Egypt balloon horror caught on video

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 27 Februari 2013 | 23.26

Warning: disturbing images. A deadly air balloon accident in Egypt was caught on amateur camera. Vision courtesy Al Jazeera TV.

TERRIFYING video has emerged of a hot-air balloon catching fire before a fatal crash in Egypt.

The amateur footage, recorded from another balloon nearby, was broadcast by Al Jazeera TV today following the deaths of 19 people in the Luxor tragedy.

Smoke can be seen billowing from the stricken craft in an eerie silhouette against the rising sun. Then, the smoke trail goes down to the ground as the balloon collapses and plummets 300m.

Meanwhile, a photographer who witnessed the tragedy has posted an image taken moments before the accident with the words: ''I prefer to remember yesterday like this''.

San Francisco-based freelancer Christopher Michel was taking aerial photos from another balloon when catastrophe struck.

The ill-fated balloon was flying over the ancient city of Luxor when it caught fire and crashed into a sugar cane field.

The casualties included French, British and Japanese tourists.

As family and friends come to terms with the loss of their loved ones, Michel relived the calm and serenity of the flight before the tragedy.

''I'm a freelance photographer and was shooting the ancient temples of Luxor from the balloon,'' Michel told News Limited.

''It was a smoky morning as the sun rose across the Nile. Incredible beauty harshly juxtaposed with terrible tragedy.

''The picture captures two of the eight balloons flying that morning.  It was taken just a few minutes before the tragedy.''

The photographer was unable to confirm whether one of the two balloons captured in the photo is the one that crashed.

Michel, who previously made a balloon excursion with an English pilot, said the Egyptian operation "didn't feel quite as professional" as that of his first voyage.

He told the BBC: "We flew over the ancient ruins. Just before landing in the cornfields, I heard an explosion and saw smoke. I think it was the balloon behind mine.

"I wasn't sure what had happened at first. It was only when we landed we heard the full extent of what happened."

"It's really, really tragic and everyone involved is in a lot of shock."

'Women don't have what it takes'

Labor Finance Minister Senator Penny Wong says she's proud to be a Senator.
Source: The Australian

SOME women just don't have the confidence to become boss, the Australian Bureau of Statistics says in its latest Australian Social Trends report.

And it controversially suggests that female politicians are drawn to the Senate because they are not as ambitious as the lower house MPs who pine to become Prime Minister.

In Federal Parliament, 38 per cent of Senators are women - compared to just 25 per cent of MPs.

''This may be due to people regarding Upper House seats in the Senate as less desirable than seats in the House of Representatives, particularly ambitious people who aim their careers towards working in the House of Representatives where government is formed,'' the ABS says.

The observation raised eyebrows yesterday, with Labor Senator Penny Wong - who is the Minister for Finance and Deregulation - declaring she was ''very proud'' to be a Senator.

''The focus should be on increasing the number of women in the Federal Parliament, not about making one chamber an indicator of a woman's ambition,'' she told News Limited.

''The Senate does important work in examining the detail of legislation and policy.''

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said she had always wanted to enter the Senate, to hold governments to account.

''I'm very proud to be a young woman in the Senate,'' she said.

''It comes with all the tough decisions about how to juggle work life and family, but I wouldn't give it up for anything.''

The ABS report says some women ''are seen to have a lack of confidence in their abilities and are less likely to put their hands up for promotion''.

''Whereas men are willing to put their hand up for a role where they may not tick some or all of the boxes, some women may only apply for the job if they feel confident they are a good fit for the job,'' it says.

The Federal Government's Workplace Gender Equality Agency director, Helen Conroy, yesterday said it was not true that men are more ambitious.

''Often it's said that women aren't as ambitious as men but that's just not right,'' she told News Limited.

''The overwhelming reason we don't have more women in leadership is the underlying cultural and structural barriers in organisations.

''Flexible work options and careers should be available to men and women so they can balance work and family life.

''This is a family issue, not a woman's problem.''

The ABS report shows that working mothers still spend twice the time as working dads in looking after the kids when they get home.

A woman in full-time work spends an average of six hours and 39 minutes each day taking care of kids - compared to three hours and 43 minutes a day for a man.

Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick yesterday said women still do the ''vast majority'' of caring for children, the disabled and the elderly.

''The social norm still is that women care and men work,'' she said.

MKR baddies cooking for kudos

Nice as pie? Not likely. MKR gatecrashers Sophia and Ashlee in the kitchen. Picture: Supplied. Source: Supplied

THEY certainly proved they can talk the talk by declaring "war" on Monday night's My Kitchen Rules, but guests were left divided as to whether or not gatecrashers Ashlee and Sophia dished up winners when finally put to the test in the latest episode.

The hot-tempered duo from New South Wales stepped into the kitchen for the first time, serving up a number of Vietnamese-inspired meals to their expectant guests.

The girls attempted to set the mood, seating their visitors with a flaming shot of absinthe - unfortunately this seemed to have the reverse effect, with Manu and Pete taking note of the "tension, anticipation and anxiety" when they walked into The Factory.

Promising to "bring it", the girls created a poached chicken salad with Asian herbs as an entree, which unfortunately failed to impress. "That dish only took me halfway to Vietnam", Steph commented.

After a lengthy wait in between meals, their main dish of shrimp and pork Vietnamese pancakes proved more successful - Manu declared they "kicked arse" - yet it was a shame the "babes" couldn't quite seem to get their pork tender enough.

Lime creme brûlée was on the menu for dessert, and after a few nearly-singed eyebrows with a monster blow torch, the pair managed to deliver their final dish for the evening unscathed.

While it was hit-and-miss with the judges, no one was more disappointed than Stefano who had "expected to dive into this pleasure of cream".

Given the showdown that ensued on Monday night around the table after Ashlee and Sophie revealed their inner brat and Angela accused the pair of having a "personality disorder", viewers tuned in expecting nothing less than an epic no-holds-barred culinary clash tonight. But, despite a few lingering scowls between the cooks and their competitors, manners were minded.

Knowing that the other teams were "coming to get them", the girls were hardly surprised with their score of 17 out of 50, but their judge's score of 47 took them to a total of 64 out of 110, pushing them to second on the leaderboard.

This meant we said goodbye to MKR's resident lovebirds, Stefano and Lisa. But that's ok, because they have a wedding to plan.

On Thursday night all teams are united and will be challenged under extreme conditions, but will the game gatecrashers stand a chance against the top teams?

Your new Merc, cheaper than a Holden

A new Commodore would be bigger, but the A-Class is cheaper and maybe just a little classier. Source: Supplied

NOW you really can have champagne on a beer budget.

And despite the $35,600 price tag, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback has more standard equipment than a $35,990 Holden Commodore SV6 sedan.

The budget-priced baby Benz, loaded with nine airbags, a rear-view camera and a crash-alert system among other standard fare, is the starkest example yet of the challenges facing local car makers.

The prices of imported cars are at record lows thanks to the sustained strength of the dollar, and Australians are living it up.

Imported cars now account for 90 per cent of new vehicles sold. A decade ago, imports represented 75 per cent of the market. Half a century ago, they represented less than half of new-car sales.

"Last week, we had the highest order intake in our 50-plus year history in Australia," said Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesman David McCarthy. "Mercedes-Benz is no longer out of reach of the ordinary Australian."

As a further sign of our changing taste in cars, last year the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan was the second-highest selling medium-size car behind the Toyota Camry and ahead of the Mazda6 and Subaru Liberty.

Mercedes typically sells about 350 cars a week, but dealer sources say this figure climbed to almost double that in the lead-up to the launch of the new model.

"Half of the buyers of our new cars have never owned a Mercedes-Benz before," McCarthy said. "That shows you they're coming from all types of cars and all walks of life."

To ensure buyers aren't scared off by high service costs, Mercedes has a fixed price servicing deal: $1400 covers all routine servicing for the first 50,000km. A Nissan Maxima V6 sedan costs almost $2000 to service over the same period.

Jill's accused killer gets VIP legal aid

Jill Meagher. Picture: Supplied. Source: Supplied

JILL Meagher's alleged killer is getting "Rolls-Royce" taxpayer-funded legal representation despite other accused criminals having their aid cut.

Legal sources have raised concerns over priority treatment for alleged rapist and killer Adrian Bayley.

He was represented by both a barrister and solicitor in at least one procedural hearing before a magistrate - which is rare under Victoria Legal Aid guidelines.

And the cash-strapped VLA has funded a solicitor to visit Mr Bayley up to twice a day since his September arrest, legal sources say.

Those fighting cost-cutting say the accused killer has been given "priority" treatment.

Under VLA's new rules, instructing solicitors are funded for trial preparations and just two half-days of trial attendances - leading to indefinite stays of three criminal cases, including a double murder, so far this year.

One senior legal insider said Mr Bayley was entitled to the best possible representation, but the VLA had a responsibility to defendants and victims of crimes to provide equal access to justice.

"They are out to compete for the corporate dollar and the media attention," the source said.

Legal sources say Adrian Bayley is receiving priority treatment.

"They have been seeing him morning and night."

Another source described Mr Bayley's legal aid as "Rolls Royce" treatment.

Jill Meagher's life in pictures

The search for Jill ends in tragedy

A VLA spokesman said it could not comment on individual aid grants.

"However, all people who receive legal aid undergo the same rigorous process of assessment for funding of their case.

"The level of service ... is based on a number of factors including the seriousness of the charge, the complexity of the case and whether they have special needs - for example, being a child, having a mental illness, an intellectual disability or an acquired brain injury."

The legal aid funding crisis prompted an urgent meeting between the VLA, the Victorian Bar, the Law Institute of Victoria and representatives of the courts yesterday.

The Herald Sun revealed a $3.1 million black hole in VLA's budget in November.

A rise in the number of cases is being blamed on extra police on the streets charging more suspects, a surge in domestic violence and an increasing incidence of breaches of intervention orders.

Law Institute of Victoria chief Michael Brett-Young said: ''We say all people should get equal representation.

Unless there is a resolution, it will certainly lead to a breakdown in the justice system. There will be more delays and this is not benefiting either the accused or those victims who are affected."

A spokesman for Attorney General Robert Clark said the VLA had its full support.

Sparkies better off working at Macca's

Electrical apprentices get less than a starter at McDonald's, a report has found. Picture: Thinkstock Source: Supplied

UNSKILLED people flipping burgers at Macca's will earn considerably more cash than first-year apprentice electricians, putting many sparkies below the poverty line.

In a submission to the upcoming Fair Work Australia Modern Award Review, the Sydney University Business School has found a electrical apprentices are only getting $7.50 an hour while an up-start at McDonald's will get $14.20.

The chronically low wages are forcing many apprentices to go elsewhere for work because they simply can't afford to make ends meet - especially if they are unsupported and living out of home.

Apprentices are also getting older, with the proportion aged 25 years or over going up from 8 per cent to 26 per cent between 1996-2006.

Report author, Sydney University Professor John Buchanan, said electrical apprentices are massively underpaid and their wages haven't been adjusted for a long time.

''If they are dependent on awards they are better off at Macca's,'' he says.

''When we got down to the gory detail I was surprised how low the pay was. I knew they were low but not that low.''

A first year apprentice under the Electrical Power Industry Modern Award gets $288.37 per week, while at Macca's they get $540.14.

''The prospects of living independently away from the parental home, even at the meagre low cost standard is beyond the reach of even second year apprentices,'' the report said.

It has called for a lift in the minimum wages and recognition of prior learning and employment for older first year apprentices who are coming from other industries.

Third-year electrician Tom Gorrie changed employers in his first year after he realising he would have had no chance of supporting his wife and child.

''When I first started I was on the award which was $7 an hour or $270 a week and there was no way I could survive on that,'' he said.

''It was pretty hard to make ends meet and I had to stay at home. I was pretty lucky I could be at home.

''If they were to pay first-years more then it would probably encourage more people to get into it. Once you get over the first years it is OK.''

Flying servo for pilots under the pump

THE two F/A-18 Hornet fighters approach the 27m-long hoses trailing from the wings of the Airbus airliner like hungry calves seeking out a mother's teat.

High above Lakes Entrance in East Gippsland yesterday afternoon, the latest inclusion to the RAAF's inventory, the KC-30A multirole tanker transport, demonstrated how Australia was now able to project air power around the globe.

As the hose and drogue swayed in the turbulence, the fighter jets, from 77 Squadron at Williamtown in NSW, nosed in for what 24-year-old Hornet pilot Flying officer Brent Jones from Lake Macquarie in NSW described as a "tricky" job.

"Most things about flying a fighter are fast and reactive and based on adrenaline, but tanking is slow and deliberate," Flying Officer Jones said.

A fighter pilot delicately positions an F/A-18 Hornet for refuelling.

As the fighter edges forward towards the moving basket with the pilot "walking" the throttles to keep movement to a minimum, the jet's probe gently plugs in to the basket. There are red, amber and green lights fitted to the hose canister to let the pilot know when all is well. In five minutes they can transfer 2500 kg of fuel.

Meanwhile, in the cockpit of the modified Airbus A330 passenger jet, the two pilots fly a smooth pattern and watch proceedings live on a video screen.

Flying Officer Simone Batchelor was born and raised in Germany and came to Australia as a 19-year-old backpacker and she never left.

One fighter locks on for refuelling as another holds position in formation with the tanker. Picture: Alex Coppel

Now an Australian citizen and married to an RAAF fast jet pilot, she joined the air force in 2008 with the aim of being a fighter pilot herself.

Like many graduates, she didn't make the grade for fast jets and was assigned to 33 Squadron for the introduction of the $2 billion KC-30A fleet.

"This is a fantastic capability," Flying Officer Batchelor said.

"There is no other aircraft that can carry 270 passengers and 109 tonnes of fuel to refuel other jets."

Air Commander Australia Air-Vice Marshal Mel Hupfeld was on board the tanker yesterday and he was ecstatic about the new capability.

The former fighter pilot and Iraq war combat veteran said the most challenging tanking job was at night in bad weather.

"Turbulence causes the basket to oscillate and at night there is no horizon line so you must stay in formation with the tanker," he said.

Air force chief Air Marshal Geoff Brown describes the KC-30A as a "flexible use asset" that will give the RAAF global reach.

Due to problems with the refuelling boom mounted to the tail of the aircraft it remains on the government's list of projects of concern. It should be fixed this year.

  • Couple bought property for $12,000
  • Could be worth millions

IT'S been a 42-year wait but the decision to rezone Badgerys Creek land in Sydney's west would be like winning the lottery for Harry and Brigette Green.

The couple, in their 60s, bought their 11-acre property for $12,000 in 1970.

But with the land around what could be Sydney's second airport due to be rezoned from residential to industrial, the Greens said their home would be worth millions.

"It's been a waiting game for 40 years, this airport,'' Mr Green said.

That will make up for the $250,000 they lost when they sold their other Badgerys Creek property 20 years ago.

"Nobody wanted to buy in this area after everyone heard about the plans for the airport,'' he said.

The Daily Telegraph revealed yesterday the planning department was moving ahead with the controversial rezoning, which stands to make businessman Ron Medich and his developer brother Roy up to $400 million.

Planning Minister Brad Hazzard said he did not know who owned land and the decision was about getting western Sydney moving: "Rezoning for employment lands adjacent to the land reserved 20 years ago for a possible airport would work well for western and southwestern Sydney, irrespective of whether or not the federal government ever decides to proceed with the development of an airport.''

Chris Brown, an aviation capacity taskforce member, said the land could be rezoned industrial and still allow a second airport.

Lost backpacker 'playing hide and seek'

A British Backpacker who nearly died in the Queensland outback denies his ordeal was a Bear Grylls-like stunt gone wrong.

SAM Woodhead has admitted he was "stupid'' to become lost in the Queensland Outback.

Speaking to Channel 10 News, Mr Woodhead said he "stupidly'' decided to take a shortcut and jumped over a fence before bashing through thick scrub when he realised he was lost.

"After four or five hours of going through that I realised I was pretty much in the dead middle of a forest type thing and was struggling a bit so I put my sleeping - I put my bag down to use it as a sleeping bag and try to wait 'til morning and then decide what to do from there,'' he said.

He said the contact lens fluid that he survived on acted as a "placebo'' to boost his confidence, while thoughts of his family, a glass of pink grapefruit and barley punch and a Callipo icecream kept him going.

"In the first day I could see I had lost weight, my trousers weren't fitting anymore and...my hands started to get really small and frail after the first day.

Mr Woodhead told Channel 10 that people could "think what they like'' about his version of events.

"People can choose not to believe it and I don't have a problem with that,'' he said.

The station managers of Upshot Station and the hosts of Sam Woodhead have spoken of their "disappointment" at the teenager's naive behaviour during his stay.

Tanya and Barry Dawson employed the 18-year-old at their station, 114km south of Longreach, to help them maintain the property that had recently been struggling with severe drought.

"It's just a shame that someone that's supposed to have survival training ... could just leave the house and disregard the basics that everyone is told," Tanya Dawson said.

"I think we're just going to have to accept he was that naive to leave the house without telling anyone."

COPYCAT: Rescuers suspect Bear Grylls fan of Man v Wild stunt

The Dawsons have not heard from Mr Woodhead since he went missing and say the station would no longer employ backpackers.

SEARCH crews look for Sam Woodhead last week.

The Dawsons also passed on their thanks to their community, who arrived in droves to help in the search.

But the helpful neighbours have also begun questioning the motives of the British backpacker as details fail to "add up".

Longreach local Stephen Parker said the rescue crews had organised a tight search grid that should not have missed Mr Woodhead repeatedly.

"If he's had survival training he broke every rule in the book...we're reasonably sure he was playing hide and seek," he said.

Mr Woodhead was ultimately found 5km-6km away from Upshot Station after an EMQ Rescue helicopter crew caught sight of his rugby shorts waving in the wind.

John te Kloot, the owner of a nearby property, flew his Cessna light aircraft with spotters during the search and said four helicopters had already flown over the area before Sam was found.

He said the questions being asked by locals were "patently obvious" given their knowledge of the land.

"Firstly, we're so happy to have him found and secondly, the police did a very good job. But there are some questions he should come back and answer," he said.

Neighbours Adrian Roots, Norman Philp and Mac McClymont have all echoed the sentiment.

"We were surprised it took us so long to find him in the end, there was so much air traffic it's unbelievable we didn't find him...that's why there's so much speculation," Mr McClymont said.

'I ate raw animal bits in sex-driven cult'

Blanca Castro, victim of the sect 'Defenders of Christ', says she was forced to participate in sexual orgies and eat raw animal organs. Picture: AFP/ Ronaldo Schemidt Source: AFP

A SECT named Defenders of Christ that was broken up in Mexico last month forced women to participate in orgies, discouraged baths and made people eat raw animal organs, the wife of a cult leader said.

Mexican immigration authorities raided the sex-driven sect's house in the northern state of Nuevo Laredo on January 25, rounding up 14 foreigners, including its Spanish leader Ignacio Gonzalez de Arriba, and 10 Mexicans.

Gonzalez de Arriba saw himself as the reincarnation of Christ and used the Internet to recruit adherents, offering classes on "bio-programming," alternative health care, psychic powers and sexuality, according to the Victim Support Network, which helps people who flee sects.

"They broke you down, making you even doubt your own name," Blanca Castro, who was married to a Venezuelan leader of the Defenders of Christ, told a news conference.

"They made me eat raw animal organs. And you know what? When you're starving you'll eat anything," the Mexican woman said, adding that sect leaders told followers that hygiene was a waste of time.

Castro, who married Losanger Jose Arenas Segovia in 2009, said she was raped, forced into group sex sessions, locked up and roughed up. She lived with the sect for 10 months in 2010 until she escaped and made her way to Peru.

Gonzalez de Arriba is being investigated over allegation that minors were forced to participate in sexual acts.

The Argentina-based Victim Support Network said that the sect was present in 80 countries, with 4,000 victims in Mexico and 10,000 in the rest of the world.

The Internet classes began in 2004, charging people between $1,300 and $130,000, the network said.

Those willing to shell out the maximum fee secured the title of "apostle of Christ" within the sect, whose estate in northern Mexico was dubbed "The Monastery." Once there, they were tasked with recruiting new followers.

"I saw them arriving from Chile, Bolivia, Spain, with suitcases and the money that was demanded in cash," Castro said, showing copies of emails from sect leaders telling how much the victims had to pay.

The sect's followers were treated with cruelty, including humiliation and psychological torture, the network said.

Author battered by royal backlash

Hilary Mantel, the Booker Prize winning novelist, launched a scathing attack on the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton during her recent London Review of Books lecture.

BRITAIN'S media is in a spin after criticism of their darling, the Duchess of Cambridge, by a famed author.

Hilary Mantel, who won two Man Booker Prizes for her fictionalised retelling of life in Henry VIII's court, is now experiencing her own clash with the ambitions and eccentricities of those who consider themselves part of the royal court.

And adding to the controversy, a notorious group of web jokers have got in on the act.

Mantel's speech, in which she calls Kate Middleton a "shop window mannequin" with a "plastic smile" whose only purpose is to breed, has now been given the Taiwanese animation treatment, with a new video released by NMAtv.

Meanwhile, not only are predictable titles such as The Sun and The Daily Mail up in arms about the apparent criticism, even more staid and respectable names such as The Telegraph and The Independent have waded into the furore.

The Duchess of Cambridge listens to a speech by a resident of Hope House. Picture: Mary Turner/ WPA Pool/Getty Images

"A bizarre rant", The Sun screams. "Astonishing and venemous" The Daily Mail declares.

The Telegraph jumped on Prime Minister David Cameron's response in which he labels Mantel as"completely misguided and completely wrong". Joe Little, the editor of Majesty Magazine, was quoted as saying that Mantel's comments were "incredibly unkind."

But The Independent has bucked the trend by coming out in defence of the author, stating that anyone who actually listens to her speech would never leap to the same conclusions. It was a venom-free cry from the heart about the impact of media attention on celebrities, it ruled.

READ THE FULL TRANSCRIPT HERE

The double Booker Brize winning author, 60, faces the criticism for declaring the duchess had neither the personality of William's mother Diana nor the presence of historical heavyweight Anne Boleyn.

Britain's media has focused on a few lines from the lecture given two weeks ago at the British Museum and reprinted this week in the London Review of Books literary journal, in which Mantel said the Duchess of Cambridge appeared "machine-made" when she first emerged in public.

"Kate Middleton, as she was, appeared to have been designed by a committee and built by craftsmen, with a perfect plastic smile and the spindles of her limbs hand-turned and gloss-varnished," Mantel said.

Mantel said 31-year-old Catherine had gone from being a "jointed doll on which certain rags are hung" to someone whose "only point and purpose" was to have children, according to the novelist.

Before marrying second-in-line to the throne William in 2011 and falling pregnant last year, Kate was a "shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own, entirely defined by what she wore."

"These days she is a mother-to-be, and draped in another set of threadbare attributions. Once she gets over being sick, the press will find that she is radiant," she said.

The novelist compared Kate unfavourably to Boleyn, the "power player" who married 16th-century English king Henry VIII before he had her beheaded, and to Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

"She appears precision-made, machine-made, so different from Diana whose human awkwardness and emotional incontinence showed in her every gesture."

Catherine's baby bump was on show when the Duchess visited Hope House. Pictures: AFP/Getty Images

A spokeswoman for William and Catherine declined to comment when contacted.

In many ways, Mantel had the final say in the very speech that caused such an uproar: "We don't cut off the heads of royal ladies these days, but we do sacrifice them, and we did memorably drive one to destruction a scant generation ago. History makes fools of us, makes puppets of us, often enough. But it doesn't have to repeat itself... I'm not asking for censorship. I'm not asking for pious humbug and smarmy reverence. I'm asking us to back off and not be brutes."

Mantel is the only woman to win the Man Booker Price twice, claiming the first in 2009 for Wolf Hall, the opening part of her trilogy about Henry VIII's adviser Thomas Cromwell.

The second installment, Bring Up The Bodies, won the award last year.

Kate shows off the latest in maternity fashion.

Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cambridge has shown off her baby bump for the first time as she did charity work at a women's addiction centre.

It follows the publication of unauthorised pictures of the duchess in a bikini, showing her bump, which is said to have angered the royal family.

This time though Catherine was elegantly dressed in a grey wrap, above-the-knee dress by Max Mara Studio, complete with a ruched waist and attached waist tie.

Hope House, in the southwest suburb of Clapham, was one of the first charities that the duchess became a patron of. It is designed as a safe place for women to recover from substance dependence and receive additional support for other compulsive disorders.

Sifting through the Pistorius speculation

Oscar Pistorius' attorney says the famed athlete and his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp were "deeply in love" on the first days of his bail hearing. Deborah Gembara reports.

  • Oscar Pistorius's girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp shot dead
  • Olympic sprinter charged with her murder
  • Pistorius awaiting to hear if he will get bail
  • Lurid speculation on what really happened

OSCAR Pistorius will find out later tonight if he will be granted bail after he was charged with murdering Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day.

Last night prosecutors outlined their case against the Olympic sprinter and Pistorius submitted an affidavit, giving his version of events the night Steenkamp, 29, died.

The case - involving the inspirational double-amputee athlete and his high-profile, model girlfriend - has attracted global attention and prompted lurid speculation on exactly what went on that night in the luxury villa in one of South Africa's most prestigious gated communities.

Here we sort the facts from the unfounded allegations.

What we know

Reeva Steenkamp, a magazine pin-up and fledgling TV star, was shot, apparently in the bathroom of Pistorius's home in the early hours of February 14.

The toilet where Reeva Steenkamp was allegedly shot. Picture: Getty

There were four shots fired through the room's locked door.  Steenkamp was hit and died of her wounds.

A 9mm pistol was seized by police at the scene.

Pistorius, 26, was charged with murder on Friday, February 15 and made his first court appearance later that day, where the hearing was adjourned until Tuesday.

He told his relatives that he thought it was an intruder in his bathroom and that he shot through the door out of fear.

Police allege that there was no intruder and that Pistorius deliberately shot Steenkamp.

What the police say

A police officer holds a gun that was allegedly used in the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp, the girlfriend of Olympian athlete Oscar Pistorius, at the Boschkop police station east of Pretoria. Picture: AP

In their affadvit at the bail hearing the police said: "The door to the toilet was broken open from the outside - the only reasonable inference being that it was locked and could not be opened.

"(Pistorius) gained access to the toilet and carried the deceased downstairs where he walked into security guards. The main door of the house was not locked.

"(Pistorius) told his sister that he thought it was a burglar. We argue that this was part of the pre-planning to use as a defence.

"Why would a burglar lock himself into a toilet? There may have been an argument earlier between (Pistorius) and the deceased. ..."

The speculation and untested allegations

Within hours of the killing, speculation -  some wild, most of it attributed only to unnamed police close to the case - as to what happened inside the house was being reported on news websites around the world.

Police said they had been called to incidents at the Pistorius's home in the past to deal with "domestic incidents".

Reports suggested Pistorius allegedly called friends saying he had "shot my baba", before police were called.

Then came sensational reports of a bloodied cricket bat being found at the scene, along with steroids. The sources were "unnamed police officers" close to the case.

There was even suggestion Steenkamp's skull had been crushed.

The mention of steroids prompted theories about "roid rage" and that the paralympian had killed Steenkamp in a jealous fury.

Police seized Steenkamp's iPad and mobile phones from the murder scene and said they were investigating text messages for a possible motive.

Steenkamp's "close friendship" with Springbok rugby union star Francois Hougaard came under the spotlight after Nelson Mandela's private secretary posted this message: "Have you heard rumours about a rugby player alleged to be involved somehow? We all have."

Another police source told South African media that investigators had retrieved evidence of sexual activity from Pistorius's bedroom. "They are being analysed for DNA to determine who they belong to and whether they originate from the night of the killing."

Questions of character

Pistorius's apparent fascination with guns was discussed. A New York Times interview was widely quoted where Pistorius spoke of his love of weapons.

An ex-girlfriend's mother said he was "reckless with guns" and she was glad her daughter was no longer with him.

The athlete's past relationships - usually with high-profile models - came under scrutiny after an interview ex-girlfriend Samantha Taylor gave in November was widely quoted. In it she said Pistorius "was not who people thought he was" and described him as a womaniser.

It remains to be seen if any of these claims will be tested in court.

14 injured, 3 missing in Kansas blast

AUTHORITIES were bringing in heavy equipment to remove blackened rubble and aid their search for a missing employee of a popular Kansas City restaurant destroyed by a gas explosion and the ensuing inferno.

Seven people injured in the evening explosion at JJ's restaurant remained in hospital Wednesday, including two whose conditions were critical. At least seven others were treated and released.

One of two people first feared to be missing was later found receiving treatment at a hospital. But a woman who worked at JJ's and who was seen there before the blast was still missing, and Mayor Sly James stressed that finding her would remain the primary focus of rescue efforts.

"Our main concern right now is the fact that we have a missing individual whose family is very much in anguish about that," Mr James said Wednesday morning.

"We need to resolve that problem. There is some hope in light of the fact that last night there were two people missing and we found one."

Fire Chief Paul Berardi declined to release any information about the missing woman except that she worked at JJ's.

The blast happened at around 6pm on Tuesday (Wednesday morning Australia time) when the dinner crowd would have been filing into JJ's and the many other restaurants in the upscale Country Club Plaza shopping and dining district.

Witnesses reported that there was a strong smell of gas in the area before the blast, and Missouri Gas Energy, which supplies the area, said in a statement that "early indications are that a contractor doing underground work struck a natural gas line."

Cadaver dogs searched the rubble Tuesday night but did not find anything, so heavy equipment was brought in at dawn to remove several feet of heavy debris, Mr James said.

Workers were rushing to remove the debris and investigate the cause because a major winter storm was forecast to hit the area Wednesday evening, Mr James said.

"We have a major storm coming in this evening," Mr James said. "We're going to work diligently to get in (to the blast site) to get underneath that weather."

Mr Berardi said firefighters were called about 5.15pm local time with a report that a construction worker had hit a gas line near the restaurant. Firefighters conferred with MGE workers and left the scene, and the explosion occurred about 45 minutes later. He said the cause of the gas leak and fire is still unknown.

"Once we confirm the victim is or isn't inside the building, that part of the investigation will continue," Mr Berardi said.

Firemen and utility workers inspect the scene of the huge explosion.

JJ's had managed - until Tuesday night - to survive in the shadow a large construction project that has been under way across the narrow, one-way street for seven years. The work had complicated access to the street-corner restaurant, and a server needed hospital treatment in 2006 after she was struck by a rock sent flying by blasting for excavation of the construction site.

It was not known whether the contractor said by MGE to have been doing underground work was connected to the construction project.

Dr. John Verstraete, who works at Plaza Physicians Group next door to JJ's, told The Kansas City Star that several employees of the office smelled gas for several hours Tuesday afternoon. The smell grew stronger through the day, and a gas company employee entered the medical office just before 6pm recommending that it be evacuated, he said.

The blast shattered windows in some businesses at a small strip mall nearby, and residents of some neighboring apartments reported minor interior damage. One side of a brick apartment building that shares the block with JJ's appeared to have been scorched.

Jim Ligon, a JJ's bartender, said he wasn't working Tuesday night but started getting texts and calls from co-workers minutes after the explosion. He said the incident happened during the peak of weekday happy hour, when there is typically anywhere from 15 to 45 people in the bar area as well as three to five tables of diners at the restaurant.

"JJ's has a small staff, a family feel," said Ligon, 45, of Kansas City, Missouri. "You see the same 100 people all the time - a bar and restaurant for regulars. We're just really hoping we come out of here OK in terms of injuries."

The restaurant consistently received high ratings from contributors to Zagat's restaurant guides, both for its food and its wine list of hundreds of selections.

The shopping area was established in 1922 by J.C. Nichols. Based on the architecture of Seville, Spain, it includes retail, restaurants, apartments and offices.

Japanese ram Sea Shepherd ships

The Anti-whaling group Sea-Shepherd says its had two of its ships rammed by Japanese whalers.

ANTI-whaling group Sea Shepherd says a Japanese whaling ship has rammed its two protest ships, and one, the Bob Barker is taking on water.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's Captain Paul Watson, in a posting on his Facebook page this afternoon, claimed the Nisshin Maru had rammed both the Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker "but both vessels continue to hold their positions. The Bob Barker is taking on water in their engine room''.

Bob Brown, Sea Shepherd director and former Greens leader, called on the federal government to send the navy to Antarctic waters.

Anti-whaling group tries to stop Japanese whalers bringing on ship a harpooned whale for slaughter. Julie Noce reports.

"This is a gross breach of international law by the Japanese,'' Dr Brown told reporters in Melbourne today.

"I'm calling the Australian government to dispatch naval vessels now - not just to film the slaughter of the whales by the Antarctic fleet but to restore international law.

The Australian Greens joined their former leader, Dr Brown, in calling on the government to quickly condemn the violence and send a navy boat to the area.

Greens marine spokesperson Rachel Siewert said she couldn't believe the inaction by the government.

A previous collision between Japanese whalers and the Sea shepherd Conservation Society.

"The government has the capacity to do far more to end the threat of whaling in Australian waters, but they remain reluctant to step up to the plate,'' Senator Siewert said in a statement late this afternoon.

The latest incident was in the Southern Ocean, north of the Australian Casey Research Station.

Speaking from aboard the Steve Irwin, Watson told 3 News the Bob Barker, with 38 crew aboard, was hit a number of times as they tried to stop the Nisshin Maru from refuelling, which he says is illegal in the Southern Ocean.

''(It) has lost power, toppled the main mast, smashed up the deck.''

A mayday has been issued but the crew had managed to stop water from coming in, he said.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is responsible for responding to maydays in that part of the ocean. The authority is in the process of responding.

Capt Watson said the Japanese ship had also struck the Korean-owned fuel tanker, the Sun Laurel.

The Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research could not be reached for immediate comment, but last week it said the Bob Barker had tried to sabotage Japanese research vessel Nisshin Maru and Yushin Maru No.2 as they tried to transfer a whale between the two ships.

The confrontation comes the same month the US Supreme Court upheld an injunction ordering Sea Shepherd to keep away from Japanese whaling ships in the Southern Ocean.

Meet Europe's most racist fans

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 13 Februari 2013 | 23.26

Zenit St Petersburg's fans celebrate victory. Source: AP

THE true face of Zenit St Petersburg, concealed from me for a week, walked in on his tiptoes and hidden under a hoodie.

A 23-year-old, out-of-work car mechanic with "34" tattooed on his arm - the shirt number worn by Vladimir Bystrov, a right winger no less - was willing to break the strict code of silence among the hardcore fans of Europe's most racist club.

He spoke fast in Russian, occasionally making a cut-throat gesture with his scarred hands.

He predicted a hostile atmosphere inside the Petrovsky Stadium for Liverpool's Europa League match against Zenit tomorrow, with racism at its ugly core. "There may well be monkey noises aimed at Liverpool's black payers," said our informant, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Monkey noises do happen. There are thousands of fans in the ground - some could make the noises, some will not. Some might throw on a banana skin, some will not."

Those chill words, uttered on the top floor of the Galeria shopping mall just off the Nevsky Prospect - the high street of this grand city "made out of nothing by a Tsar who wanted everything" - ended a five-day search for a real Ultra.

It is absolutely right to say we do not want black players. We want Zenit to be different. To retain our identity.

All week I asked where I could meet one and was told to try the SBG bar, which is painted in the white, dark blue and light blue colours of Zenit down to the urinal pipes. But on the several nights I called in, there was only the odd unremarkable customer sipping beer and dragging on those Russian cigarettes that grab passive smokers by the throat. The trail was running as cold as the water that turned into ice blocks at the end of the drains just above St Petersburg's slushy pavements.

But now we had our informant and he went gabbling on.

"Our fans will find any Liverpool hooligans, follow them and start fights with them," he said, his blue eyes fidgeting. "There are about 300 of our fans who want to fight.

"We will not look to kill anyone. There will be no bottles or knives — just fighting. It is the normal football culture."

Fans of Zenit St. Petersburg football team destroy a goal after their team won against Dynamo Moscow during a Russian Premier League match. Source: AFP

Our informant, an orphan, is a member of Landscrona, the club's largest and most fanatical fan group. These 5,000 or so fanatics sit in the "virage" - four sectors at one end of the ground. They all broadly subscribe to Selection 12, Landscrona's manifesto issued last December calling on Zenit club officials not to sign black or gay players.

That document was written by - or certainly with the involvement of - Landscrona leaders Alexander Rumyantsev and Ruslan Druyma. They both refused to talk to me, so it was left to our informant to expand on the group's controversial policy.

"It is absolutely right to say we do not want black players," he said. "Spartak Moscow have black players. Many teams in Russia do. We want Zenit to be different. To stand out. To retain our identity."

I asked him about Selection 12's objection to homosexuals. He laughed and shook his head, saying: "It is impossible to imagine a gay player coming here. Totally impossible. The club know we object to black and gay players and they cannot go against what we want because they are concerned with making money.

"But it is not just black players; it is as much about Muslims. People, including Muslims, think we won wars because of our superior numbers, but that is not right. It was more about the spirit of Russia. The Muslims come to Russia and act in inappropriate ways. They have wives in their home countries, which are not developed, and more women here. They bring all their traditions over with them. And drugs - heroin.

Zenit St. Petersburg's supporters react after defeating Rangers in the UEFA Cup final. Source: AP

"They join the police and get into high positions. They start to bully non-Muslims, the real Russians.

"The last player we had from those parts was Sargis Hovsepyan (an Armenian full back) and he left in 2003. We do not want that sort of person in our team."

There are around seven million Muslims in Russia, with an estimated 20 million expected by 2050. They are coming over the border as well as reproducing faster than the indigenous population. Most people I spoke to on the street at least partly shared the extremists' anti-Muslim convictions.

But the fans' logic is muddled because they have two non-pure white imports, the Brazilian Hulk and the Portuguese Bruno Alves, in their team. They accept them but threw a banana at Roberto Carlos, the former Brazil defender, before a league game against Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011. The club were fined £7,500, a mere inconvenience given that their £50m backing from Gazprom, the world's biggest extractor of natural gas, makes them the richest club in Russia.

The list of Zenit's race crimes is extensive. Marseille complained of their players being abused in March 2008. Later that season, former Zenit manager Dick Advocaat admitted: "I would sign anyone, but the fans don't like black players." Supporters have worn Ku Klux Klan masks. Hardliners make Nazi-style salutes on the terraces.

Dmitry Dubrovsky, a campaigner for the anti-racism organisation SOVA, said he was attacked six years ago by Ultras after delivering a seminar on Neo-Nazism. "The very active, very aggressive core, politically orientated, became a serious force in the late 90s," he told me. "Football is a political entity post-Soviet era.

"These real 'hools' fight. They model themselves on Millwall. Many of them are educated, upper middle class. They are a white supremacy group. The hardcore number about 100."

He brought up Brian Idowu, a St Petersburg-born player with a Nigerian father who was developed in Zenit's youth structure. In 2010, he was moved to Amkar Perm, another Russian team. Was that because he is black?

Dubrovsky insists his colour was key but others say he just was not good enough. Aged 20, Idowu has made one senior appearance for his new team.

Racism is common across Russia, surely because the planet's largest country was for so long behind the iron curtain. Foreigners stood out even more in the Soviet era than now. I have seen only three black people in my week here. Attitudes have not kept pace with the west.

What would largely be Russia's problem is given greater relevance because the 2018 World Cup will be staged here. So what is being done? The clubs pay lip service to anti-racism projects. UEFA and FIFA are too slow to condemn. What of Zenit's most famous fan since Shostakovich, the Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev? I contacted his office to ask what he thought of Selection 12 and how he intended to combat the Ultras.

The response: "The behaviour of fan club representatives as well as their politically incorrect declarations must first of all remain on the conscience of the fans themselves. Fans must try to filter out those who behave in an improper way and disgrace the name of the organisation.

"The fans who demonstrate their aggressive position usually come to the stadium not to watch a game but to start riots. Violations of the law by the fans must lead to severe punishment, up to life-long bans from attending sports events."

Yes, he used what by the standards of these official pronouncements are strong words. But why not invoke criminal law if Russia is serious about beating the racists? The answer appears obvious.

As for Mr Medvedev, he will not be in the Petrovsky Stadium tomorrow evening. He has a prior engagement in Siberia.

Aussies want Pell to be next pope

Papal contender? ... Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney / Pic: Britta Campion Source: The Daily Telegraph

AUSTRALIANS are urging Cardinal George Pell to throw his mitre into the ring and become the nation's first pope.

But the bookies still think the 71-year-old Victorian needs divine intervention to land the top job.

With Benedict XVI retiring on February 28, there's a vacancy in the Vatican as God's right hand man - and some Aussies want Cardinal Pell to fill out an application.

In his own words: The Pope's resignation

Lightning bolt strikes The Vatican

The Punch: Knowing when to go a God-given skill

The Punch: Benedict's complicated legacy

Popes who stepped down

The process of choosing a new Pope

The hashtag #pellforpope has become reasonably popular on Twitter as a number of social media users back the Cardinal's candidacy and begin imagining what it would be like to have a first-ever Aussie Pope.

"The white smoke'll just be the barbie," one tweeted, referring to the smoke that shoots from the Sistine Chapel once a new pontiff is selected after the secret Conclave ballot.

A spoof George Pell Twitter account added: "The first Australian saint - now the first Australian pope. George's a shoe-in for the red shoes. Ozzy Ozzy Ozzy!".

While Cardinal George Pell is considered a $41 outsider, observers said yesterday he was "not without a chance" to replace the 85-year-old Pontiff, who is stepping down because of ill health.

A senior church member says Australian Catholics will be surprised to learn Pope Benedict XVI is resigning.

"If it were to happen it would be an extraordinary tribute to the church in Australia," commentator Professor Des Cahill said yesterday.

World Youth Day 2008 ambassador Ron Delezio reflected the mood of many grass-roots Catholics when he said it would be a great day for Australia if Cardinal Pell became pope: "The good thing about George is that he is a fit man and he stays on the line of the Catholic church.

"He is the equal of any of the cardinals over there (in Rome)."

But critics of the 71-year-old Archbishop of Sydney, including former NSW premier and World Youth Day organiser Kristina Keneally, believe Cardinal Pell has little chance of becoming pontiff: "Australians will remember Benedict's papacy fondly for Saint Mary MacKillop but he failed to deal with the sex abuse scandal.

"George Pell's response here has been directly out of the Vatican's play book. He will struggle to present a credible case to be part of the solution."

Cardinal Pell, who will travel to Rome to take part in the election of the new pope, yesterday said Pope Benedict's resignation had surprised him but he expected to return to Sydney after the vote.

"I was shocked by the timing (of the resignation)," Cardinal Pell said.

"He'd always acknowledged this was a possibility. It is the decision of a humble man, an honest man, who wants the best for the church."

Cardinal Pell said it was a "misconception" that Benedict did not do enough to deal with the sex abuse scandal in the church: "Publicly he said he was sorry and he met with victims. He wasn't pushing anything under the carpet.

"We will have to see who the new pope is. Every pope represents a change. Whether it will be seen as a new era is a question we can't answer."

American commentator Father Robert Sirico nominated Cardinal Marc Ouellet from Canada, and Cardinal Angelo Scola, the Archbishop of Milan, as leading contenders - "or even Cardinal George Pell from Australia".

There is also speculation the next pope could be African - with Cardinal Peter Turkson from Ghana and Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria receiving support.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard told parliament yesterday the announcement marked a historic moment: "Many Australians saw Pope Benedict during his visit here for the Church's World Youth Day in 2008 and I am sure many members remember the scenes and the crowds on that visit.

"Thousands of others travelled to Rome in 2010 to see him declare Mother Mary MacKillop as our nation's first saint; that was a time of jubilation across the nation. They will miss him."

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, who studied to be a priest in the 1980s, said he understood the Pope's reasoning in deciding to resign.

"I suspect part of this Pope's decision is he was close to his predecessor and did see the impact of a visibly declining Pope on the functioning of the church," Mr Abbott said.Tim Fischer, Australia's first ambassador to the Holy See and a former deputy prime minister, said the resignation was not unexpected.

Catholics outside the Vatican and papal aides alike reacted with surprise Monday to Pope Benedict's announcement that he will step down from the papacy. Mana Rabiee reports.

"In 2010, in the middle of my posting, the Pope said 'yes' he could resign and in certain circumstances it would be his duty to resign," Mr Fischer told The Daily Telegraph.

Pope Benedict's momentous decision to step down surprises Catholics in Australia and Asia, with some saying they support his decision. Lindsey Parietti reports.

Footage shows St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican being struck by lightning just hours after Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation.

How radiologists missed a gorilla in a CT scan

Most qualified radiologists could not see the gorilla planted in this lung scan. Picture: Trafton Drew, Melissa Vo, and Jeremy Wolfe/Psychological Science Magazine Source: Supplied

WHAT can you see in this CT scan? Look closely. Especially in the top right hand corner. If you're not seeing a gorilla, don't worry because you're not alone.

According to the results of a new study, 83 per cent of radiologists failed to spot the animal, despite looking at the scan at least four times, on average.

Here's how the experiment worked, according to CBS News.

The 24 qualified radiologists were given lung CT scans, which each had about 10 nodules (abnormal spots), and were asked to find anything strange on the scans.

On the last one, the dancing gorilla - about 48 times the size of an average nodule - was placed in the scan.

The radiologists found the correct nodules 55 per cent of the time. But only 20 of them saw the gorilla, despite scrolling past it 4.3 times, on average.

"Researchers also determined by eye-tracking that radiologists spent 5.8 seconds looking at the scan with the gorilla, and out of the 20 radiologists who did not see the gorilla, 12 had looked directly at it," CBS reported.

Once the radiologists had been asked if they could see the gorilla, they could all spot it in the scan.

Apparently the radiologists were experiencing "inattentional blindness", which is a psychological phenomenon where when we're focussed on a certain task and our brains only register a specific part of what we see.

"And that makes it possible to not notice strange and usual things that might be in plain sight," CBS said.

Sewage everywhere as passengers sleep on deck

Cruise ship passengers has told of the horrific condition on board the stricken cruise ship Carnival Triumph

PASSENGERS on board the Carnival Triumph have reportedly dragged their mattresses onto the ship's open deck to stay cool and avoid putrid smells.

The cruise ship was floating aimlessly about 240 kilometres off the Yucatan Peninsula since a fire erupted in the aft engine room early Sunday, knocking out the ship's propulsion system. Nobody was injured and the fire was extinguished. The ship has been operating on backup generator power since the incident and is being pulled back to port in Alabama.

It's not the first time something like this has happened on board a Carnival ship.

Do you know someone on board? Let us know at news@news.com.au

Carnival spokesperson Vance Gulliksen told AFP the "overall mood with guests is good under the circumstances and guests are making the most of the situation".

But that "situation" is quite dire according to some first-hand accounts.

Passengers claim sewage is sloshing around flooded rooms and hallways, there are long lines for food and the smell of this ship is overwhelming.

The Carnival Triumph is adrift off the coast of Mexico after an engine fire. Picture: Carnival.

"It's disgusting. It's the worst thing ever," passenger Ann Barlow told CNN.

Barlow's husband Toby said there was "sewage running down the walls and floors", passengers were asked to defecate in bags and urinate in showers due to the lack of functioning toilets.

"The odour is so bad, people are getting sick and they're throwing up everywhere," Brent Nutt, whose wife is aboard the ship, said.

"The water pipes on the ship are breaking, toilets are over flowing and there's faeces on the floor."

Mr Nutt said when his wife first called him, she feared for her life.

"She was crying and all she could say was that she didn't want to die. She said the ship was leaning pretty bad over to the side and that's all she could think about was that they were all going to die.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Mowlam, 63, said his 37-year-old son Rob Mowlam, who is aboard the ship told him by phone the lack of ventilation had made it too hot to sleep inside. He said Rob and his new bride - they got married onboard on Saturday - have seen many passengers set up camp on the ocean liner's decks and in its common areas.

"He said up on deck it looks like a shanty town, with sheets, almost like tents, mattresses, anything else they can pull to sleep on,'" Mowlam, 63, said.

Mr Gulliksen said the ship now had running water and some of the toilets are now working. Conditions are improving.

"We have been told that there is running water in the cabins, albeit cold water, so guests are able to shower. Some toilets are operational in the public areas and some cabins," Mr Gulliksen said.

"There was a period last night that the toilets were down but technicians were able to get some of them back on line this morning," he said.

"We're in constant contact with the ship and have been told that overall mood with guests is good under the circumstances and guests are making the most of the situation," Mr Gulliksen said.

Carnival Cruise Lines CEO, Gerry Cahill said all guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund for the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

"We're terribly sorry for the inconvenience, discomfort, and frustration our guests are feeling.

"We know they expected a fantastic vacation, and clearly that is not what they received. Our shipboard and shoreside teams are working around the clock to care for our guests and get them home safely."

"No one here from Carnival is happy about the conditions onboard the ship."

It's not the first time a Carnival cruise ship has become stranded, leading to appalling conditions. This notable example from 2010 saw travellers describe their ordeal as "like Gilligan's Island" after 4446 passengers  - including 24 Australians – were stranded after a fire broke out in the Splendor's engine room, leaving it adrift off the coast of Mexico.

"The whole bottom deck smells like rotten food, rotten milk, just like faeces," a passenger said. "Everywhere it's just disgusting."

Carnival has cancelled Triumph's next two voyages, scheduled to depart on Monday and Saturday.

Aussie diplomat knew about Prisoner X

Australian Ben Zygier has been identified by the ABC as Israel's 'Prisoner X' who was found hanged in his cell in 2010. Vision: ABC Foreign Correspondent

Australian Ben Zygier has been identified as Israel's 'Prisoner X' who was found hanged in his cell in 2010.

AN Australian diplomat had been told of the jailing of Melbourne man Ben Zygier in Tel Aviv but had not passed it on, it was revealed today.

An inquiry has now been ordered into how Australian diplomats handled the imprisonment of Mr Zygier - the so-called Prisoner X - in Israel.

Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr ordered the review after learning today an Australian diplomat in Tel Aviv had been told by Israeli authorities of Mr Zygier's jailing in 2010.

However, he had not passed the information on through the appropriate channels.

Mr Zygier was found dead in his high-security cell in late 2010.

The Foreign Minister had earlier today said consul officials were not aware of the man's circumstances until his parents asked for help in bringing his body back to Australia.

The new information - that Israel had been open about his jailing to foreign diplomats - could make it harder to speculate that Mr Zygier was a Mossad intelligence agent.

It is believed the government was not told of the case until his family contacted DFAT to help bring his body back to Australia in December 2010 after he had been in jail for several months.

Mr Zygier, who moved to Israel from Melbourne in 2000, committed suicide in a high-security Israeli jail in 2010 after being held for months in great secrecy, the ABC reported on Tuesday.

The unsourced ABC story said that it "understood" the 34-year-old from Melbourne had been previously recruited by the Israeli spy agency Mossad.

Australian authorities are baffled by the case but  one official familiar with the basic details said, "There could be a James Bond-style story in there."

There was no official comment on the story in Israel.

But within hours of the report surfacing, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office summoned Israeli editors to ask them not to publish a story 'that is very embarrassing to a certain government agency', Israel's Haaretz newspaper said.

"The emergency meeting was called following a broadcast outside Israel regarding the incident in question," Haaretz said, giving no further information.

What's known is that in 2009 Israeli authorities jailed a man who was never identified publicly - but has become known as Prisoner X - in a top security prison, where he hanged himself in late 2010.

In the same period a former Melbourne man, 34-year-old Ben Zygier, committed suicide in a Tel Aviv jail, leaving behind an Israeli family including two children, and the allegation he was an agent for Mossad, the Israeli secret service.

Australian Government sources today said it was not known whether the two deaths were a coincidence, or that Mr Zygier was Prisoner X.

Mr Zygier, who used at least two other names, is reported to have been a regular traveller through the Middle East, which someone carrying only an Israeli passport would have great difficulty doing.

He arrived in Israel in 2000 and effectively disappeared from the radar of Australian authorities until his death.

Earlier a spokesman for Foreign Minister Bob Carr today told news.com.au the minister could not comment on matters which might be linked to intelligence issues.

However, the Foreign Minister is concerned that Israeli authorities did not notify Australian consular officials that a national was in jailed, or had died while in prison.

It is expected that a well-run nation such as Israel would automatically pass on that type of information.

The first the Australian embassy knew of Mr Zygier was when his parents contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs asking for help in repatriating his body in December, 2010.

Senator Carr is unlikely to demand further details from Israel unless Mr Zygier's parents and family demand an official explanation, and that has not happened.

The Zygier family, prominent in Melbourne's Jewish community, declined to co-operate with the ABC's Foreign Correspondent program which last night revealed the strange history of Prisoner X.

Senator Carr has said he is troubled by the allegations.

"It's never been raised with me. I'm not reluctant to seek an explanation from the Israeli government about what happened to Mr Allen and about what their view of it is," he told the program.

"The difficulty is I'm advised we've had no contact with his family [and] there's been no request for consular assistance during the period it's alleged he was in prison."

Two Israeli MPs on Tuesday questioned the justice minister over reports about the mysterious 2010 death of  the man dubbed "Prisoner X"  whose identity was kept top secret.

"This prisoner was detained under a name which was not his own. Do you know about this?" Arab Israeli MP Ahmed Tibi asked during an open question session in the Knesset, or parliament.

"Can you confirm that this Australian committed suicide in prison under a false name so it wouldn't be revealed he was being detained in Israel?" he asked outgoing Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman.

Similar questions were raised by the head of the leftwing Meretz party, Zehava Gal-On who asked Neeman if he considered it "normal that the prime minister's office should summon all the main media to avoid the publication of any information likely to embarrass Israel."

Until now, a complete media blackout has been imposed on the shadowy incident, with the Israeli press prevented from reporting the incident due to a strict gag order.

In response to the parliamentary questions, Neeman said he was not able to answer "because the justice ministry is not responsible for prisons".

"But there is no doubt that if true, the matter must be looked into," he added.

The story of Prisoner X first emerged in May 2010 when Israel's Ynet news website ran a story entitled "Who are you, Mr X?" in which it spoke about a prisoner being held in top secret conditions whose identity and crime was not even known to his jailers.

But the story was quickly taken offline due to a gag order.

The ABC report said the case of Prisoner X had come to be regarded as one of the most sensitive secrets of Israel's intelligence community with a tight gag order imposed on all details of the case.

Zygier had been living in Israel for about 10 years prior to his arrest in early 2010 and was married with two children, according to the channel, which said he had been recruited by Mossad.

It was not clear why he was arrested in "early 2010" but he was taken to Ayalon Prison in Ramle near Tel Aviv and held in the same cell used for the man who shot dead former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995.

There he was held in virtual isolation until his "apparent suicide" in December that year, the channel said.

After the Ynet article was published, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel wrote to complain to Israel's attorney general saying: "It's alarming that there's a prisoner being held incommunicado and we know nothing about him."

In response, the attorney general's office wrote back saying: "The current gag order is vital for preventing a serious breach of the state's security, so we cannot elaborate about this affair."

The ABC report said Zygier's body was found hanged despite "state-of-the-art surveillance systems," adding to the mystery surrounding the affair.

His body was flown to Melbourne where it was buried in a Jewish cemetery on December 22, 2010.

Zygier's relatives and friends declined to comment to ABC.

He was reported to be the son of Geoffrey Zygier, the executive director of the Victoria Jewish Community Council and one of the leaders of the Melbourne Jewish Community.

Ben Zygier was married to an Israeli woman and had two young children. He had reportedly spent a number of months in the Prisoner X cell before he was found hanged. Exactly what he did to end up in prison remains unclear.

The report said that the man attended Jewish schools in Melbourne's south east before studying law. His parents refused to be involved in the investigation.

It said that Zygier's imprisonment was so secret that not even his guards knew his name. However, word got out at the time of a mysterious prisoner and human rights groups wrote to the state to demand more information.

Magazine publishes Kate bikini pics

This is how the last lot of revealing pics of Kate Middleton were reported

ROYAL officials reacted with "disappointment" after a magazine published paparazzi shots of a pregnant Duchess of Cambridge.

UPDATE: Australia's Woman's Day have confirmed they will also publish pregnant Kate photos

The Italian gossip magazine Chi has published the photographs, splashing images of Catherine in a bright blue bikini and sporting a clear baby bump on the cover.

St. James's Palace slammed the photos as a "clear breach of the couple's right to privacy."

"We are disappointed that photographs of the Duke and Duchess on a private holiday look likely to be published overseas", a spokesman said.

Italy's Chi magazine has published pictures of the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge on holiday in the Caribbean, sparking outrage. We have blacked out the image.

The photos show the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge - the former Kate Middleton - wearing a bikini and strolling on a beach with William on the island of Caribbean island of Mustique.

Last year, William and Catherine went to court over a French gossip magazine's publication of topless photos of the duchess while the couple was on holiday in the south of France.

The new photos are said to show a pregnant Kate Middleton walking in the water with Prince William on the beach island of Mustique.

According to the Sunday People, the photos, which they claimed they decided not to view, also show Kate's sister Pippa in a bikini.

While British media will not publish the controversial pictures, it is believed they could spark a bidding war in other parts of the world to purchase them.

The reports of new photos come after the scandal surrounding the publication of paparazzi shots last September which showed the 31-year-old sunbathing topless in the south of France.

The royal couple flew into the exclusive Caribbean island of Mustique last week and are reportedly staying in a villa that costs £19,000 ($29,000) a week to rent.

The holiday, which is being described as a "babymoon", is a family affair, with Catherine's family, including her parents Carole and Michael Middleton, said to be staying in a nearby villa.

Remains found in fugitive's cabin

No body found yet says LAPD's Cmdr Andrew Smith at press conference. Police still on high alert. KTTV LA

AS police scoured mountain peaks for days, using everything from bloodhounds to high-tech helicopters, the revenge-seeking ex-LAPD officer they wanted was hiding among them, holed up in a vacation cabin across the street from their command post.

It was there that Christopher Dorner apparently took refuge last Thursday, four days after beginning a deadly rampage that would claim four lives.

The search ended abruptly on Tuesday when a man believed to be Dorner bolted from hiding, stole two cars, barricaded himself in a vacant cabin and mounted a last stand in a furious shootout in which he killed one sheriff's deputy and wounded another before the tear gas-filled building erupted in flames. He never emerged from the ruins and hours later a charred body was found inside.

An official briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press that a wallet with a California driver's licence with the name Christopher Dorner has been found in the rubble of the cabin.

"We have reason to believe that it is him,'' San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Cynthia Bachman said.

Dorner, 33, had said in lengthy rant police believe he posted on Facebook that he expected to die in one final, violent confrontation with police, and if it was him in the cabin that's just what happened.

The apparent end came very close to where his trail went cold six days earlier when his burning pickup truck - with guns and camping gear inside - was abandoned with a broken axle on a fire road in the San Bernardino National Forest near the ski resort town of Big Bear Lake.

His footprints led away from the truck and vanished on frozen soil.

With no sign of him and few leads, police offered a $US1 million ($974,000) reward to bring him to justice and end a "reign of terror'' that had more than 50 families of targeted Los Angeles police officers under round-the-clock protection after he threatened to bring "warfare'' to the LAPD, officers and their families.

Just a few hours after police announced on Tuesday that they had fielded more than 1000 tips with no sign of Dorner, word came that a man matching his description had tied up two people in a Big Bear Lake cabin, stole their car and fled.

Game wardens from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife who were part of the search detail spotted the purple Nissan that had been reported stolen going in the opposite direction and gave chase, department spokesman Lt. Patrick Foy said. The driver looked like Dorner.

They lost the purple car after it passed a school bus and turned onto a side road, but two other Fish and Wildlife patrols turned up that road a short time later, and were searching for the car when a white pickup truck sped erratically toward the wardens.

"He took a close look at the driver and realized it was the suspect,'' Lt Foy said.

Dorner, who allegedly stole the pickup truck at gunpoint after crashing the first car, rolled down a window and opened fire on the wardens, striking a warden's truck more than a dozen times.

One of the wardens shot at the suspect as he rounded a curve in the road. It's unclear if he hit him, but the stolen pickup careened off the road and crashed in a snow bank. Dorner then ran on foot to the cabin where he barricaded himself and got in a shootout with San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies and other officers who arrived.

Two deputies were shot, one fatally.

A SWAT team surrounded the cabin and used an armoured vehicle to break out the cabin windows, said a law enforcement official who requested anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. The officers then pumped a gas into the cabin and blasted a message over a loudspeaker: "Surrender or come out.''

The armoured vehicle then tore down each of the cabin's four walls.

A single shot was heard inside before the cabin was engulfed in flames, the law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

Until Tuesday, authorities weren't sure Dorner was still in Big Bear Lake, where his pickup truck was found within walking distance from the cabin where he hid.

Even door-to-door searches failed to turn up any trace of him in the quiet, bucolic neighborhood where children were playing in the snow Tuesday night.

Former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Jordan Dorner is suspected in the killings of Monica Quan and her fiance, Keith Lawrence.

With many searchers leaving town amid speculation he was long gone, the command center across the street was taken down Monday.

Ron Erickson, whose house is only about quarter mile away, said officers interrogated him to make sure he wasn't being held hostage. Mr Erickson himself had been keeping a nervous watch on his neighbourhood, but he never saw the hulking Dorner.

"I looked at all the cabins that backed the national forest and I just didn't think to look at the one across from the command post,'' he said. "It didn't cross my mind. It just didn't.''

Police say Dorner began his run on Feb. 6 after they connected the slayings of a former police captain's daughter and her fiance with his angry manifesto.

Dorner blamed LAPD Capt. Randal Quan for providing poor representation before the police disciplinary board that fired him for filing a false report.

Dorner, who is black, claimed in his online rant that he was the subject of racism by the department and was targeted for doing the right thing.

Chief Charlie Beck, who initially dismissed Dorner's allegations, said he would reopen the investigation into his firing - not to appease the ex-officer, but to restore confidence in the black community, which had a long fractured relationship with police that has improved in recent years.

Dorner vowed to get even with those who had wronged him as part of his plan to reclaim his good name.

"You're going to see what a whistleblower can do when you take everything from him especially his NAME!!!'' the rant said. "You have awoken a sleeping giant.''

Within hours of being named as a suspect in the killings, the man described as armed and "extremely dangerous,'' tried unsuccessfully to steal a boat in San Diego to flee to Mexico.

After leaving a trail of evidence, he headed north where he opened fire on two patrol cars in Riverside County, shooting three police officers and killing one.

With a description of his car broadcast all over the Southwest and Mexico, he managed to get to the mountains 130 kilometres east of Los Angeles, where his burning truck was found with a broken axle.

Los Angeles police are opening an inquiry into the 2008 dismissal of Christopher Dorner as a manhunt for the suspected killer continues in California. Lindsey Parietti reports.

Only a short distance from the truck, he spent his final days with a front-row seat to the search mobilised right outside his doorstep.

Defiant MP fronts packed courtroom

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 06 Februari 2013 | 23.26

Craig Thomson has been granted bail and will re-appear in court on May 22.

A DEFIANT Craig Thomson is facing damaging criminal charges that he misused $42,800, allegedly using union credit cards to pay for prostitutes, R-rated movies and ATM cash withdrawals.

As the Gillard Government continues to reel from the scandal, Victoria Police outlined 154 fraud offences against Mr Thomson including allegations he spent more than $5000 on escort services while he was Health Services Union boss between 2002 and 2007.

During a packed court appearance in Melbourne, the MP was warned against contacting sex workers at a number of brothels including Boardroom Escorts, Tiffany's Girls and Young Blondes.

Fraud squad detectives, who have spent 18 months pursuing the embattled MP, outlined a number of damaging allegations including that he "dishonestly" used HSU funds to pay for cigarettes, air travel, food and even "firewood".

The charge sheets allege the now cross-bench MP lived the high life as a union boss, staying at the Hilton, Hyatt and other upmarket hotels, and purchasing in-house "pornographic" movies on 21 separate occasions.

Alongside his wife, Zoe, and with his lawyer close by, the embattled MP slammed the police investigation as he left the Melbourne Magistrates' Court to a waiting media scrum he likened to an AFL Grand Final.

"What was disappointing about today was it became clear that not only was last Thursday wrongly done by the police, but after 18 months in relation to investigating this matter they still don't even have witnesses that they are able to produce for us in terms of some of these issues that are here," he told reporters.

Police have alleged that Mr Thomson made seven separate payments for escort services between 2003 and 2007, including $2475.00 to Keywed, which trades as Sydney Outcalls, $660 to A Touch of Class and $770 to Boardroom Escorts.

He is also alleged to have stolen $3750 through a series of ATM withdrawals using his union credit cards.

Prosecutors said Mr Thomson was now facing 154 charges, five more than the 149 he faced after his NSW arrest last week.

A brief of evidence, expected to comprise 20 volumes, was expected to be served on Mr Thomson's legal team by April 17, the court heard.

Mr Thomson's lawyer applied to have a bail condition, that ordered Mr Thomson not to contact certain witnesses, be removed. He said because prosecutors were unable to provide Mr Thomson with a list of witnesses it was an unfair condition that was a "recipe for trouble".

But Magistrate Donna Bakos refused the application because the condition placed no undue onus on Mr Thomson.

Instead, she varied the condition, ordering he not knowingly contact witnesses.

Mr Thomson did not say anything throughout the 15-minute hearing until asked whether he understood the revised conditions.
