Teen ‘too fat for Instagram’

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 16 Juli 2014 | 23.26

Too fat? .... Samm Newman had her account deleted from Instagram after she posted this picture. Source: Supplied

SAMM Newman, 19, was shocked to discover this image that she uploaded to Instagram was deleted. Hours later her account was deactivated.

The student is a US size 24, an Australian size 28, says she grew up being bullied at high school for her weight but that he self esteem improved once she started attending Ohio University and found an online community of people who built up her confidence.

She said Instagram was her "safe place" where she felt comfortable posting body images.

But now she has slammed the social media platform for removing "anyone who doesn't fit their idea of normal."

"I didn't find [the briefs] or the bra at all inappropriate," Ms Newman told NBC4 News. "They covered me entirely and I've seen pictures like that all over Instagram."

She makes a good point. It can be hard to log on to Instagram without being hit by sexualised images like this.

Or this.

Or even this.

Instagram has been forced to apologise for what it claims was an error and has restored Ms Newman's account.

"When our team processes reports from other members of the Instagram community, we occasionally make a mistake. In this case, we wrongly removed content and worked to rectify the error as soon as we were notified. We apologise for any inconvenience," the company said in a statement.

Ms Newman said people have applauded her sticking up for herself and larger people. She had this final word on the matter.

"Fat is not a bad word," she said. "How confident can you be if you keep censoring yourself because people don't want to look at you?"

Porte suddenly our big Tour hope

Australia's Richie Porte is a genuine chance of taking out the Tour de France. Source: AFP

RICHIE Porte has long been seen as Cadel Evans' heir apparent when it comes to Australia's next great Tour de France hope.

But no one, probably not even the man himself, expected the baton to be passed so quickly.

However it just so happens that the first Tour de France Evans has missed in 10 years coincides with Porte having to step up after his leader at Team Sky and defending champion Chris Froome crashed out.

The most dramatic first week of a Tour de France in memory claimed the scalp of some of the peloton's biggest names including Froome, Mark Cavendish, Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck all before the first rest day.

And as soon as Froome abandoned by getting into the team car battered and bruised after three crashes in two days, Porte became the man.

If Sky is to claim three consecutive yellow jerseys then it's suddenly up to a 29-year-old former Launceston pool lifeguard who came to cycling from triathlon when he was 21.

It wasn't so long ago (2009) Porte was still slugging it out on the continental scene with Tasmanian team Praties — now known as Avanti which races the National Road Series.

His first coach and owner/manager of the team Andrew Christie-Johnson remembers Porte starting out in cycling in 2006.

"He was a C-Grader in Tasmania riding handicaps so he's come a long way," said Christie-Johnson, who gets a text message from Porte after every stage of this year's Tour.

"I saw a steady progression but 2008 was the turning point and that's when we could see something special in Richie.

"He was fifth overall at the Herald Sun Tour and fourth place that year was Chris Froome riding for Barloworld but Chris had been riding a fair bit longer than him at that stage.

"He's a great guy, he appreciates help and when he comes back (to Tasmania) he comes on our training camps and tests our guys.

"Every single night of the Tour so far he's texted me so he's a good mate of mine.

"But the same way, if you do something bad by him he doesn't forget either."

When the Tour de France resumed last night after Tuesday's rest day with Stage 11 near the Swiss border, Porte was second overall, 2mins 23 secs behind Italian race leader Vincenzo Nibali.

Nibali is also 29 but has already won the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana. Contador might have gone home in a significant boost for Porte's yellow jersey chances, but Nibali is no mug.

Neither is Bauke Mollema (6th last year), Tejay van Garderen (5th in 2012) or Jurgen Van den Broeck (4th in 2012).

There is pressure on Porte as the new 'leader' of the biggest cycling team in the biggest bike race in the world.

But he finds himself in a win-win situation.

If he gives it everything he's got and becomes just the second Australian to win the Tour de France, then he'll become a legend.

But if he gives it everything he's got and falls short then he's no worse off, except perhaps for going home wondering if a golden opportunity had just gone begging.

But Sky is already down to seven men after losing Froome and Spanish all-rounder Xabi Zandio who also crashed out, so it's going to take a massive ask from here.

But Porte is a fighter and showed last year when he lights it up on the long, gradual climbs, besides Froome there's not too many others who can go the journey with him.

One of the big questions lingering over Porte is just how race fit is he, given illness forced him to miss the Giro d'Italia and then fail to finish Tirreno-Adriatico and Tour of Romandie this year.

But he hit back hard in the Criterium du Dauphine and the week before the Tour told News Corp he was "right where I need to be" and in fact felt fresher than ever.

Certainly in the first 10 days of this year's race he's shown he's up for the challenge.

A lot could happen in the Alps, but the penultimate stage of this year's race is a 54km time trial which could well decide the Tour.

Coincidentally, the penultimate stage of the 2012 Tour was a 53.5km time trial and was also the last time Porte and Nibali raced the Tour together.

That day, Porte put 1min 13 secs into his Italian rival but that was two years ago and this year's time trial is on completely different terrain.

Last weekend, SBS aired an interview, presumably shot long before the Tour even started, in which Porte said if he just podiumed in a Grand Tour in his career then he could retire to Tasmania a happy man.

But now Porte is suddenly in with a shot at not only standing on the podium but winning the Tour altogether whether he is ready for it or not.

For all the success of Orica-GreenEDGE and Simon Gerrans' incredible performances in the Classics, there is nothing like an Aussie contender for the yellow jersey to capture the imagination of the wider Australian sporting public.

Porte has accepted that responsibility with open arms and an entire nation of bleary-eyed cycling fans are behind him, willing him all the way to Paris.

What is in ‘DLA Piper Volume Two’?

Top secret ... today's release of DLA Piper Volume Two will be taking place under the tightest security protocols. Source: Supplied

Calls are mounting for a royal commission into the military's handling of abuse claims raised by cadets.

HUNDREDS of new and alarmingly sordid cases of alleged defence force abuse will today be presented to a Senate Committee.

The senators will be asked to privately examine 33 folders detailing more than 900 top-secret complaints, as part of an inquiry into the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce (DART).

Most cases have not been dealt with yet and they are contained in a classified file called "DLA Piper Volume Two".

It is understood that the files include the names of very senior military officers.

The material has not been seen by the Minister or anyone in Defence, but is so explosive DLA Piper lawyer Gary Rumble — who conducted the massive defence abuse inquiry — believes it warrants a Royal Commission.

The in-camera viewing is designed to provide transparency and to remove any mystery about the extent or the nature of complaints of abuse made to DLA Piper and the DART.

The files contain "detailed, highly sensitive, personal information and specific recommendations dealing with individual complaints of abuse', according to acting DART chairman Robert Cornall, who notified the Foreign Affairs and Trade References Committee chairman Labor Senator Alex Gallacher on Tuesday about the thousands of pages of material.

The folders will only be available to committee members and possibly other Senators and their staff under strict conditions for just a single day in a secure room at Parliament House.

Taskforce staff will be on hand to assist Senators and to ensure that the strict rules are not broken. Any leak would be a serious breach of privilege and subject to severe sanctions including jail time.

The Senators will not be allowed to copy, photograph or take any notes.

Defence Minister David Johnston, who is committed to overhauling the archaic military justice system, approved today's controlled viewing.

It is understood that he will delay the government's response to all the reports and hard-hitting reforms of military justice until after the Senate Committee report is tabled in late August.

The DLA Piper Review into allegations of sexual abuse was established in the wake of the so-called 'Skype sex scandal' at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in 2011.

The scandal erupted when a female cadet went public with revelations that she had been secretly filmed and observed having sex with a male cadet.

The Defence Abuse Response Taskforce was established as part of the Government's response to the DLA Piper Review to assess abuse cases prior to 2011.

Assange may be a free man today

Rape charges ... WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been in the Ecuadorean embassy for two years now. Source: AFP

JULIAN Assange could be a free man today as he waits to hear if Swedish authorities lift the arrest warrant he faces over rape charges.

The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London since June 18, 2012 at a cost of millions of dollars.

A Swedish court is holding a public hearing on Wednesday on whether to lift his arrest warrant after a legal challenge, the Guardian reported.

Supporters have gathered outside.

Assange has said he would stay in the embassy even if the rape charges are dropped because he fears he is a US government target and that they will extradite him.

"The strong view of my US lawyer is that there is already a sealed indictment which means I would be arrested, unless the British Government gave information or guarantees that would grant me safe passage," he said. "So if the Swedish Government drops their request (to go to Sweden), I still cannot leave the embassy."

WikiLeaks hinted that the pair are more than workout buddies however and said they are discussing a "future collaboration" that will be revealed "in due course."

Loom band fashion's in right now

Loom dress ... This dress fetched 170,000 pounds once it was put on eBay. Source: Supplied

HELEN Smith put this dress on eBay made up of 24,000 loom bands. She expected to make about $90 profit on it. She couldn't quite believe how much it sold for.

Ms Smith's close friend Katherine Burnand spent 45 hours making the dress.

When the online auction finished yesterday a total of 137 people had bid on it with the winning bidder set to pay 170,000 pounds ($310,000) for it, plus 7 pounds postage and handling, for good measure.

Ms Smith, of Prestatyn, North Wales, put the dress online on July 8 for 50 pounds.

Ms Burnand spent three weeks on the venture, spending 45 pounds for 600 bands.

She said the money would be life changing for her and her family.

"We're not a rich family. I'm not complaining with what I have at all, but this could be a

great change in fortunes for us. These things never happen to people like us," she told Metro . "Five years ago my husband died and I lost my house and my business so I just want to enjoy it with my family and friends because life is too short and I know that from first hand."

"I think me and Helen are of the same ilk that until the money has registered in the bank we will be keeping our feet on the floor," she said. "If the money does come through I'll buy a car for my husband Conrad and help my two daughters financially."

Same idea ... Us comedian Jimmy Kimmel went for a 'loom jacket' instead. Source: Supplied

Ms Smith says the pair will split the money 50-50 and that the women will take off on a little holiday once the money comes through.

"It's just going to be nice to that I have a bit of security for once and that I can pay the rent this week," she said. "I've had 866 messages which I'm plodding through slowly because I want to reply to all of them even if it's just a thank you to let them know I've read the message.

"I'm going to buy my son Peter a car and driving lessons and I'll stick some money to one side for my daughter until she's 18," she said.

Ms Burnard however does have a confession for the buyer.

"It's not actually very nice to wear because it's very heavy," she said. "All the plastic bands make it quite uncomfortable to wear too.

"My daughter tried it on. She's found it quite a struggle to get on because it's a small dress."

KKK recruiting with bags of lollies

Recruiting ... this flyer was dropped off in a bag of candy in a driveway in South Carolina. Source: Supplied

SOME residents in north-western South Carolina say they found bags of candy on their street containing a piece of paper asking them to join the Ku Klux Klan.

Residents in an Oconee County subdivision found the on bags Saturday night or Sunday morning.

The paper said "Save Our Land, Join the Klan." It had a phone number that led to an automated message discussing KKK efforts against illegal immigration.

Robert Jones told WHNS-TV that he's the imperial klaliff of the Loyal White Knights and said the effort was part of a recruiting event they hold three times a year. Jones said the telephone number gets about 20,000 calls a day.

Oconee County resident Bo Morris said he thought it was "unacceptable" to see the bags and flyers in his neighbourhood.

Littlefinger’s grasp reaches beyond GoT

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 02 Juli 2014 | 23.27

Take a look at the brand new mystery-drama starring Brendan Gleeson, Chris O'Dowd and Kelly Reilly; 'Calvary'.

SOME may argue that Aidan Gillen has a magic touch when it comes to TV projects.

The Irish actor has been a part of not only three hit series, but three groundbreaking ones, shows that have pushed the boundaries of what TV can be.

What to watch: All the latest movie reviews from Leigh Paatsch

In 1999, he played a gay man in UK series Queer as Folk, a show that didn't shy away from sex and homophobia. Five years later he stepped into HBO's The Wire as an ambitious Baltimore politician. The crime drama was hugely influential, ushering in the age of box-set viewing.

Then came Game of Thrones. Gillen's Littlefinger — brothel owner and arch manipulator — is, four seasons in, one of the few originals alive and scheming.

It's certainly been a great run for the 46-year-old. But magic touch? Don't be silly.

"I can read a script to know whether it's good, then I'll do what I can to go after it," he says.

"I've managed to nail a few of those along the way, but there are other things I would have liked to have gotten that I didn't.

"Overall, I'd say my hit rate has been OK. But it's not my golden touch — I didn't write it, I didn't direct it."

In between groundbreaking TV series, Gillen has worked steadily in theatre and in mostly indie film projects (with the odd scene in The Dark Knight Rises thrown in to impress his kids).

"If I'm in a series that has that level of visibility, I'll use that to generally go in the other direction and try to do a lot of small-scale stuff," he says.

"It often is with friends or past collaborators. I am happy on a massive movie set, but I'm equally as happy on a tiny, no-budget set — feeding myself and cycling to work."

One of the small films Gillen veered into is Calvary. The black comedy is the second in a trilogy from writer/director John Michael McDonagh and leading man Brendan Gleeson.

Their first film, 2011's The Guard, is the biggest local movie in Irish box office history.

Gillen has known McDonagh for a long time: "I acted in John's first short film 14 years ago," he says.

Like every other actor in that short, Gillen was offered a part in The Guard, but couldn't do it.

Gillen, right, couldn't pass up he chance to work with Brendan Gleeson, left, in Calvary. Source: Supplied

Still, McDonagh called again with Calvary: "John's very loyal. Often people say, 'Do the short and when the feature comes, you'll get the call'. But it doesn't always happen that way."

Gillen also wasn't about to knock back working with Gleeson a second time.

"Everyone wants to work with Brendan; I put myself in that group. It was really nice to work with him after standing on the sidelines watching for 20 years. It's one of his best performances, to be sure."

The film casts Gleeson as a small town priest who is told in confessional he will be killed next Sunday. Given a week to get his affairs in order, the Father bounces between the oddball residents in his town — one of whom will do him in.

Gillen's role as Littlefinger in Game of Thrones impacted the way he looked for Calvary. Source: Supplied

Gillen plays a doctor with a blackly cynical streak.

"He's miserable, surrounded by death and decay. He's self-medicating as well," says Gillen. "A bit of inspiration I took for the doctor: I saw a guy once, sitting in a bar, reading the deaths column of the paper and just giggling away to himself."

If Gillen has one regret about Calvary, it's his facial hair.

"I was in the middle of Game of Thrones so there was a look I couldn't shed — I could have done without the Petyr Baelish moustache. The HBO people are very accommodating, but you've got to be on first call for them, which means having a bit of facial hair."

Season five of Game of Thrones begins shooting later this month, taking Gillen from Dublin up to Northern Ireland.

He has read the books the series is based on, so has had a fair idea where Littlefinger is headed. But in season five, the show will storm past the books.

"It's an adventure everyone is on — the audience, the cast. Not knowing where it's going, that's good," he says. "People playing end games could work … but if you don't know what the end game is, maybe you won't play the obvious thing."
