FORGET keys in a salad bowl, Silicon Valley swingers are using hi-tech apps and websites to swap sex partners.

Entrepreneur Ben Fuller has created modern technology to lure wealthy San Francisco professionals to "lifestyle parties" where couples mingle, dance and even have sex.

Mr Fuller started throwing the Bronze Party in 2011, in which more than 1300 registered members use apps such as Secret and Auto Date to RSVP and see who is attending.

"In the old days, you never knew where you were going," Mr Fuller told CNN Money.

"Now you get a really good sense. The event details ... even the pictures of the people that are going to be attending the party.

"(It) allows you into the party itself, to choose the people that you're interested in, and if you choose and they choose, you get a notification."

Mr Fuller and a colleague also run Modern Lifestyle, an online platform that connects about 50 sex clubs around America and enables customers to see who is attending. More than $US3 million in tickets were sold last year.

The businessman said his discreet events are attended by white collar workers such as lawyers, engineers and IT professionals who earn more than $US100,000 a year.

For married couple Stella and Greg, partner swapping keeps their relationship exciting.

The engineers have been together for 10 years and attended sex parties for at least two.

"Whereas you might go to a bar, pick up somebody and take them home for the evening if you're single, here it wouldn't be unheard of to do that even if you're married," Greg told CNN Money.

The kinky couple said an evening at the Bronze Party was just like a typical night out.

Back in the 1970s, couples were known to throw "key parties."

Men would toss their keys into a bowl and their wives would go home with the male guest whose keys she randomly picked out.

Swingers clubs and even swingers cruises are becoming increasingly popular for couples and singletons looking for a good time.

Participants usually have to pay a fee and some parties ban single men from attending.

Family horror: Three ‘hacked to death’

Pictured on a family holiday are parents Martin and Teresa van Breda with their daughter Marli, 16, and sons Henri, 20, and Rudi, 22. Picture: Facebook Source: Facebook

THREE members of a former Perth family have been found "hacked to death" in their South African home.

A fourth family member has been critically injured and a fifth has reportedly been taken away by the police.

Businessman Martin van Breda, 54, his wife Teresa, 55, and their son Rudi, 22, were found dead in their home in an exclusive golf-course estate home at Stellenbosch, near Cape Town, yesterday morning, local time.

The couple's daughter Marli, 16, is in a critical but stable condition with serious head injuries and their 20-year-old son Henri is assisting police and being questioned, South African media are reporting.

Police spokesman Andre Traut said no arrests have been made at this stage.

Emergency medical services spokesman Robert Daniels said it appeared the victims had been killed with an axe.

"What I can say is they were not shot, the patients were axed. The daughter was rushed to hospital with severe head trauma and a severed jugular," Mr Daniels told Cape Times. "The other son had minor bruises on his arms. He was treated at the scene."

News24 reported Marli is a year 11 student at Somerset College. The school's headmistress, Meg Fargher, said Marli started at the school last year and her parents were very involved in college activities.

"She's a lovely, popular, clever girl," Ms Fargher said.

Marli's boyfriend is also a student at the school.

The family were originally from South Africa but had lived in Claremont for about six years. They returned to South Africa in June last year.

Their son Rudi reportedly attended Scotch College in Victoria

Family friend Alexander Boshoff, 19, said the community was shaken by the news.

"Our families often spent holidays together. We have known each other for years. Martin was one of my dad's business partners at Curro Holdings," he told Cape Times. "They moved around a lot because of Martin's business, but Henri and Rudi never really complained. They were like a perfect family."

Curro Holdings owns a number of private schools in South Africa.

A close friend, who didn't want to be named, told News 24 the van Bredas were a "stunning family".

"I'm just shocked, I can't believe it," she said, adding that she had spent time with the family a few days ago.

She said Mr van Breda was calm and quiet, while his wife was excited about doing a cooking course in Italy.

The estate's homeowners association said there had been no breach of security at the estate.

"We wish to report that there was no breach of our security and we believe it was an isolated incident, confined to the scene of the crime," De Zalze homeowners' association chairman Eben Potgieter said.

Timomatic changes his name

Timomatic is the latest celebrity to change his name. Source: News Corp Australia

TIMOMATIC is leaving his stage name behind and returning to his birth name, Tim Omaji.

The Nigerian-born Aussie singer-songwriter chatted to Nova's Fitzy and Wippa on air on Wednesday morning and declared that 'Timomatic' is no more.

Omaji, who rose to fame as a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance in 2009, recently split with his girlfriend, dancer Talia Fowler, and is heading in a new direction with his music career.

The radio duo decided to have some fun with the 27-year-old Parachute singer and called him pretending to be merch reps from Sony. They threw some classic ideas at him to promote the name change.

Omaji isn't the first Aussie celebrity to change his name — TV personality Andrew G confused a whole lotta fans in 2013 when he made the switch to Osher Günsberg. This was his third name change. We first we knew him as Andy G, he then became Andrew G, followed a few years later by Andrew Gunsberg before Osher came about.

The Bachelor host later revealed on his blog how a spiritual awakening while travelling through Israel led to his most recent rebranding.

‘Wear the push up bra I bought’

Keeping it simple. Source: Instagram

WE'RE all guilty of having a chuckle or two at our parent's expense when they text us, but chances are they're nothing compared to the texts sent by Kate Siegel's mum.

The 26-year-old has decided to make the most of her mother's musings and advice, setting up the Instagram account 'Crazy Jewish Mom', which has just hit 170,000 followers.

The account is amusing to say the least — for example, for Siegel's birthday, she received this text: "Welcome to the wrong side of 25. The expiration date on your eggs is officially in sight. Tick Tock."

Then when her mum didn't like her outfit, she texted this: "Go shower and put on some eyeliner. Ur boyfriend is here! Oy. Is this how u dress with Superjew at your apt? I'm gonna burn those sweat pants. And wear the push up bra I bought u."

And she doesn't hold back on her advice: "Reminder, exercise ur calf muscles every other day. Unless u want to end up with cankles. It runs in the family. On your Father's side."

Siegel told Buzzfeed that "My mother knows I'm posting, but she's terrible at the internet, so I don't think she fully understands how often and the scope. That said, she LOVES it. She thinks it's all fantastic advice, stands by every word, and is happy that others are benefiting from her wisdom."

"My mother, as pushy as she can be, wants nothing but the best for me," she admitted to told The Huffington Post. "I wouldn't be where I am today without her support and guidance, and I love her very much. I just hope I'm not turning into her."

Here are more of her gems:

Zombie cat ‘rises from the dead’

Zombie cat ... Bart's owners say he clawed his way out of a grave. Picture: Humane Society Source: Supplied

PET Sematary is real, it seems.

Bart the cat was hit by a car and buried. Five days later, he rose from the dead.

Bart's owner, Ellis Hutson, said he found the cat two weeks ago in the middle of a Florida road, lifeless in a pool of blood.

The 52-year-old asked his friend to help bury Bart because he was so distraught.

"We were so close, I couldn't stand to bury him," Mr Hutson told ABC News in the US. "I put him on the shoulder of the road and went and got David. He dug a hole and covered up the cat with dirt. I witnessed him bury the cat."

But five days later, Bart turned up in a neighbour's yard with a broken jaw and ruptured eye.

"I open the door and my neighbour's standing there with the cat in her hand," Mr Hutson said. "She said, 'Bart is not dead.' I said, 'That's impossible. We buried Bart.'"

Neighbour Dusty Albritton said she was shocked to see Bart in her yard, looking for food.

"At first it blew me away", Ms Albritton said. "All I knew was this cat was dead and 'Pet Sematary' is real," she continued, referring to Stephen King's famous horror novel.

It is not clear how the "zombie cat" escaped his muddy grave, but some reports claim he clawed his way out.

Mr Huston said his nearly two-year-old feline suffered head trauma, a broken jaw and a damaged eye which will never work again.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, which is caring for "Bart the Miracle Cat", say they have never seen anything like it.

Bart had surgery on Tuesday night to remove his ruined eye and treat his jaw, and is now "resting comfortably" according to the society's Facebook page.

Ms Albritton has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money to cover Bart's medical expenses. More than $US3600 has been donated.

Scorchers win BBL title on final ball

The Perth Scorchers have claimed back-to-back BBL titles with a thrilling 4-wicket victory over the Sydney Sixers.

IT was so close to being a fairytale ending for Brett Lee, but it was the Perth Scorchers who claimed back-to-back Big Bash titles with a thrilling four-wicket win over the Sydney Sixers.

Chasing 148 for victory at Manuka Oval in Canberra, Shaun Marsh hit a memorable 73 from 59 deliveries but, as Big Bash games tend to do, this one went down to the wire.

Lee was left to bowl the final over — of the game and his career — with the Scorchers needing just eight runs to win off it.

Incredibly, the former Test quick struck to bowl Nathan Coulter-Nile with a magnificent delivery and then dismissed Sam Whiteman with the next ball.

The Scorchers needed one run to win and Lee was on a hat trick, but Yasir Arafat survived it and scrambled through for the single.

It was a lucky run, but an appropriately breathtaking way to end of the fourth edition of the BBL

If it was a difficult batting wicket, watching Marsh and Michael Klinger cruise to an opening wicket partnership of 70 you'd never know it.

Brett Lee has finished his cricketing career with an unbelievable final over which had a little bit of everything.

It was easy as you like, until the retiring hero Brett Lee finally made the breakthrough. Playing in his last ever match, Lee had Klinger caught by Sean Abbott for 33.

It was his 11th wicket of the season and he would go on to take two more, his highest tally of any Big Bash tournament. Not a bad way to sign off.

And just in case there were any lingering thoughts of Lee making another comeback, he has already ruled out taking part in the Champions League.

Earlier, Henriques played a gutsy captain's knock to help the Sixers to a competitive total of 4-147 on what appeared to be a very difficult batting wicket.

He showed tremendous patience as he hit an unbeaten 77 from 57 balls — his highest ever Big Bash score, and what a time for it.

Not only did Henriques' fine form in the Big Bash earn him a call up to the national team — which saw him miss the thrilling Sydney derby — but he has been widely praised for his leadership throughout the season.

The Sixers managed just two sixes in their innings, both hit by Henriques at the very end, which was probably a fair indication of how challenging the Manuka Oval pitch was.

The skipper was excellently supported by Ryan Carters (35 from 25 balls) at the other end and the two formed a crucial, unbeaten 98-run partnership, 94 of which we scored in the last 10 overs.

It was an excellent recovery given the strife the Sixers found themselves in early on.

Both openers, Michael Lumb and Riki Wessels, were bowled cheaply following a blistering start from the Scorchers bowlers.

Moises Henriques scored 77 from 57 balls. Photo by Matt King Source: Getty Images

Jason Behrendorff, the domestic player of the year, and Nathan Coulter-Nile caused carnage upfront, Behrendorff bowling Wessels to claim his 15th wicket of the tournament.

Nic Maddinson (19 from 22 balls) was undone by a Yasir Arafat yorker and when Jordan Silk was clean-bowled by the veteran Brad Hogg a short while later the Sixers were wilting on 4/53 after 10 overs.

But no more wickets fell after that as Henriques and Carters staged an impressive comeback.

It's just a shame more fans didn't get to see the Big Bash finale live.

Because the World Cup is just around the corner, the ICC require a lockout period and Cricket Australia couldn't guarantee each team would have the use of their stadium.

That's why a neutral venue was picked to host the final and to be fair it was packed to capacity.

Aussie jihadists killed as Kobane falls

Kurdish militia have driven the Islamic State group from the Syrian town of Kobane and raised their flags.

KURDISH flags are now flying over Kobane after Kurdish fighters finally drove out ISIS jihadists from the Syrian border town in a major strategic victory.

Observers say ISIS lost nearly 1200 fighters in the battle, of a total of 1800 killed, despite outgunning the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) with sophisticated weaponry captured from Iraqi and Syrian military bases.

The combat also sparked a mass exodus of local residents, with some 200,000 fleeing across the border into Turkey.

The US official said that many foreign fighters — including Australians, Belgians, Canadians and Chechens — were among the dead jihadists, but declined to give exact figures other than to say "it was hugely, hugely significant."

Despite the apparent victory, smoke filled the air above Kobane and Turkish security forces continued to block the Syrian-Turkish border.

Clashes broke out when a number of people attempted to enter the city following news of the victory. The Turkish border forces fired tear gas and used water cannons to dispel the crowd. The tension reportedly decreased following a call from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) for the crowd to retreat from the border.

Kurdish forces recaptured the town on the Turkish frontier from the Islamic State group on Monday in a symbolic blow for the jihadists who have seized swathes of territory in their brutal onslaught across Syria and Iraq.

Fight goes on ... Despite the apparent victory, smoke filled the air above Kobane and Turkish security forces continued to block the Syrian-Turkish border. Picture: Russia Today Source: Supplied

After more than four months of fighting, the streets — now patrolled by Kurdish militiamen with barely a civilian in sight — were a mass of rubble and gutted buildings, the journalists said.

Kurdish fighters armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles greeted the journalists with a hail of celebratory gunshots into the air and made the "V" for victory sign.

In one street, a mortar shell lay on the pockmarked tarmac. In another, a bright yellow car was left abandoned in the rubble, riddled with bullet holes, as a couple of men walked by to inspect the damage.

On Tuesday, Kurdish forces battled IS militants in villages around Kobane, warning that the fight against the jihadists was far from over.

The recapture of Kobane appeared however to be a major step in the campaign against the IS militants who had seemed poised to seize the town after they began their advance in September.

But analysts said air strikes by the US-led coalition had been key to the YPG's success, taking out some of the jihadists' heavier weaponry and hitting their supply routes.

A minister in the regional Kobane government said Tuesday that at least half of the town had been destroyed.

The YPG had announced the "liberation" of Kobane on Monday, depriving the IS group of a prize to add to its territory in Syria and Iraq.

"Our forces fulfilled the promise of victory," the militia said, but cautioned that fighting was not over yet.

The United States had said on Tuesday that Kurdish fighters were in control of about 90 per cent of the town.

"ISIL is now, whether on order or whether they are breaking ranks, beginning to withdraw from the town," a senior State Department official told reporters.

But he warned that the militants, also known as ISIL, were "adaptive and resilient" and no-one was declaring "mission accomplished" yet.

Australian Nick Kyrgios once again defies the odds progressing to the final 32 of the Australian Open after defeating 23rd seed Ivo Karlovic

ON A special day for tennis in this country, three local men progressed to the third round of the Australian Open.

Bernard Tomic staged a spirited fightback, roaring back from a set and a break down to upend German 23rd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) to complete a thrilling Wednesday night hat-trick for Australia.

The grand slam hosts are now assured of second-week singles participation after Tomic's fighting win set up an all-Australian third-round shootout with supersonic server Sam Groth.

"We're not going to have a lot of rallies, are we," Tomic joked.

The crowd was well and truly in Bernie's corner. Source: AP

Teenage excitement machine Nick Kyrgios is a hot favourite to follow Tomic or Groth into the last 16 after withstanding 40 aces from Ivo Karlovic to cut down the giant No.23 seed 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 5-7 6-4 in a cool and composed display on Show Court 3.

If Kyrgios can see off Tunisia's world No.75 Malek Jaziri on Friday, the 19-year-old will likely take on Roger Federer in a blockbuster battle for a quarter-final spot.

Tomic's tournament appeared to be coming to an end when he dropped the opening set in a tiebreaker and trailed Kohlschreiber 3-1 in the second set.

Sam Groth is into the Australian Open third round for the first time in his career. Source: AFP

But, unlike his first-round mid-round stoppage against Rafael Nadal last year, Tomic refused to quit.

Even after recovering to take the second set to draw level, the 22-year-old repeatedly found himself under pressure.

Time and again he stared down break points and, at one stage in the pivotal third-set tiebreaker, even three set points.

Seemingly on each occasion, Tomic's clutch serving saved him. He racked up 23 aces in all.

If not his serve, Tomic's big, flat forehand came to the rescue in the pressure moments as he eventually prevailed after three hours and five minutes.

"It was very difficult. He was playing very well," Tomic said.

"I had to find a way to get out of it. He was destroying me.

"I had to dig deep."

‘Warning alarms were screaming’

Santoso Sayogo, an investigator from Indonesias National Transportation Safety Committee, talks to the WSJ's Deborah Kan about what the flight-data recorder and cockpit-voice recorder can tell us about what went wrong on AirAsia Flight 8501.

WARNING alarms on AirAsia flight QZ8501 were "screaming" as the pilots desperately tried to stabilise the plane just before it plunged into the Java Sea.

The noise of several alarms - including one that indicated the plane was stalling - can be heard going off in recordings from the black box in the Airbus A320-200's cockpit, a crash investigator told AFP, requesting anonymity.

"The warning alarms, we can say, were screaming, while in the background they (the pilot and copilot) were busy trying to recover," the investigator said, adding the warnings were going off "for some time".

The investigator, from Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee, added that the pilots' voices were drowned out by the sound of the alarms.

The revelation came a day after Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said the plane had climbed abnormally fast before stalling and plunging into the sea, during a flight on December 28 in stormy weather from Indonesia's Surabaya to Singapore.

"In the final minutes, the plane climbed at a speed which was beyond normal," the minister told reporters.

The plane crashed in shallow waters with 162 people on board, but so far just 53 bodies have been recovered.

Divers have been struggling for a week against rough seas and strong currents to reach the plane's main body, which was spotted on the seabed and is thought to contain the bulk of the remaining passengers and crew.

The two black boxes - the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder - were recovered last week after a lengthy search, and investigators are expected to complete a preliminary report next week.

Under analysis .. Indonesian air force personnel carry the flight data recorder. Picture: AP Source: AP

As well as the cockpit voice recorder, the NTSC is examining a wealth of information in the flight data recorder, which monitors every major part of the plane.

They are focusing on the possibility of human or aircraft error, after ruling out terrorism following an analysis of the cockpit voice recorder.

Committee head Tatang Kurniadi said the preliminary report into the crash would be completed on Tuesday, a month after the accident. He said the full report would not be released publicly, but the media would be told some of its contents.

There was a huge international hunt for the crashed plane, involving ships from several countries including the US and China. All but seven of those on board the flight were Indonesian. The foreign nationals were from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Britain and France.

‘Cannibal cop’ cooks up dating profile

Must love cooking ... Gilberto Valle has reportedly set up a dating profile. Picture: Facebook. Source: Supplied

THE man dubbed the 'cannibal cop' has reportedly set up a dating profile in which he says he loves 'cooking' and wants to find someone 'a little kinky'.

The New York Post reports that Gilberto Valle's has set up a Match.com profile in which he says he is seeking a "non-judgmental" woman who's "a little kinky ;)."

Under the handle "AmicableOne14," the 30-year-old, disgraced former NYPD officer notes he's a big foodie looking for a woman age 24 to 32 who likes cooking, dining out and wine tasting.

Valle was found guilty of plotting to cook and eat his now-ex-wife, a conviction a judge later tossed out.

Of his ideal date, he writes: "You appreciate the simple things and can make the best out of a situation that is less than ideal."

"You're non-judgmental. You can generally see the good in people and you are kind and generous ... You appreciate and laugh at bad jokes," he writes. "If this is you, let's get a cup of coffee."

Valle notes he's divorced with a child but doesn't mention that his ex-wife fled out of fear.

"I have a few bucket list items: a cross-country drive along with other travelling, seeing Jerry Seinfeld do stand-up, going to a live Hell's Kitchen dinner service," he said.

He adds he recently got a new job, enjoys to play basketball and sometimes just relaxes at home.

"Occasionally I just need a day indoors by myself and that usually entails enjoying a glass of bourbon on the rocks," he writes.

Someone for everyone ... Gilberto Valle in the match.com profile. Picture: Match.com Source: Supplied

Valle denied the profile to The New York Post.

"A what? A dating profile? No, I'm sorry. I don't know anything about it," he said.

When shown a screenshot of the profile, he blurted, "I don't want to see it, thanks," and hurried inside his home.

Valle, who was released from jail in July, is under a "supervised release" schedule in which he must make curfew. Valle was freed on $100,000 bond after a surprise ruling that tossed his conviction for scheming to kidnap, kill, cook and eat his then-wife and other women — because a judge claimed it was all fantasy.

Valle admitted to engaging in depraved online interactions but claimed he never intended to carry out the grisly plots.

His latest online efforts are much more tame. The profile includes photos of his dog, Valle wearing a turtleneck shirt and grinning and him holding a baby.

He also brags that "I know more about baseball than all of your guy friends" and "I'm also seriously good at tweeting."

The disgraced ex-cop alludes in his profile to starting his life fresh

"I am spending my energy rebounding from the errors I made in my past and rebuilding my life. Things are progressing very well on that front, and I am just beginning a new career," he writes.

AN 81-YEAR-OLD Michigan man has discovered his late wife was keeping a huge secret from him for more than 50 years.

Tony Trapani was clearing out a filing cabinet belonging to his wife when he came across a letter, addressed to him, sent in 1959.

It was written by an ex-lover, and contained the information that Tony had a five-year-old son, born in 1953.

"Why my wife hid that letter is beyond me," Says Mr Trapani, who tried unsuccessfully to have children in his marriage.

That son, Samuel Childress, is now 61. Father and son met for the first time on the weekend.

Asked how he felt about the meeting, Mr Trapani said: "How does anybody feel when they have a newborn son?"

Curious ... Samuel Childress assumed his whole life his father just didn't want to met him. Picture: WXMI-TV Source: Supplied

Mr Childress, who grew up in Pennsylvania, had always thought his father received the latter and did not want anything to do with him. "I always asked my mom 'What does he look like?' and she said 'Go look in the mirror'," says Mr Childress.

"He is my full son that I had my whole life," Mr Trapani told WXMI-TV, crying.

The family will have a paternity test done, just to be sure.

Secret weapon in MH370 search

As the search for Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 continues, Australian officials have released a topographic visualization of the search area at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

POIGNANT messages from the families of MH370 passengers and crew are being used to help motivate search crews now in their fourth month of scouring the southern Indian Ocean.

The agency coordinating the search has revealed how morale is being maintained among search crews more than ten months after the Malaysia Airlines' Boeing 777 disappeared with 239 people on board.

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesman said several measures were in place to stress the importance of the mission to crews undertaking the work that has so far proven fruitless.

"It's a hard job in a tough and fatiguing environment so fresh crews are swapped after every (six week) swing," said the spokesman.

"Whenever new crews are about to go out to the search area they receive a thorough briefing on the operation, including by representatives of the ATSB explaining the search and its context.

"The briefing helps them to understand the particular importance of finding MH370 and that their work has a human side."

He said as part of the briefing, messages from MH370 passengers' next of kin were shared.

"This helps the crew understand that they are working to find the answers that will mean a great deal to people who have lost loved ones on the flight and for the future safety of air travel."

This week a new vessel will join the search with the job of going over areas already scanned by Fugro Discovery and Go Phoenix.

The Fugro Supporter has an Autonomous Underwater Vessel (AUV) that operates independently of the ship and is able to negotiate rugged terrain.

It is hoped the AUV may be able to find clues missed by the sonar scans used by other vessels, attached by kilometres of cable.

So far 16,000 square kilometres of ocean floor has been scanned — or just over a quarter of the priority search area, with no trace of the Boeing 777 detected.

Severe weather from Tropical Cyclone Bansi halted the search last Sunday, and the ATSB is very conscious of the looming onset of winter conditions in May.

"We're currently working to search as much area as possible before the worse winter weather sets in," said the spokesman.

"The southern Indian Ocean can be extremely rough at any time during the year but there are more bad days in the winter months."

Australian and Malaysian authorities are jointly funding the $60 million search and have both indicated it will continue until MH370 is found.

Trying to dig up the truth about William

Police have raided two homes on the NSW mid-north coast in the search for missing toddler William Tyrell.

THE man whose property is being searched in the hunt for William Tyrell had been due to fix the boy's grandmother's washing machine on the day the child went missing from her home, police sources have said.

Local tradesman William Harrie Spedding, 63, could not be contacted for comment yesterday as the yard of his rented home, including a fire pit, was dug up and the septic tank drained.

There is no suggestion Mr Spedding, known as Bill, will be charged and Superintendent Paul Fehon played down any suggestion the developments were a "major breakthrough", saying it was just one of many lines of inquiry.

"I don't describe it as a major breakthrough. It is a line of inquiry we're taking as part of the normal investigation phase for an investigation of this nature," Supt Fehon said.

Mr Spedding and his wife were questioned but released without charge. Mr Spedding also gave police a DNA sample.

Yesterday's search included an area beneath the house in semirural Wandoo Pl at Bonny Hills, on the mid-north coast, about 30 minutes drive from Kendall, where William disappeared on September 12.

It followed a police raid on a first-floor unit in Laurieton from where Mr Spedding used to run a pawn broking business. A mattress, computers and documents were seized. Three cars taken from the Bonny Hills property on Tuesday are also being examined.

Bikes and a trampoline belonging to Mr Spedding's grandchildren were in the Bonny Hills yard.

It has emerged that Mr Spedding visited William's grandmother's home in the days before he disappeared to quote a washing machine repair before ordering parts for the job. William, 3, and his sister, 4, arrived at their grandmother's home on the afternoon of Thursday, September 11.

They were playing hide and seek in the garden on the Friday morning when William disappeared about 10.30am.

A friend of Mr Spedding said that Mr Spedding had a missed call from William's grandmother on Friday morning but could not get through when he tried to call back.

He said that Mr Spedding then met his wife Margaret for a coffee before they went to a presentation at the primary school of one of their grandchildren. He said that Mr Spedding went to do a job at nearby Dunbogan that afternoon and called William's grandmother's home.

He said Mr Spedding spoke to William's mother who advised him not to worry about the repair job.

"He's always been a gentleman. There's not too many people like him," the friend, who asked not to be named, said. "He'd do anything for his wife. And the kids love him."

During the four-month search for William, Mr Spedding had appealed for help to find the missing boy through his Facebook page.

Like many of the locals, the grandfather has been posting updates about the search. On December 4 he shared a link to a photo of little William in a blue checked shirt and a message that said: "Today, somebody is keeping a secret. They got up this morning. Had breakfast.

Realised they need to pick up some more milk. Wasted time on Facebook. Made some calls. All the while maintaining a poker face."

Mr Spedding added his own message: "Don't give up looking."

Superintendent Fehon said that William's distraught family were being kept up to date.

He said that investigators searched "a number of premises" in Laurieton and surrounding areas.

"This is a line of inquiry that we are taking as part of the normal investigation phase for an investigation of this nature," Supt Fehon said.

It was "truly just one line of inquiry" he added.

"We were thorough up in Kendall so it's just a continuation of that," he said.

"It's a three-year-old child, remember."

Supt Fehon said he did not expect any arrests to be made in the next 24 hours.

WILLIAM'S TROUBLED LIFE WAS IMPROVING WHEN HIS FAMILY'S PEACE WAS SHATTERED

Janet Fife-Yeomans

FOR someone so young, William Tyrell's upbringing was far too troubled. But the little boy had seemed to be regaining some normalcy in his life when he went missing four months ago.

For complicated legal reasons, the three-year-old's family has never been named but a family friend described William as a "happy, cheeky, adventurous" boy.

He had arrived with his four-year-old sister to visit their grandmother in Kendall on the afternoon of Thursday, September 11.

Their grandfather had died and the family was there to look after their grandmother, who they called "Nana", after she had recently got out of hospital.

William Tyrell / Picture: Supplied Source: Supplied

While the family history must remain a mystery, they had driven from their home at Killara on Sydney's upper north shore to the mid-north coast for what was meant to be a few relaxing days in Nana's comfortable home close to the bush.

William loved everything to do with Spider-Man, fire engines and police cars and on the Friday morning he was dressed in his favourite Spider-Man costume as he played a familiar game of hide-and-seek with his sister around the outside of the house. Their father had driven into town, about 2km away, to do some shopping.

Their mother made a cup of tea and their grandmother was sitting in the garden when William ran off around the side of the house about 10.25am. He has not been seen ever since.

No screams or cries for help were heard and William's sister did not see what happened but when his mother went to look for him less than five minutes later, he was gone.

Police have investigated William's wider family and there is nothing to indicate any involvement in his disappearance.

A family friend, Nicole, has spoken on behalf of William's parents, saying they are devastated as police continue to keep them up to date with the search.

"He would have been beside himself to see the amount of police cars and police officers at Nana's house," she has said.

"What we want to do is show him this on his 21st (birthday) and tell him that a lot of people came together to help find him and show him all the police cars that were here for him."

HAMLETS HELPLESS AS SEARCH CONTINUES

IT is the sleepy seaside town that could hide evil.

The biggest thing that ever happened in Laurieton, on the state's mid-north coast, was the day US comedian Bob Hope dropped in — when his plane made an emergency landing in 1944.

Now Laurieton and the beach hamlet of Bonny Hills are the focus of a potential murder investigation into missing toddler William Tyrell.

Comedian and actor Bob Hope / Picture: AP Source: News Limited

Laurieton historian Mitch McKay says the story of Hope's dramatic appearance has become local legend. "It is probably the most-known story because of Hope's notoriety more than anything else," Mr McKay said.

Hope was flying from New Guinea, where he had been entertaining troops, to Sydney when the seaplane developed technical problems and the pilot was forced to land on a sand spit. That evening Hope, infamous for his womanising, gave an impromptu concert at the School of Arts Hall where he enthusiastically taught young women how to do the Hokey Pokey.

At the time Laurieton was a fishing village with a population of about 600. Now 1931 people live in the town, which has become popular with retirees.

Just outside Laurieton at Bonny Hills, one resident , who wished not to be named, said the investigation was the only thing people were discussing.

"It is just a one-pub town … with a very close community, we are all shocked," she said.

Port Macquarie Hastings councillor Adam Roberts said people were struggling to come to terms with the fact that William may have been murdered in Bonny Hills. "There is a sense of disbelief that this could happen in our area," he said. "There is a feeling of helplessness, if there was something we could do, we would be doing it."

$200,000 a year to live on a cruise ship

For most this is a fleeting holiday retreat but for one woman, this is home. Source: Supplied

CRUISE SHIPS can be a polarising way to spend a holiday. It seems people are either enamoured by the glamorous spectre of floating ballrooms or deterred by the claustrophobic idea of them.

An 86-year-old Floridian retiree rests firmly in the former category. So much so that she pays nearly AUD $200,000 a year to live out her days on a cruise liner.

According to USA Today, Lee Wachstetter sold her home and took to the sea after the death of her husband in 1997.

In her former life she was a registered nurse but now she is simply known as Mama Lee by the staff and fellow passengers on the ship that can accommodate 1,070 travellers.

Ms. Wachstetter has lost count of how many countries she has been to and seldom bothers to leave the ship when it docks anymore.

"And when most everybody goes ashore, it's so quiet, and I have almost the whole ship for myself," she told USA Today.

The permanent resident on the cruise liner has been on the open seas for nearly seven years and says she was previously on a Holland America ship for three years until they ceased their dance program.

"I enjoy dancing, and this was the best of the remaining ships that still use dance hosts," she said.

Ms. Wachstetter appears to have no intentions of returning to a landlocked life saying, "I'm so spoiled I doubt that I would ever be able to readjust to the real world again."

Did Nissan deceive the internet?

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 14 Januari 2015 | 23.26

Carlos Ghosn had an interesting time on Reddit. Source: AFP

WHEN the head honcho of Nissan decided to offer himself on Reddit, you can bet he didn't expect this kind of backlash.

But backlash he got.

Nissan and Renault chief executive Carlos Ghosn took part in a Reddit AMA (ask me anything) yesterday and, today, he's probably wishing he hadn't.

It seemed to start out fine. Mr Ghosn logged onto the social media platform with the invitation: "I'm the CEO of Renault and Nissan and we're making autonomous driving vehicles happen by 2020. Ask me anything!".

Mr Ghosn was lobbed with question by Redditors (Reddit users) but some have accused the company of manipulating the whole thing into a blatant PR exercise. Specifically, Redditor HimCaysE pointed out Mr Ghosn was cherrypicking very particular questions he would answer. Suspiciously, some questions appeared to come from accounts that were either new or didn't have much of a Reddit history.

Another Redditor, chrisman01, wrote: "[It's] extremely obvious, considering how all the questions that are positive and name very specific products are the only ones that get answers. Answers that all plug their products. The AMA is the most blatant PR stunt I've seen. Seriously, read these freaking questions and answers and tell me they don't seem utterly staged."

Some of the questions Mr Ghosn answered were:

"Hi Carlos, I'm a diehard Datsun/Nissan fan that is very glad to see well the company has done with you at the helm and hoping to see many more years of continued success. My question is how you see hydrogen fuel cells playing a part in electric vehicles and if Nissan/Renault are investing, or planning to invest, in this technology directly or through partnerships? Thank you and regards, Doug."

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn presents the new Titan XD truck at the North American International Auto Show on Monday. Source: AP

"Hello Mr Ghosn, first off thanks for doing an AMA! Second, I am new to car sales and have recently been hired at a Nissan dealership, do you have any advice for a new Nissan salesman?"

"How do you intend to solve the issue of inclement weather with fully autonomous vehicles? Will they be able to deal with snow and ice?"

"Hello Mr Ghosn. As lab partners go, NASA is hard to beat. From Nissan's point of view, what areas of research will this partnership benefit? CES showed how competitive this field is — do you expect collaboration with NASA to give you the edge? And if so, how? Thanks! Tom."

Questions Mr Ghosn declined to answer included:

"During your time with Nissan, have you had any other type of car other than a Nissan?"

"What are your thoughts on the US government's bail outs of the auto industry and how do you think those bail outs panned out now that it's 2015?"

"Hi Mr Ghosn, what do you think about Google's autonomous cars? What's your competitive advantage?"

"Not that there's a chance in hell, but I'm getting married in July, so can I have a GT-R as my gift?"

"What's your favourite flavour of bubblegum?"

However, Nissan has declined that anything nefarious took place. It told Mashable that the "audience was pure" and that there was no astroturfing.

Nissan Australia had no comment to add and referred to responses from its global team.

The big thing China totally sucks at

China has a new lucky charm - a 12-year-old Aussie ballboy who helped them to victory in the Asian Cup. In this NEW footage, keeper Wang Dalei shows Stephan White his gratitude.

Hi, I'm a Chinese soccer player and I even suck at sucking. Source: Getty Images

China is the world's most populous nation, will soon be the world's largest economy, and is powerful in all sorts of ways most of us can only imagine.

But there's one major global arena in which China completely and utterly sucks. Sure, we could use a grown-up phrase like "fails to pull its weight" or something similar, but let's say it like it really is.

We're talking about soccer, and China sucks at it. In fact, it suckety-sucks. And boy, does that hurt Chinese pride.

China's fortunate win over Saudi Arabia in the Asian Cup on Saturday night was a step in the right direction. And don't forget that old Chinese proverb from 6th century BC philosopher Lao-Tzu that says "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step".

The problem for Chinese football is that it's had that first step plenty of times before. It's the next and step, and the ones after it, that are the problem.

Enjoy it while it lasts, fellas. Cos it probably won't. Picture: Patrick Hamilton / AFP Source: AFP

Every time Chinese football looks like it's going somewhere, it ends up going nowhere. China has made the final of the Asian Cup twice, losing to Saudi Arabia in 1984 and to Japan in 2004. But its cabinet remains devoid of major trophies.

China has made a World Cup just once, in 2002, when it enjoyed a saloon passage through to the finals because co-hosts Japan and South Korea both had automatic entry and weren't there in qualifying.

Like the 1974 Socceroos, China didn't score a goal at its first World Cup. And it could be decades before it does.

The question is why. Why, when the Chinese Super League is strong enough to produce last year's Asian Champions League winners Guangzhou Evergrande FC, does the sport struggle so badly?

One problem, according to The Australian's senior football journalist Ray Gatt, is corruption.

"There has always been a lot of corruption and match fixing in the Chinese league, and that holds them back. It stops the development of good players," Gatt says.

Freelance Asian football reporter Alan Mtashar, who writes for SBS and ESPN, says a clash of cultures is another problem.

"They haven't really developed a lot of players or stuck with coaches that understand the Chinese," Mtashar says. "They've had Spanish coaches and now there's this French guy. I feel like there's a disconnect. They've got some decent players, a strong league and cash resources. But they're not producing on the field."

China has had its greatest success on the global sporting stage in sports where it can hand-pick children from infancy and funnel them into Olympic sports which are short on prestige but long on medals.

Unlike in ping pong, China has taken its eye off the ball when it comes to football. Picture: Warren Little / Getty Images Source: Getty Images

But that approach doesn't work in football, where no single body type is perfect. For example, look how often Tim Cahill soars above his opposition to score a goal from headers. Yet he's only 178cm (5 foot 10).

The salvation for Chinese football may lie in a new program developed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, a self-confessed football nut. The President is introducing soccer in schools as a compulsory part of the national curriculum, and aims to have some 20,000 schools with new soccer fields by 2017.

You can't pluck some 5-year-old from a rice paddy in Yunnan province and expect them to do this. It just doesn't work that way in football. Picture: Patrick Hamilton / AFP Source: AFP

Property developers could also be unlikely saviours. A recent report in The Economist said that most of the owners of the 16 clubs in the Chinese Super League are either developers or have substantial property interests, and that some are receiving cheaper land from local administrations in exchange for integrating football pitches into their developments.

If China is serious about growing the game from the ground up, then success will likely follow given its enormous population base, and the team will slowly rise from its current FIFA ranking of 96. But that could take a generation.

In the meantime, sports stores in Beijing and Shanghai will likely continue selling more of the red shirts of Liverpool and Manchester United than the red shirts of the national men's squad.

C’mon, this isn’t a beauty trend

A model gets his makeup done backstage at the Sankuanz show during London Collections: Men Autumn Winter 2015 on January 12th in London. Photo: Nicky J Sims. Source: Getty Images

A LEADING mental health expert has slammed a Chinese fashion designer who sent male models down the runway sporting black eyes and split lips.

Shangguan Zhe's label Sankuanz presented its Men's RTW Fall 2015 show at London's biannual men's fashion week, London Collections: Men, on Tuesday. Makeup artist Maria Comparetto created exaggerated bruises, black eyes and gashes on her young models in what she described as a "playful edge on fight club".

"We used obscure colours that you wouldn't usually see in bruising and made them more cartoon-like. It was bright, vibrant and fun but the guys were still pretty macho," Comparetto told Mail Online.

"The night before the show, I looked through the roster of models and decided which section of the face we would play up based on their features.

"So whether it was their forehead, lips, cheek or eyes, I told my team to take their time and make it look beautiful but hard at the same time," she said.

Earlier this week, Comparetto posted a photo of the beauty look on Instagram accompanied with the hashtag #beautifulbruises.

Aram Hosie from ReachOut Australia — a mental health support service for young people with a focus on domestic violence — says he is "appalled that commercial organisations, or designers in this case, would look to use violence to promote their brand and product.

The makeup is insensitive towards those who have experienced violence, Mr Hosie said.

"The last thing we want is for young people who may have been the victim of any kind of violence to think that what they have experienced is being trivialised or not treated seriously."

IS: Mohammed cartoon ‘stupid’

Today more disturbing video of the gunmen behind the Charlie Hebdo massacre has emerged, showing the terrorists celebrating the slaughter

A woman with the slogan "Je Suis Charlie" (I am Charlie), referring to Charlie Hebdo, the satirical magazine whose Paris offices were attacked by brothers, French nationals Cherif and Said Kouachi, arrives to takes part in a Unity rally "Marche Republicaine" in Paris. Picture: AFP Source: AFP

THE Islamic State group's radio has described French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo's publication of a new cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed as an "extremely stupid" act.

"Charlie Hebdo has again published cartoons insulting the prophet and this is an extremely stupid act," said a statement read on Al-Bayan radio, which the jihadist group broadcasts in areas under its control in Syria and Iraq.

The terrorist group's comments come as a top leader of Yemen's al-Qaeda branch appeared in an 11-minute internet video, saying that the massacre at Charlie Hebdo was in "vengeance for the prophet."

Nasr al-Ansi, a top commander of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP as the branch is known, said France belongs to the "party of Satan" and warned of more "tragedies and terror." He said Yemen's al-Qaeda branch "chose the target, laid out the plan and financed the operation."

Yemen's al-Qaeda branch claimed responsibility for last week's attack on a Paris newspaper when two masked gunmen killed 12 people, including much of the weekly's editorial staff and two police officers.

In the past, Al-Ansi has condemned Islamic State's horrific act of publicly beheading hostages, saying: "No doubt, some of our brothers were affected by seeing scenes of beheadings that were spread recently. We do not accept and we strongly reject them."

Meanwhile, Iran has also condemned the publication the new cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed by the French satirical magazine, saying it was "insulting" and "provocative".

The magazine cover "provokes the emotions of Muslims and hurts their feelings around the world, and could fan the flame of a vicious circle of extremism," said foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham.

Popular ... a man buys a copy of the new edition of Charlie Hebdo magazine at a Pigalle newsstand in Paris, France. Three million copies of the controversial magazine have been printed so far. Picture: Aurelien Meunier/Getty Images Source: Getty Images

Iranian officials denounced the massacre the day it occurred and Afkham said on Wednesday that such attacks "have no closeness or similarity to Islam" and are "in complete contradiction to Islamic teaching".

However, Ms Afkham she indicated that the new cartoon "is not acceptable" and such "abuse should be prevented".

"Respecting the beliefs and values of followers of divine religions is an acceptable principle," she said.

CHARLIE HEBDO PRINTING TWO MILLION MORE

The criticism of the new edition comes after distributors said Charlie Hebdo will print two million more copies of this week's issue after overwhelming demand for it.

"The editor decided this morning to increase the print run to five million," said Veronique Faujour, head of press distribution firm MLP

One newsstand just off Paris' Champs Elysee sold out at 6.05am — five minutes after opening.

At Saint-Lazare, people hoping to buy a copy scuffled when they realised there weren't enough to go around.

The UNDP union representing news vendors throughout the country said the new Charlie Hebdo issue had sold out across France hours after it hit newsstands.

A total of 700,000 issues of the magazine were distributed but other copies of the magazine will be made available for sale throughout the week.

Several copies of the publication had already found their way on to eBay where they were attracting three-figure bids, well in excess of the 3-euro ($A4.50) cover price.

Supporters ... Turkish journalists hold a banner which read: "We all are Charlie" as they march on Istiklal avenue to French consulate, in Istanbul during a rally they organised after the Paris attacks. Picture: AFP Source: AFP

Meanwhile, the daily Cumhuriyet newspaper in Turkey printed a four-page pull-out containing cartoons and articles translated into Turkish from the latest Charlie Hebdo issue. Along with a Charlie Hebdo editorial about how it would not give into the attacks, the excerpts in Cumhuriyet included cartoons satirising Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram and other jihadists. The pull-out edition did not include the controversial front cover of the new Charlie Hebdo, which shows a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed.

However a smaller version of that cartoon was included on page five of the newspaper itself in a column by Cumhuriyet commentator Hikmet Cetinkaya.

Sources at Cumhuriyet said there had been a long debate about printing the edition, which ended in the printing of a shorter pull-out version rather than the full issue of the French weekly. Cumhuriyet was founded in 1924 at the behest of the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

FACEBOOK POST SPARKS COMIC'S ARREST

French comedian Dieudonne has been arrested for being an "apologist for terrorism" after writing a Facebook comment suggesting he sympathised with one of the Paris gunmen, a judicial source says.

Prosecutors had opened the case against him on Monday after he posted "Tonight, as far as I'm concerned, I feel like Charlie Coulibaly" — mixing the popular slogan "Je Suis Charlie" used in homage to the journalists killed at magazine Charlie Hebdo, with a reference to gunman Amedy Coulibaly.

Coulibaly killed four Jews at a Jewish supermarket on Friday and a policewoman the day before.

The comedian made international headlines in 2013 when French footballer Nicolas Anelka was banned for five matches by English football authorities for using a hand-gesture created by Dieudonne that many people consider anti-Semitic.

Dieudonne made his controversial Facebook post after attending Sunday's unity march against extremism that brought more than 1.5 million people onto the streets of Paris after the attacks.

He described the march — considered the biggest rally in modern French history — as "a magical moment comparable to the big-bang". The government has in the past banned Dieudonne's shows because it considers them "anti-Semitic".

In response to the interior minister's comment, the comedian said the government was trying to "ruin my life" when "I am only trying to make people laugh".

He has removed the offending remark from his Facebook page.

CHILLING NEW FOOTAGE OF GUNMEN

New video footage has emerged of the moment two gunmen fired on French police — minutes after killing 12 people and wounding ten others in the Charlie Hedbo newsroom massacre.

In the footage, which was filmed by a bystander watching the terrorist attack unfold from an upstairs office window, brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi can be seen calmly returning to their getaway car after the killings.

First images of AirAsia fuselage

Santoso Sayogo, an investigator from Indonesias National Transportation Safety Committee, talks to the WSJ's Deborah Kan about what the flight-data recorder and cockpit-voice recorder can tell us about what went wrong on AirAsia Flight 8501.

A SINGAPORE navy ship has located the fuselage of the AirAsia plane that crashed into the sea with 162 people on board, the city-state's defence chief said.

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said in a Facebook post he had been informed that one of Singapore's navy ships involved in the search, MV Swift Rescue, "has located the fuselage of the AirAsia plane in the Java Sea".

Mr Ng also posted images of the fuselage, which were taken underwater by the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).

He said it showed part of the wing and words on the fuselage.

The words "now" and "everyone" are visible on the photos, apparently from AirAsia's motto "Now Everyone Can Fly" painted on the plane's exterior.

Finally found ... the last missing piece to the aircraft. Picture: Facebook Source: Facebook

He then wrote: "We have informed BASARNAS, the Indonesian search authority who can now begin recovery operations."

Mr Hen went on to describe the accident as a "tragic event resulting in the loss of many lives".

"I hope that with the fuselage located, some form of closure can come to the families of the victims to ease their grief," he said.

"I would also like to thank all our SAF servicemen who have given this mission their all to help the Indonesians recover the flight data and cockpit voice recorders, and the fuselage. Especially to the crew of MV Swift Rescue, you never gave up - well done."

Finding the fuselage of the Airbus 320-200 is seen as vital, as most of the victims are believed to be still trapped inside. Just 48 bodies have so far been recovered.

Indonesia's national search and rescue chief Bambang Soelistyo confirmed that the fuselage had been found by the Singaporean ship and said divers would head to the wreckage on Thursday.

"It's dark today, its not possible to dive, so we will dive tomorrow. The main focus is to find victims in the fuselage," he said.

"If it's difficult we will lift (the fuselage) up either in part or in whole."

The plane's black boxes — the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder — have already been recovered, raising hopes of determining why it went down.

Flight 8501 crashed in the Java Sea on December 28 in stormy weather during a short, routine flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.

Found ... the newly recovered cockpit voice recorder from the ill-fated AirAsia Flight 8501. Picture: AP Source: AP

Divers located the crucial second black box just days ago, hours after retrieving the other black box - the flight recorder - from the ocean floor.

Investigators hope it will reveal the final words of the crew and help them determine what went wrong on board the doomed flight.

Earlier this week, investigators said they believed the AirAsia plane "experienced an explosion" before hitting the water, due to a significant change in air pressure.

"My analysis is, based on the wreckage found and other findings, the plane experienced an explosion before it hit the water," Suryadi Bambang Supriyadi, operations coordinator at the National Search and Rescue Agency, said.

Retrieved ... Indonesian officers move the Flight Data Recorder of the AirAsia flight QZ8501 into a suitable protective transportation case. Picture: Adek Berry Source: AFP

He said the left side of the plane seemed to have disintegrated, pointing to a change in pressure that could have caused an explosion.

"The cabin was pressurised and before the pressure of the cabin could be adjusted, it went down - boom. That explosion was heard in the area," Mr Supriyadi said.

However there is no official confirmation of the tragic events that unfolded as flight QZ8501 crashed into the Java Sea, as an investigator at the National Transport Committee refuted the claims.

"There is no data to support that kind of theory," said Santoso Sayogo.

The US space agency said on Wednesday it could not confirm that an ammonia leak was the cause, as the Russian space agency reported earlier.

"ISS flight controllers are not sure if the alarm was triggered by a pressure spike, a faulty sensor, or a problem in a computer relay box," NASA said on Twitter.

"Crew is safe. No ammonia leak confirmed. Crew responded to coolant loop pressure increases."

American astronauts also tweeted to saw they were doing fine.

Russia's space agency blamed the evacuation on a leak of a toxic substance.

The "toxic substance was emitted from a cooling system into the station's atmosphere" in the US segment of the station, the agency said in a statement.

"At present the American segment has been evacuated and the crew is safely located in the Russian segment," the statement said.

The American segment has been sealed off.

A representative of the Russian mission control centre told Russian news agencies that the substance was ammonia.

The accident could also delay the departure of the US SpaceX cargo ship Dragon, which brought supplies earlier this week.

Fixing the leak may also require an emergency space walk, he added.

The International Space Station is a rare area of US-Russian co-operation that has not been hit by the crisis in Ukraine, which has prompted Washington to impose sanctions on Moscow.

In total 16 countries work on the ISS, whose cost is mainly shouldered by the United States.

Since NASA phased out the space shuttle system in 2011, it depends entirely on Russia to send its astronauts to the ISS.

IS hackers call Kim a ‘crying pig’

'Crying pig' ... Islamic State hackers have made fun of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un. Picture: AP Source: AP

HACKERS declaring support for Islamic State jihadists appeared to have taken over a Facebook page promoting North Korea's state-run airline Air Koryo, calling Kim Jong-un a "crying pig".

The hackers replaced the page's photo banner with the black and white flag of the Islamic State (IS) group, which is also known as ISIS, and filled its timeline with pictures declaring support for the jihadists and mocking Kim's regime.

The hack post included an image of Noth Korean leader Kim Jong-un weeping at his father's funeral. Source: Supplied

One image showed Kim weeping at his father Kim Jong-il's funeral in 2011, with the caption "crying pig".

At one point, the page's profile picture was changed to an image of a fighter with his face wrapped in a scarf, captioned "CyberCaliphate" and "I love you ISIS".

Another photo showing IS fighters was captioned: "North Korea the communist thug nation and the Chinese communist thugs will pay a price for their collaboration with the enemies of the muwahideen."

The page, which previously posted schedule information and news on aviation tours to North Korea, was reportedly operated by airline enthusiasts. Source: Supplied

It is not confirmed that the Facebook page, which has some 8000 "likes", is run by the airline.

South Korean news agency Yonhap described the page as Air Koryo's Facebook account and said its earlier posts had been deleted by the hackers.

"North Korea the communist thug nation and the Chinese communist thugs will pay a price for their collaboration with the enemies of the muwahideen." Source: Supplied

A report by the website NK News in September said the page, which previously posted schedule information and news on aviation tours to North Korea, was operated by airline enthusiasts.

The hacking came two days after a group styling itself as the CyberCaliphate, using the same "I love you ISIS" profile picture, hacked US Central Command's social media accounts, forcing the military to take down the command's Twitter feed.

The history of Charlie Hebdo

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 07 Januari 2015 | 23.26

CHARLIE Hebdo gained notoriety in February 2006 when it reprinted cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that had originally appeared in Danish daily Jyllands-Posten, causing fury across the Muslim world.

Its offices were firebombed in November 2011 and its website hacked when it published a cartoon of Mohammed and under the title Charia Hebdo. No one was injured in that attack. RELATED: MASS SHOOTING AT FRENCH MAGAZINE

Despite being taken to court under anti-racism laws, the weekly continued to publish controversial cartoons of the Muslim prophet.

"We do caricatures of everyone, and above all every week, and when we do it with the Prophet, it's called provocation," editor Stephane Charbonnier (aka Charb) said at the time, defending the magazine against self-sensorship.

In September 2012 Charlie Hebdo published cartoons of a naked Mohammed as violent protests were taking place in several countries over a low-budget film, titled Innocence of Muslims, which was made in the United States and insulted the prophet.

French schools, consulates and cultural centres in 20 Muslim countries were briefly closed along with embassies for fear of retaliatory attacks at the time.

Charbonnier, who was one of the victims of the shooting overnight, had received countless death threats and was living under police protection.

Charlie Hebdo is a left-wing, anti-religious magazine that was founded in 1969 and banned a couple of times in its history — once for making fun of former French president Charles de Gaulle's death.

That, incidentally, was when it changed its name from Hara kiri Hebdo to Charlie Hebdo, taking its name from the Peanuts character Charlie Brown. The new name however was also said to have been an inside joke about de Gaulle.

The publication ceased production in 1981 citing a lack of readers but relaunched in 1992.

Pyne’s plan to stop third biggest killer

Stopping the brain drain ... young researchers will be able to apply for grants to work on dementia research from today. Picture: Supplied Source: Supplied

YOUNG Aussie scientists are being offered lucrative research grants as incentives to trade in overseas academic careers and stay in Australia to help fight dementia.

In a bid to combat fears of a wide-scale research brain drain, Education Minister Christopher Pyne will today announce that scientists and researchers in the early stages of their careers can now apply for a slice of $46 million in grant funding for dementia research.

The fellowship program, which is a part of the federal government's $200 million Boosting Dementia Research Initiative, has been welcomed by dementia and Alzheimer's groups which previously lashed the Coalition for removing an age care subsidy for dementia patients.

Dementia is currently the third leading cause of death in Australia, with more than 340,000 people living with the disease across the country.

Mr Pyne said urgent action was needed to find better treatments and Australia could not afford to lose its top young researchers to prestigious international universities.

"To make a real dent in this we need new thinking and creative ideas," Mr Pyne said.

"I believe Australia's up and coming researchers have the drive and the enthusiasm to make an enormous contribution," Mr Pyne said.

Chief executive of Alzheimer's Australia, Carol Bennett, agreed bright young academics would be critical to advancing dementia research.

"This is an area of brain drain in this country," Ms Bennett said.

"We need to ensure that we can attract the best and brightest researchers."

Finding answers ... more needs to be understood about the treatments for and triggers of dementia. Picture: Supplied Source: Supplied

Ms Bennett said a significant amount of research needed to be done examining all aspects of the illness, including its management and treatment, and determining the lifestyle factors that could trigger its onset.

"There are very big and complex questions still to be answered," she said.

The research fellowships will be funded through the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Australian Research Council.

The federal government had come under fire for its decision last year to cut the dementia and severe behaviours supplement, which is paid to aged care facilities looking after patients with dementia, after the cost of the scheme soared.

It has since committed to developing an alternative support package for dementia patients, and Ms Bennett said she was optimistic that would be included in this year's budget.

Where are the black boxes?

Indonesian officals confrim that the tail of missing AirAsia plane has been found in the Java sea.

THE tail of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 that crashed more than one week ago has been found in the Java Sea, the Indonesian search and rescue chief has confirmed.

The discovery on the seabed, 11 days after the flight disappeared, could mark a breakthrough in the search as the tail of a plane usually houses the "black box" flight data recorders, crucial to determining the cause of a crash.

MYSTERY: What really happened to AirAsia Flight QZ8501?

"We have successfully obtained part of the plane that has been our target. The tail portion has been confirmed found," National Search and Rescue chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo told reporters in Jakarta.

He said he was sure of the discovery after seeing photographs of the underwater wreckage, on which the company logo could be seen.

One released image appeared to show an upside down "A" painted on a piece of metal, while another grainy shot depicted some sort of mechanical parts.

The crucial part from the wreckage was discovered about nine kilometres from where the plane lost contact - after it was detected by an Indonesian survey ship.

FLYING IN ASIA: Five things to know

Following days of strong currents and murky water that hindered the operation, searchers finally managed to get some of the first photographs of the debris near the seabed.

"Today we successfully discovered the part of the plane that became the main aim since yesterday," Mr Soelistyo said.

"I can ensure that this is part of the tail with the AirAsia mark on it."

The find is particularly significant because the all-important cockpit voice and flight data recorders, or black boxes, are located in the aircraft's tail. Small pieces of the plane, such as seats, have previously been spotted.

"I am led to believe the tail section has been found. If right part of tail section then the black box should be there," AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes wrote on Twitter.

"We need to find all parts soon so we can find all (our) guests to ease the pain of our families. That still is our priority."

Finding the black boxes will be key to the investigation. They provide essential information including the plane's vertical and horizontal speeds along with engine temperature and final conversations between the captain and co-pilot.

The ping-emitting beacons still have about 20 days before their batteries go dead, but high surf had prevented the deployment of ships that drag "ping" locators.

Sonar-equipped ships involved in the massive international hunt have also identified what they believe to be the fuselage of the plane.

Looking for answers ... a crew member of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ship JS Onami uses his binoculars during a search operation for the victims of AirAsia Flight 8501. Picture: AP Source: AP

Mr Soelistyo said the top priority remains recovering more bodies along with the black boxes. So far, 40 corpses have been found, including an additional one announced, but time is running out.

At two weeks, most corpses will sink, and there are already signs of serious decomposition, said Anton Castilani, head of the country's disaster identification victim unit.

To date, action has been taken against eight officials — "two from the transport ministry, four from state navigation operator AirNav, and two airport officials," transport ministry official Hadi Mustofa said.

"One of the transport ministry officials was fired and the other official was temporarily suspended.

"As for the other six officials, some have been temporarily suspended and some have been transferred."

AirAsia Indonesia has declined to comment on allegations it violated its permits. Singapore authorities say the Sunday flight schedule had been cleared at their end.

Mustofa said the ministry was checking all domestic airlines for any other flight violations and would announce its findings later this week.

The Airbus A320-200, with 161 people on board, lost contact with ground control on Sunday, December 28, while flying over the Java Sea after taking off from a provincial city in Indonesia for Singapore.

Search and rescue operations have since been underway but have been dogged by bad weather.

Since the plane crashed, many theories about what may have caused the demise of flight QZ8501 have emerged.

But aviation experts have cautioned that only the black boxes can reveal the truth.

Why I give up booze every January

Could you give up booze for all of January? John Ore has done it for the past eight years. Source: Supplied

BACK in December of 2006, right after I'd pulled up stakes to follow the woman who would eventually become my wife to New York, said woman made a preposterous proposal: Not drinking for the entire month of January.

It was more of a dare than anything. Could we really forgo wine with dinner, cocktails with friends, and beers while watching football, for a month?

Eight years later, we are on our ninth consecutive Drynuary: our name for the practice of kicking off the New Year by abstaining from booze for a month.

The idea was born as sort of a post-holiday cleanse, a way to atone for the excesses of food and drink that start around Christmas and stagger through New Year's. Weeks of holiday parties and family gatherings inevitably lead to a desire to take a break from the attendant overindulgence.

An alternative to a traditional New Year's resolution, Drynuary was a challenge to ourselves that was more coherent and realistic than going to the gym, but with similar benefits: feeling healthier, sleeping better, dropping a few kilos.

Plus, unlike a gym membership, Drynuary saves us money.

Did you party too hard in the silly season and feel like you need a break? Source: Supplied

There's also an undeniable confidence that comes from doing something that not everyone can do. Make no mistake: If you like drinking, Drynuary is hard, and it's supposed to be.

I'm not particularly religious, but I appreciate the Lenten aspect of giving up something I enjoy for an extended period of time just to say I can. (My birthday falls during Lent, so no way am I giving up drinking then.)

Drynuary forces us to consider the role alcohol plays in our everyday lives, especially when its absence is the most obvious or stark. My wife and I don't hibernate for a month, sipping herbal teas and avoiding glances at the stemware and the three neglected beers left in the fridge.

Our first Drynuary we met friends at a bar to watch football, and the amount of soft drink we downed led to plenty of speculation that we were expecting.

I've been the designated driver for post-snowboarding pub crawls and I've had to explain to business associates why I'm not having wine with dinner while travelling for work. Half of the point of Drynuary is to live your life as you normally do, just without drinking.

That doesn't sound like fun to some people, which is fine: Drynuary is 100 per cent optional. And if you do do it, it's OK to personalise it. We start on Jan. 2, because New Year's Day is a traditionally optimal day for watching sports, eating chilli, and drinking bloody marys. And we're not slavish in our devotion to teetotaling for the entire month: I broke Drynuary a few days early for a trip to Puerto Rico one year; another year, it was for a trip to Peter Luger's, the best steakhouse in NYC.

Summer festival season has taken a toll on many. Source: Supplied

My wife and I don't claim that we invented the idea of abstaining for the month of January (it seems especially popular in the U.K.); we just gave it a name. It seemed natural to combine dry and January into the portmanteau Drynuary. You should have heard the names of the months when we were trying to get pregnant. (Spoiler alert: One was Schtuptember.)

Others have tried the pedestrian Dry January, the baffling Janopause, or the just-wrong Dryuary, which seems forced and lacks an important nasal consonant. Plenty of people hate the name Drynuary, and yet it's still caught on. It's even been co-opted by the likes of Bon Appétit, which I suppose legitimatises it as an activity.

Over the past few years, I've been lucky enough to write about Drynuary for a number of publications. While I like to think that these efforts offer a rallying point or community to support Drynuary participants, writing is also a selfish exercise for me. It gives me something to focus on, a distraction during a month bereaved of a favourite distraction.

Luckily, I've got help. This Drynuary, instead of sharing mocktail recipes (let's be honest, they've been done to death), share your stories on social media with the #Drynuary hashtag. If you're doing Drynuary this year, hopefully our meanderings will assist you in making the most of it — and if you're not, maybe we'll provide you with some thought-provoking entertainment as you consider which craft beer to order next.
