cow disease which has killed more than 160 people in Britain causes dementia, memory loss, hallucinations and personality changes paired with physical changes such as jerky movements.

A cyclone sandwich bears down

Authorities in the Northern Territory are preparing for Cyclone Lam to hit Arnhem Land in the next 24 hours.

Could be a good time to get into the gumboot business. Source: NewsComAu

HERE'S the weather forecast for northern Australia: a high chance of chaos with an 85 per cent chance of get-me-the-hell-out-of-here for at least the next couple of days.

OK, so you won't find that on any official Bureau of Meteorology bulletin, but that's pretty much the outlook for the Top End of the Northern Territory and much of Queensland for the next few days.

An ominous satellite picture currently reveals a two-pronged threat. There's Tropical Cyclone Lam in the Timor Sea just off the NT's Gove Peninsula, and there's also Tropical Cyclone Marcia lurking in Queensland's Coral Sea, which looks likely to deliver severe flooding and worse.

It's not unusual to have two massive tropical storms within coo-ee of each other. But it's not exactly good, either. Source: NewsComAu

First things first: this is the worrying scene on the Gove Peninsula, where TC Lam is hovering dangerously close to the NT's fifth largest town of Nhulunbuy. Locals are already queueing for essentials and emergency shelters are open.

News.com.au spoke to an on-duty technician at Gove Airport, 13km southeast of Nhulunbuy, a weather station which is obscured by the blue rain swirl in this image. He told us that the weather has closed in with less than a kilometre of visibility, the wind is currently around 40 km/h and it's raining steadily, following 148mm in the last 24 hours.

Not a big storm, but definitely a bad storm. Source: bom.gov.au Source: NewsComAu

None of that is too severe by Top End wet season standards, but as Darwin Office meteorologist Adam Morgan explained, TC Lam is set to intensify. Tonight, it was upgraded to a Category 3.

For the record, Category 3 cyclones have winds of between 165 km/h and 224 km/h. Cyclones in this range are also technically known as "severe" cyclones.

BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES

HUNDREDS of people have taken shelter across the east coast of the Top End as severe tropical Cyclone Lam intensifies and shifts course, now charging directly towards Elcho Island and Milingimbi.

Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster Angeline Prasad said Cyclone Lam was expected to develop into category 4 intensity and make landfall "very close to Elcho Island" on Thursday evening.

The cyclone was situated about 140kms north of the Nhulunbuy Airport and 170kms north east of Elcho Island at 3pm on Wednesday.

"I would say (it will make landfall) between 9pm and midnight," Ms Prasad said.

"Destructive winds and gusts greater than 170km per hour are expected to affect Milingimbi and Elcho late on Thursday, that's where landfall is expected.

"The eye could possibly cross Elcho Island.

"Destructive winds may extend to Goulbourn Island and Cape Shield, including Nhulunbuy, during Thursday.

"Gales will possibly extend to Croker Island and Port Roper on Friday."

Ambulance officer Michael Tsang helps deliver emergency supplies to the cyclone shelter Nhulunbuy hospital. Source: News Corp Australia

Ms Prasad said Cyclone Lam could reach category 5 intensity.

"If it stays over water longer, and continues westward, conditions are very favourable for it to develop further, but because it is curving south west towards land (on Thursday) it may not have enough time to develop into a category 5," she said.

Ms Prasad said Cyclone Lam was a "small system" in terms of diameter but could pack a punch.

"The highest winds recorded were on Wednesday at Cape Wessel at 66 knots or 122km per hour, when it was in the eye wall of the tropical cyclone, that's hurricane force," she said.

"You tend to have the strongest winds in the eye wall."

Ms Prasad said Cyclone Lam may not cross directly over Nhulunbuy as originally expected but that the area would still be significantly affected.

"The eye of the cyclone might miss Nhulunbuy but there's a good chance it will get cyclonic winds affecting it (on Wednesday night and Thursday)."

A cyclone warning remained current between Goulbourn Island and Cape Shield, including Nhulunbuy, overnight on Wednesday.

A cyclone watch has been issued for Croker Island to Goulburn Island and Cape Shield to Port Roper, including Groote Eylandt and Bulman.

NT Emergency Services and police have advised people to stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.

"You need to avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current," Commander Porter said. "You need to stop children playing in or near flooded waters."

"In the event you need to create your own sandbags for flooding (in homes), use pillow cases, shopping bags or any other item that's capable of being filled by sand. "You need to be careful of falling powerlines in the event of gale force winds or destructive winds.

"With the current cyclonic conditions it's highly likely there will be fallen branches and other debris scattered across roads."

Nhulunbuy Police encourage residents in Ski Beach community to leave before the causeway becomes flooded, blocking them off from any emergency services. Source: News Corp Australia

Commander Porter said heavy rain over next 48 hours could result in weight restrictions on roads and road closures.

"Motorists are advised to check road reports prior to travelling at roadreport.nt.gov.au or ring 1800246199 to get current status of roads," he said.

"Please do not attempt to cross any flooded waterways as we don't want you to be a statistic in relation to this event.

"Residents who choose to relocate to other areas outside the warning or watch zones, please notify the police prior to your departure on 131444 so we know you've arrive safe."

And then there were two. Source: NewsComAu

As the above radar image and weather map shows, TC Lam is not a particularly large storm. But that's not an indication of its destructive potential. As Darwin Office meteorologist Adam Morgan explained, Cyclone Tracy wasn't big either, but it was super strong and it scored a bullseye hit on Darwin.

So how unusual is this set-up with two major cyclones on the Aussie weather map? (Or at least, one cyclone and one storm with the strong likelihood of becoming a cyclone).

"It's certainly not uncommon to have that. We do see it from time to time," Adam Morgan explains. "It depends where the monsoon trough is lying."

The monsoon trough, for those of you who tune out when weather guys start using jargon, is the dotted line you can see clearly on the above map linking the two systems we just mentioned.

It basically indicates the boundary between two distinct climatic zones and prevailing windflows. Any time you have converging winds, you tend to get instability. Which usually means storms. Which in summer in the tropics often means severe tropical storms, Which often means cyclones, especially when the water is warmer than the 27 degrees it needs to be to. Which it well and truly is right now.

With water temps currently as high as 30, the Timor Sea is ripe for cyclone formation. Source: NewsComAu

Ironically, the Queensland storm could deliver its most intense damage when it leaves the tropics. Here's the path it's expected to take.

Down she comes. Source: NewsComAu

South-east Queensland residents have been warned to brace for a hammering, with a category-two cyclone expected to cross the coast between Hervey Bay and St Lawrence early on Thursday.

Tropical Cyclone Marcia will bring floods, gales, a tidal surge and beach erosion after the big storm late yesterday took a swerve towards the coast at 22km/h.

CLOSING IN: Cyclone Marcia bears down on Queensland

WEATHER CENTRAL: Up-to-the-moment observations

Emergency services have kicked into action, with councils filling sandbags and closing beaches as the low loomed about 900km northeast of Bundaberg.

Seas approached 6m off Brisbane and wind gusts past 80km/h were recorded at Cape Moreton.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the state disaster management committee would meet today as she warned residents to prepare.

More than 200 swiftwater rescue crews were being positioned in areas likely to flood.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services commissioner Katarina Carroll said people should be ready to sustain themselves for a couple of days.

"This is a faster moving system so there will be a lot of rain in a shorter time frame," she said. "But the ground is not saturated and the rain hasn't been going on for a matter of weeks."

Ms Carroll said dams had the capacity to handle the heavy rain expected.

Residents can expect impacts similar to when ex-Cyclone Oswald roughed up much of the Queensland coast in 2013, but without such brutal flooding.

Oswald swamped Bundaberg and Gympie and scared the pants off Brisbane residents who feared a repeat of the 2011 inundation.

Weather bureau forecaster Jess Carey said rainfall would range from 200mm to 400mm, with falls of more than 500mm likely in some places.

"Rainfall will kick off (today) in the Wide Bay Burnett and then extend right into southeast Queensland overnight and on Friday," Mr Carey said.

"We've already seen what a low like Oswald is capable of."

Mr Carey said Oswald flooded wide areas because it was slow moving and rain had preceded it, soaking catchments.

"This low will move more quickly and most of the significant weather will be done by Saturday," he said.

"We're looking at 24 to 36 hours of rain and the ground this time is not so wet but there will still be plenty of run-off."

CHANCE OF THEM MERGING 'UNLIKELY'

TC Lam is expected to reach a category four by Thursday morning and make landfall between Elcho Island and Nhulunbuy overnight.

If it does, it'll become the first cyclone to cross the Australian coastline this season, marking an unusually late start.

Bureau of Meteorology records show that in the last 50 years only two other cyclone seasons have gotten underway later than they have this year.

The system began as a tropical low within the monsoon trough over the Coral Sea late last week.

A similar cyclone is lurking off Queensland's coast, northeast of Bundaberg.

The BOM is warning some places could get 30cm of rain over 24 hours, on both Thursday and Friday.

Destructive winds between 90 and 125km/h are also predicted for some areas, with the potential for abnormally high tides and heavy rain to cause flooding.

The BOM says the forecast tracks of the two systems indicate they will not merge.

Last year, Tropical Cyclone Dylan and Fletcher made landfall within a few days of each other late January-early February in Queensland.

To date, there have only been two tropical cyclones in the Australian region this season, which runs from from November 1 to April 30, but neither came close to the mainland coast.

The last time the country saw such a late first crossing was in 1987-88, when Cyclone Charlie struck near Townsville on February 29.

Berry eaters face seven-week wait

Contaminated ... berry eaters face up to seven more weeks of uncertainty before they find out whether they're infected. Picture: Supplied Source: Getty Images

Raspberries appear to be the link in a hepatitis A scare in which nine Australians have tested positive.

BERRY eaters face up to seven more weeks of uncertainty to see if they'll contract Hepatitis A.

Australia's chief medical officer Chris Baggoley estimates one in 100 people who ate the contaminated, imported frozen berries will contract the disease.

But the extent to which they're affected could vary from showing no symptoms to being ill for several weeks.

The average incubation period for Hepatitis A is four weeks but it could take as long as seven weeks to show up.

"If someone has consumed the berries and they are well, seven weeks after that consumption they'll certainly be fine," Professor Baggoley told reporters in Canberra.

By Wednesday afternoon, 13 people in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Western Australia had the virus after eating the Nanna's and Creative Gourmet brands of imported frozen mixed berries.

Parent company Patties Foods has recalled four products.

WA health authorities expect to see more hepatitis A infections after the state's first case was confirmed on Wednesday.

Children at nine SA primary schools and child care centres may have been served frozen berries from the recalled batches.

And students at a Victorian high school also ate the berries after making smoothies during a cooking class.

None has tested positive for the virus.

Three Wests Tigers NRL players are reportedly having tests after eating the fruit.

Wests Tigers are confident no player has hepatitis A despite fears three players ate contaminated berries.

WA communicable disease control director Paul Armstrong said there was no need for people who ate the berries and remained well to be tested.

Professor Baggoley said a definitive link between all the cases should be confirmed via special blood tests later this week.

He noted Hepatitis A was a relatively common disease, with about 20 cases reported each month although not usually all linked as with this outbreak.

The federal government is considering toughening import screening procedures following the scare. But Prime Minister Tony Abbott said companies also had to lift their game.

"The bottom line is that companies shouldn't be poisoning their customers," Mr Abbott said.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand chief executive Steve McCutcheon said all food sold in Australia, whether imported or produced here, had to meet the same standards.

"At a domestic level there is not an awful lot of testing done," he said in Canberra.

"There is some testing done at the border."

Recalled ... a health warning has been issued for 1kg packets of Nanna's Frozen Mixed Berries. Picture: Brendan Francis Source: News Corp Australia

Patties Foods is examining its supply chain to work out exactly where the problem was, Mr McCutcheon said.

It was too early to know whether Australian inspectors should be sent to China.

The government will review any areas such as biosecurity, quarantine or import-export policy that need examining.

Farmers want an overhaul of labelling to help consumers identify Australian grown and packaged food.

But Mr Abbott said more red tape and regulation of the private sector could lead to soaring food costs and there was a balancing act between safe products and a fair price.

Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce urged consumers to buy Australian produce.

"I want to make sure I do everything in my power to say to people: your safest food is your domestic food. That is why you pay a premium for Australian product. It is clean, green and healthy," he said.

Afroman punches female fan on stage

THIS time, he didn't get high. He got booked.

One-hit wonder Afroman, aka Joseph Foreman, has been charged with assault after punching a female fan in the face — and the footage isn't pretty.

Foreman was performing at a post-mardi gras parade show in Biloxo, Mississippi, when the fan gatecrashes the stage, drink in hand.

As she begins to bump and grind against Foreman, he snaps and slugs her in the face, knocking her to the ground.

He plays on as the disoriented gatecrasher, who TMZ reports was "bleeding and crying", gets up and wobbles off stage.

It's also reported the singer continued to perform "until the house lights came on and the music stopped".

Foreman was arrested outside the venue.

Reports indicate that immediately after the incident the victim made a citizen's arrest against the entertainer, who was formally charged by police on a misdemeanour simple assault. The unidentified woman later filed an affidavit against the forty-year-old.

Yet Foreman's rep noted security has been an ongoing issue at his concerts, with a number of fans gatecrashing the stage on previous tours.

"This was a completely involuntary reflex reaction to people infringing on his stage space," his rep said told Billboard.

"It was uncharacteristic behaviour that was initiated by outside uncontrolled forces."

Foreman was released from jail after posting a $330 bond.

"Afroman was about five songs into his set when the incident occurred," Chase Taylor, who owns the venue where the incident took place, told WLOX News.

"We pulled the plug on him, and security met him at the bottom of the stage to escort him outside, where he was taken into custody.

"Kress Live does not condone this type of behaviour. We like to keep a safe environment, and we addressed the situation the best way we could."

Foreman gave authorities "no problem whatsoever" while incarcerated, said Biloxi's police chief.

In even more shocking news, Afroman's song Because I Got High was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance in 2002.

Obama: It’s time for war on ISIS

Wants war ... US President Barack Obama has proposed military action against ISIS. Picture: AP Source: AP

US President Barack Obama has sent legislation to Congress to formally authorise war against Islamic State militants.

The president, elected on a promise to end America's wars, is sending Congress a proposed joint resolution to authorise military force against the swift rise of IS extremists, who are imposing violent rule across Iraq and Syria and have brazenly killed US and allied hostages in brutal online propaganda videos.

MUELLER: IS sent parents pic of dead daughter

ON THE RUN: ISIS leader scared for his life

In a five-paragraph letter to politicians accompanying the three-page draft resolution provided to The Associated Press, Mr Obama said IS "poses a threat to the people and stability of Iraq, Syria and the broader Middle East and to US national security."

Killed ... Islamic State hostage Kayla Mueller was held captive and killed. Picture: AFP/Arizona Courier/Matt Hinshaw Source: AFP

"It threatens American personnel and facilities located in the region and is responsible for the deaths of US citizens James Foley, Steven Sotloff, Abdul-Rahman Peter Kassig and Kayla Mueller," Mr Obama said, listing the American hostages who died in IS custody.

"If left unchecked, ISIL will pose a threat beyond the Middle East, including to the United States homeland."

Mr Obama plans to speak on his request from the White House on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Obama's proposal launches an ideological debate over what authorities and limitations the president should have in pursuit of the extremists, with the shadow of lost American lives hanging over its fate.

The proposal si the first time a president has sought congressional approval to go to war since politicians voted in 2002 to authorise George W. Bush's plan to invade Iraq.

Mr Obama has however said the proposal would avoid a large scale invasion and occupation.

House Speaker, Republican John Boehner, said he had concerns about voting for a war that limits the military from implementing an appropriate and effective strategy.

"Any authorisation for the use of military force must give our military commanders the flexibility and authorities they need to succeed and protect our people," he said. 'I have concersn that the president's request does not meet this standard."

Democrat Adam B. Schiff of California, the lead on the House Intelligence Committee, said he worried that the president's proposal set no geographic limits to the military campaign.

Confirmation of the death of 26-year-old humanitarian worker Mueller on the eve of Mr Obama's proposal added new urgency, while the costly long-running wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were a caution to some politicians against yet another protracted military campaign.

Mr Obama is offering to limit authorisation to three years, extending to the next president the powers and the debate over renewal for what he envisions as a long-range battle.

He is proposing no geographic limitations where US forces could pursue the elusive militants. The authorisation covers the IS and "associated persons or forces", defined as those fighting on behalf of or alongside IS "or any closely-related successor entity in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners."

Mr Obama's resolution would repeal a 2002 authorisation for force in Iraq but maintain a 2001 authorisation against al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, although Mr Obama said in his letter to politicians his goal is to refine and ultimately repeal that authorisation as well.

Mr Obama's proposal bans "enduring offensive combat operations," a novel term in military force authorisations. Its ambiguity is designed to bridge the divide between politicians opposed to ground troops and those who say the commander in chief should maintain the option.

Mr Obama said his draft would not authorise long-term, large-scale ground combat operations like those deployed in the past to Iraq and Afghanistan, arguing those battles should be left to local forces instead of the US military.

Destruction ... a Free Syrian Army fighter from Shams al-Shamal heads to the front line in Kobane after pushing out Islamic State militants. Picture: AP Photo/Jake Simkin Source: AP

"The authorisation I propose would provide the flexibility to conduct ground combat operations in other more limited circumstances, such as rescue operations involving US or coalition personnel or the use of special operations forces to take military action against ISIL leadership," Obama said, using an acronym for the group.

Sen. Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he appreciated the president seeking the authorisation and would quickly begin holding "rigorous hearings" on the White House request.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the provision would allow special operations missions, such as potential raids targeting IS leaders and the failed attempt last summer to rescue Mueller and other hostages held by the group.

Mr Obama's draft resolution opens with a list of declarations against IS's "depraved, violent, and oppressive ideology," including its seizure of significant territory in Iraq and Syria, its intention and capability to expand its reach, mass killings of Muslims who don't subscribe to its beliefs, genocide against other religious groups and violence against women.

Strikes ... Emirati pilots at an air base in Jordan after the UAE launched air strikes targeting the Islamic State group. Picture: AP Photo/WAM Source: AP

Mr Obama argues the congressional authorisations President George W. Bush used to justify military action after 9/11 are sufficient for him to deploy more than 2700 US troops to train and assist Iraqi security forces and conduct ongoing air strikes against targets in Iraq and Syria. Critics have said Mr Obama is overstepping outdated authorities to target the new threat from militants imposing a violent form of Sharia law in pursuit of the establishment of an Islamic state.

Presidential aides have consulted privately with politicians from both parties ahead of unveiling the plan publicly in hopes of lining up support, despite the political divisions that have deadlocked Washington in Obama's second term.

War ... fighters shoot a machine gun toward the position of the Islamic State group on the outskirts of Kobane. Picture: AP Photo/Vadim Ghirda Source: AP

In anticipation of debate and attempts to amend the resolution, Mr Earnest called the offer a "starting point for conversations to take place."

Mr Earnest said the language limiting ground troops was designed not just for domestic political considerations, but to take in the viewpoint of leaders in Iraq and members of the US-Arab coalition targeting IS uncomfortable with the idea of a large deployment of US forces.

He also said the lack of geographic limitations will allow pursuit of the extremists beyond the borders of Iraq and Syria.

So is all the heavy breathing hype gusting around this adaptation of the E.L. James-penned erotic blockbuster in any way justified?

Kind of. Let's put it like this: it is totally trashy, but in no way absolute garbage.

For the most part, the initial screen incarnation of Fifty Shades is a sedately salacious affair.

Anyone expecting a prurient pushing of the envelope is bound to be disappointed. At its most risque, this movie will only go as far as suggestively licking the stamps.

Then again, rabid readers of James' bones-jumping, bum-thwacking books probably already knew the filmmakers would go soft with the harder stuff.

Steamy ... Fifty Shades of Grey is trashy but not garbage. Picture: Universal Source: Supplied

Nevertheless, this Fifty Shades takes some conspicuously wide swerves around the pervier inclinations of the book. So much so that newcomers to the 50SOG cult will have cause to wonder what all the fuss is about.

There ain't much happening on the story front here, which actually does end up working in the movie's favour, funnily enough.

All that has to be covered in the need-to-know department is that naive young college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) is on a carnal collision course with a slightly older, much richer dude named Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan).

50 SHADES: What is the verdict?

Kinky ... Christian Grey introduces Anastasia Steele to bondage and other alternative pursuits. Picture: Supplies Source: Supplied

Inexperienced as she is, Anastasia can sense there is more to the mysterious Mr Grey — who must have a shedload of money, because he has a helicopter with his surname stencilled on the side — than first meets her untrained eye.

Turns out Christian is quite the bondage-and-discipline enthusiast (among, err, other 'alternative' pursuits that aren't quite printable here).

So if there is to be some kind of relationship in the offing, certain bedroom boundaries will need to be set. Or crossed. Or erased.

Who really knows? Or even cares? (Yes, I can hear you: just get to the sex business already. Let's go there then.)

When it comes to talking the tawdry talk, the Christian-Anastasia thing works a treat.

Perhaps the most efficient (even endearing) aspect of 50SOG is that it features two people speaking frankly about a sexual relationship.

Not just what they will and won't do (though the notorious 'terms of agreement' material from the book is very much to the fore in the film). But also what they wish to gain from all that pleasure and pain.

This is a rarity for a Hollywood film, and a refreshing one at that.

But hey, let's not get too carried away, because often in Fifty Shades of Grey, the intentionally sensual can become unintentionally funny in seconds flat.

It doesn't help at all that many of the fleshier escapades are shot like a next-gen 9-1/2 Weeks. (The sudden brandishing of a single peacock feather during one encounter might be the most anti-aphrodisiac image committed to film in 2015.)

Chemistry ... Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) is on a carnal collision course with Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). Picture: Universal Source: Supplied

50SOG aficionados will be happy enough with a handful of extended exploratory trips inside Christian's hallowed horn-dog HQ: the infamous 'Red Room of Pain.'

Yes, it does loos a bit like a sex dungeon designed by Ikea (with the addition of a few ropes and cable-ties from Bunnings). But it does the biz as a place for Christian and Ana to do their biz.

What about the performances? Well, it must be said both of the relatively inexperienced leads cope quite serviceably with the obligatory tasks of titillation they've been given.

For Johnson, that means spending an inordinate amount of screen time blindfolded, breathless and boobs out.

Dornan's job is to be buff, bossy and behind a bulge in his trousers whenever possible.

However, as silly as they can be sometimes made to look, the couple do share a credible sexual chemistry on-screen that saves many a steamy scene from expiring due to premature evaporation.

Anything else that needs to be put on record about 50 Shades of Grey right now?

Laughing all the way to the bank ... E.L. James made sure her readers would be happy with the movie. Picture: Charles Sykes/Invision/AP Source: AP

Well, at a running time of just over two hours, it probably outstays its welcome by 15 minutes or so.

With one or two minor exceptions, the music score is bland, intrusive and about as erotic as Katy Perry's Roar played on a kazoo.

The ending is a little bit of a baffler: not so much a cliffhanger as a swift zipper-upperer. No major harm done though. After all, there's at least two more 50SOG sequels to come.

Overall, no-one's going to be needing a cold shower after this. However, half a glass of something beforehand in the company of like-minded friends is definitely recommended.

Bali Nine duo ‘turned my life around’

CAHYA Xander was just 17 when he landed in Bali's Kerobokan jail.

Sentenced to six months for eight grams of marijuana he was put into the adult section with hardened criminals.

It was two men he had never met who came to help him — Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

He is out now and so indebted does he feel toward the two Australians that he has set up a group called Youth Against the Death Penalty and yesterday in Bali began shooting a video clip to campaign for their lives.

Chan and Sukumaran took him under their wing, protected him and helped him in 2009, when he was sent to jail and now he is trying to help them in their darkest hours.

Mr Xander still visits the jail to see his mentors.

As the video clip was being shot, Mr Xander told how much good work Chan and Sukumaran are doing inside the jail to train and educate and help other prisoners.

"They are helping so many people, they are helping people stop taking drugs," he said.

And despite being on death row now for almost nine years, he said the Australians were always optimistic.

"Every single day they wake up and treated every day like it was the best day of their lives, they were very positive," he said.

"When I was 17 they were real role models," he said. They told him he would be free soon and to do something good with his life and not come back to jail.

"(The President) should come to the prison and see how they are making people's lives better. "

Dayu Alit is another former prisoner in the video. The 20-year-old first started learning painting in the jail, where she was serving a sentence, under the tutelage of Sukumaran.

"For Andrew and Myuran, the penalty is not appropriate. They have already changed. They changed not for themselves, but they have helped many people, helped other people," Ms Alit said.

"They have changed. The government should give them chance to get mercy," she said.

Ana Adriana, 55, another former prisoner, said that without Chan and Sukumaran he would not be the way he is. She was afforded so much opportunity for the future as a result of the educational courses they ran.

"Both Myuran and Andrew have given a lot of things for us. If not because of them, we will not be like we are now. They have given much education for our future," she said.

"They do not deserve to get the death sentence."

She said Sukumaran hated drugs and people who used drugs.

The video campaign, being shot in both English and Indonesian, aims to raise local awareness of the plight of Chan and Sukumaran and to illustrate the rehabilitation work they have undertaken in jail and the Indonesian prisoners they have helped.

It comes as the Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, again reiterated his no mercy policy when it comes to drugs and the Bali Nine lawyers lodged a new lawsuit in the State Administrative Court in Jakarta against the President.

The Attorney General however says the legal challenge will not halt the impending executions of the two Australians and six others, of whom have been denied clemency.

No date has been set.

What were Palmer and Pyne doing at dinner?

EDUCATION Minister Christopher Pyne's university reforms look set to fail in the Senate partly because of a lack of backing from Clive Palmer's party, so maybe that's what they and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann were chatting about over dinner in Canberra.

Or maybe they were just hungry.

The two Liberals and the billionaire head of the Palmer United Party shared a Wednesday night meal as crossbenchers look to side with Labor to delay the Coaltion's controversial plans for higher education.

A motion by opposition higher education spokesman Kim Carr for a five-week inquiry attracted support from the Greens, independents Nick Xenophon and Jacqui Lambie, Motoring Enthusiast senator Ricky Muir, and Palmer United Party Senate leader Glenn Lazarus.

The support from senators Xenophon and Muir in particular is significant because the government is wooing them as it makes a second attempt to pass its reforms.

Senator Muir sided with the government to continue debate on the changes in December, when they were defeated.

And then there's the Adelaide radio due Mr Pyne probably wouldn't have dinner with — listen to the awkward audio

Senator Carr said the pair's position had been misunderstood for some time.

Mr Pyne said he would not give a running commentary on negotiations and he was unfazed about the latest committee inquiry.

The second version of the government's package is being debated in the House of Representatives.

It's unlikely to get to the Senate before March. The inquiry will report on March 17.

Mr Palmer told the lower house on Wednesday the Coalition's campaign to pass the reforms in the face of clear opposition was arrogant.

"Only an idiot expects to get a different outcome from repeatedly doing the same thing," he said.

Deputy Greens leader Adam Bandt followed a similar line, saying that "for an education minister, Christopher Pyne is a pretty slow learner".

Secret buildings you can’t visit

Russia's Federal Security Service is housed in this building in Moscow. Source: Getty Images

EVER wondered where spies go to work? These buildings hide the biggest network of intelligence agencies around the world. Some are nondescript, others are imposing and a few we couldn't find photos of at all. You may recognise some from Bond movies, while others look more like the house next door. These are the world's most powerful buildings as reported in Gizmodo plus a few of our own.

Government Communications Headquarters, UK

The Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) is one of the three main UK security and intelligence organisations. Responsible for identifying threats to national security, their work includes surveillance regarding cyber attacks, international and domestic terrorism, organised crime and the spread of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.

In 2004 GCHQ moved to new premises in the spa town of Cheltenham, in the southwest of England. Dubbed the "doughnut" because of its shape, an internal street links all areas of the building meaning that no one is more than a five-minute walk away.

MI5, UK

Located in central London, the Security Service MI5 is the UK's domestic counterintelligence and security agency. More than one hundred years old, it has played a hugely secret role in countering the activities of terrorists and spies.

MI6, UK

The UK's Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) is more commonly known as MI6 (Military Intelligence, Section 6), and is responsible for supplying the British Government with foreign intelligence.

Sitting on the Thames in London it is known by locals as "legoland" and "Babylon-on-Thames" it has also featured in Bond movies.

As the "secret front line" of Britain's's national security, it gathers foreign intelligence from around the world that may affect the UK's political and economic interests. Although more than a century old, its existence was not officially acknowledged until 1994 when it moved to its present location.

Communications Security Establishment, Canada

The Communications Security Establishment (CSE) is the national cryptologic agency of Canada. Based in Ottawa, it is one of the key security and intelligence organisations, it is responsible for foreign signals intelligence (SIGINT) and protecting Canadian government electronic information and communication networks.

Central Intelligence Agency, USA

Probably the world's biggest intelligence agency and famous from many Hollywood blockbusters, the CIA is responsible for homeland security in the USA.

Based in Langley, Virginia, the CIA has three main roles — to gather information about foreign governments, corporations an individuals; to provide national security intelligence assessments to US policymakers; and to carry out covert activities upon the request of the President.

National Security Agency, USA

Unlike the CIA which is responsible for human source intelligence, the National Security Agencey (NSA) is the United States intelligence agency for information and data.

Known as Signals intelligence (SIGINT), the NSA monitors, collects, decodes and translates information.

In 2013 its powerful secret surveillance programs were made public by Edward Snowden who exposed documents revealing it intercepts communications of over a billion people worldwide and able to undertake cyber attacks on the internet.

Australia's Secret Intelligence Service

Australia's Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS), collects and distributes secret intelligence about developments around the world, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, that may impact Australia's interests and the security of its people.

For over twenty years, the existence of ASIS remained a secret, even from members of the Australian Government. The Service was first referred to in Parliament in 1975 and was not publicly acknowledged until 1977.
